"Idealism is fine, but as it approaches reality, the costs become prohibitive." William F. Buckley Jr.
This statement is tragically flawed in two very important senses.
1. The cost prohibitive factor is the free-rider quotient, assumed to be a value less than 1. This quotient can be 1, if all men, women and children on Earth follow the Golden Rule.
2. The fact that Mr. Buckley refers to costs at all illuminates the fact that his insight is limited to the physical World.
Lets change our perspective.

She comes from Little Rock--born in Texas, she has astronaut parents--in many respects Kristin Fisher is an all american--straight shootin' type o' girl. So bringing her Texas justice to the New Hampshire primary, all she was looking for was a straight answer to her question of the role of the National Guard--its her issue. You may be surprised--she actually got what she came for...She comes from Little Rock--born in Texas, she has astronaut parents--in many respects... more

Paper ballots are the only answer to the questions. Our votes have been outsourced! We need to take back our elections and demand paper ballots. No Company should have propriety rights to keep our votes secret. Open government demands open unquestionable vote counts. Questions should not go unanswered! It?s only a conspiracy theory if questions go unanswered! Paper ballots are the only answer to the questions. Our votes have been outsourced!... more

OOOps, 'Nothing to see here, move along!' Will we? VotersUnite.org's John Gideon calls our attention to this snippet, from this recent story at NH's SeaCoastOnline [emphasis ours]:
So many Democrats turned out in Stratham that Town Clerk Shirley Daley said she had to photocopy 87 ballots. Hartson said she began printing extra Democratic ballots at 6 p.m. when they began running low. Because of a glitch in the machines, clerks there had to hand count all of the extra ballots.
Gideon follows up by asking: "They had to hand-count all of the extra ballots. What about the ballots that had already been run on the machines (note the plural)? How many other machines across the state had the same 'glitch'?"
We tried to contact Town Clerk Daley on Friday, in order to find out, what came of the ballots counted before the problem was discovered, but their offices close at 12noon on Fridays.
As to further such incidents across the state, it seems there were far more than anyone has so far reported. We will have another article shortly, concerning such reports of problems on Diebold voting machine across the state during last week's Primary Election. 80% of New Hampshire votes were counted on such machines. To date, none of those ballots have been counted, verified or audited by any human being to our knowledge.

No, there weren't any conspiracies. No racism involved. The reason why it seemed everyone got New Hampshire's results wrong was simple. They overlooked the number of voters who were still undecided or could still change their minds.

Kucinich and some obscure Republican candidate have both asked for a recount of the New Hampshire primary results.
Not only does this bring back those acidic memories of the Florida debacle in 2000, it raises a huge issue in the 2008 campaign: computerized voter fraud. How can we trust that our votes will be recorded accurately by these machines that are known for crashing, malfunctioning and being hacked with ease?
great article on the subject:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/06/magazine/06Vote-t.html?_r=1&ref=magazine&oref=login
I'd say paper ballots are the way to go, but I don't if I'll be able to take it if I hear the phrase "hanging chad" ever again.
What about permanent absentee voting?
How should we vote to make sure our votes count and are accurate?
How are you going to vote? And do you trust that your vote will count?Kucinich and some obscure Republican candidate have both asked for a recount of the... more

As Hillary Clinton finished her economic address and prepared to take questions, at a campaign event in Los Angeles, a man yelled at her, "Hillary, marry me, baby."
The crowd laughed, Hillary looked shocked and said, "That is certainly the kindest offer I've had in a while." Then added immediately, "I'd probably be arrested."
That is a new one, usually only popstars and hotties get that proposal. Maybe Hillary has reached hottie status?
