Ben Harper has built one of the largest and most loyal followings in the world.
We get Embedded for a day in Ben's life as he introduces us to Relentless7, his new band, and takes us inside his family's music store to school us on his roots.
Then Ben goes into producer mode in the studio with his Aussie protégé hand-picked by the late Heath Ledger, and shows us there's no detail too small to obsess over when overseeing a fashion line.
Plus, Death Cab For Cutie bassist Nick Harmer tweaks our world perspective with tilt-shift photography in this Tour Stop. And Fleet Foxes return to Current TV, sneaking into an abandoned wing of of the Grand Palais in Paris for an amazing acoustic performance of "Blue Ridge Mountains."
Current Music Presents: Embedded is a six part special that puts you on the ground and behind the scenes with unrivaled access to your favorite musicians. We've traveled the world, going beyond performances to bring you the most intimate and unfiltered moments in artists' lives. When others stop the cameras, we capture the real story of today's top musicians.

Chris Walla And J. Robbins Create 'Mercury'
October 12, 2009 - Not everyone can write and record a song in two days, but that's the Project Song challenge faced by Chris Walla (of Death Cab For Cutie) and J. Robbins (of Jawbox and Burning Airlines). What made this project especially difficult was that the two had never even met before they stepped into NPR's performance studio.
But it didn't take long for Robbins to pick up his bass guitar, for Walla to pick up a guitar, and for the two to begin their musical friendship.
I supplied some inspiration for their song: photo collages created by artist Tom Chambers. They chose a photograph of a house in a canyon filled with water, tilted and flooded. Not far from the house is a dog on a boat, floating either toward or away from the house. I also supplied a series of words. They selected the word "cerebral" and promised when they wrote the song not to be too cerebral about it.
Chris Walla and J. Robbins were joined by Robbins' friend, drummer Darren Zentec. The song they created, "Mercury," takes its subject matter from that photograph, which is a bit of a cataclysmic scenario turned into a song about the climate crisis.
And a great song it is. You can hear the music and watch a video documenting the creative process as it unfolds.Chris Walla And J. Robbins Create 'Mercury'

"Tim Robbins jokes that he could've given the title "While Rome Burns" to his new festival at the Actors’ Gang. Times are tough, people are angry, "and they have every right to be," says the Oscar-winning actor and artistic director of the Culver City-based theater company. "There've been really bad decisions made that we're paying the bill for now."
Like most cultural entities, the Gang, one of L.A.'s most accomplished theatrical institutions, has been scorched financially by the economic crisis. Earlier this summer, the ensemble's accountant even recommended that, to save money, the Gang should consider temporarily not producing theater and just focus on its extensive educational and community outreach programs.
Robbins' incredulous three-word response gave the new festival its name: "WTF?!" That scrappily emphatic statement of purpose expresses the outlook of the ambitious endeavor, which opens Tuesday and runs through Dec. 19.
"I'm not ignoring the economy," Robbins says. "We are flying in the face of it. We are saying, 'This is not going to stop us.' And so the best way we can figure out for it not to stop us is to do more than we ever have in the past."
Curated by Robbins, "WTF?!" will mix film screenings, live music, theater, poetry, dance performances and readings, among other activities. Several will be performed by members of the Gang, such as the double-bill performance "Sole Mates" and "Death and Giggles" by Daisuke Tsuji, who has toured as a clown with Cirque du Soleil.
Other events will bring in outside artists. Among the marquee names who'll lend their presence to the Gang's intimate 99-seat space at the Ivy Substation for the festival will be Jackson Browne, Tenacious D, John Doe of X, Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine and Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie.""Tim Robbins jokes that he could've given the title "While Rome Burns" to his new... more

The last time Ben Gibbard split off from the rest of Death Cab for Cutie to record an album's worth of songs, that album was the Postal Service's Give Up, and half a million sensitive indie types swooned. (Of note: That Postal Service album still absolutely rules, eff a backlash.)
Now he's done it again, this time with Jay Farrar, Son Volt frontman, former Uncle Tupelo member, and all-around alt-country standard-bearer.
Farrar and Gibbard originally got together in 2007 to record music for the forthcoming Jack Kerouac documentary One Fast Move or I'm Gone: Kerouac's Big Sur. (Both Gibbard and Farrar appear in the film, as do Tom Waits, Patti Smith, and many of Kerouac's contemporaries.) That collaboration blossomed into an entire full-length album, which has the same title as the movie. Gibbard and Farrar wrote and performed all the songs together, with lyrics taken from Kerouac's 1962 novel Big Sur.The last time Ben Gibbard split off from the rest of Death Cab for Cutie to record an... more

Music plays in the hearts and souls of all of us. This post is about expressing yourself musically while not judging others for their taste. Really funny piece because One of 365 discusses different musical genres in a humorous way. She also discusses different bands from Bonobo and Unkle to Death Cab for Cutie to The Sugababes, and different types of music cultures so there is something for every music lover. To sum it, "Hey You Indie Bastards, Stop Judging My Rihanna and I'll Stop Making Fun Of Your Skinny Jeans!"

I was nineish when i first heard plans in 2005. that started my basic musical philosophy meltdown. I was in the car with my aunt and dad one evening. My aunt has one of the most Kick ass music tastes of any one I know. She's burned Me tons of Cds over the years, most of which listen to alot. Any way, i went home and looked them up online (this was before youtube, which made it that much harder). i liked them, so i took my meager music budget to the local music shop (it's called hot poop. i'm not kidding.) and asked the guy there, (he never changes his appearance) about them. all he had was an ancient tape of You Can play these song With Chords (i live in washington, i can find tons of original tapes From most excelent bands if i want.) i thought about it for a sec, and then gave the guy 5 dollars, which barely dented my music fund. i took it home and started listening almost imeadiatly. oh, how i loved that tape, i wish i loved it more though , because i let my little cousin play with my walkman on a vacation in 2007. in his words, Thingy go poopoo. This practically broke my heart. yes, i had various other mixes of their songs, but it was my first that i had of theirs. any way, As i began to progress through middle school i began to notice things, (not those things,) about my thoughts about life, death, and various other aspects of things. I want to clear this up quick. I am not emo. i never intend to be emo, i never want to be emo, i'm to happy to be emo. my style is best described as lumberjack chic. but not grunge... anyway, I saw midway through middle school i cared more about things like the enviorment and world hunger alot more than the fitch bitches that went to school with me. i think i can attribute that to Death Cab's song, What sara Said from plans because it's a song about the fragility of life and how everyone eventually dies and you want to make a difference if you want to be remembered. I realized two weeks in that what shoes you wear do not make a difference in the long run. mabye for a couple days you might over hear something like "and did you see her shoes! She was wearing doc martins, with a dress. soooooo uncool." however, i've never let anything like this get to me.
That was a really long tangent. no wonder i was voted best tangent starter in g&t. well midway through listening to amputations i realized that there was an entire other side of music that i had only had glimpses of. the world was not just shitty disney artists that were being exploited for every last cent they could yeild before they gave way to drugs and paparazzi stalkers. and now some of my favorite bands include Posies, Green day, Plain White T's, The Calling, Mirade Fortress, and of course Death Cab For Cutie. that one moment in My dad's Crappy Focus (the fuel pump was disfunctional) shaped my Future mind set as well as my music tastes. I love them. they are that important to me.I was nineish when i first heard plans in 2005. that started my basic musical... more
