Earth Hour: Savior of the planet or just another do-gooder eco fail?

Apparently Cynical Sally rolled out of bed this morning because my first impulse when I saw this year's Earth Hour announced: roll my eyes. But why?? It's such a great initiative!!
Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007 when 2.2 million people switched off the lights in their homes, offices and businesses for 60 minutes to make a point about electricity consumption and carbon pollution.

Millions of people from Sydney to Sweden are set to switch off their lights on March 27, as part of the global 'Earth Hour' campaign to highlight climate change, organisers said Sunday.

Some 250 cities around the world have already signed up for the symbolic, energy saving exercise which in 2009 saw landmarks such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge and New York's Empire State Building plunged into darkness.

"The event will be held at 8:30 pm Saturday 27 March in cities and towns all over the world," conservation group WWF-Australia's Chief Executive Officer Greg Bourne said.
I dig it. Create a large event to spread mass awareness about energy saving.

Last year I invited a bunch of people to my house so we could honor the event. We climbed up on a local hill so we could watch all the lights go out. Instead, we just noticed all of that lights that were left on, and even though we did the mega count down: from our perch, we didn't notice any lights or monuments going dark in San Francisco (I'm sure they did, it was just a very sad moment when there was nothing to...witness.)

But do these events do anything? Shift anything? Change behaviors? Are the little or big drops in the ocean of change? Sure, I unplug my power strip and wander 'round the house turning out lights. Or are they silly activities that we gather around to make us feel good about ourselves and give us the illusion that we are doing something (anything for God's sake) for just a few hours a year?

Or is the REAL question here more about what happens to people when they get excited to see change, but then don't. How do we keep the fires burning, and not let Cynical Sally take the wheel?

Inquiring minds want to know.

It's Earth Day! It must be time to launch something!

Dear world,

It's Earth Day: which means that if you are a green business, organization, activist, blogger, or consumer, than it must be time to launch something. It's sort of built into your DNA. You hear EARTH DAY, and you think: JOIN THE MASSES AND TRY TO GET EVERYONE'S ATTENTION TO MY GREEN PRODUCT when all any green minded person wants to do is put their toes in the sand and look at the sea, or lay on their back at look at clouds and contemplate their relationship to planet earth.

Ahh well: here goes: a list of some cool initiatives launching today:
Green Peace has set a goal of mobilizing 3 million people to join the fight for the climate, to force governments to act against runaway climate change.
To-go ware lunched their new bamboo utencil set. Never throw away another plastic utensil ever again, clip it to your purse and have a conversation starter, and look good while you reduce your impact on the planet. Not a bad deal (but go fast: because the masses will be gathering after they are featured on Oprah later today).
TheFind and GoodGuide are partnering to help shoppers find green products: Over 1 million green products from organic and environmentally-friendly brands and stores can be found on TheFind.com using its new green shopping search.
