Join Current Music on New Year’s Eve for a marathon of all six parts of Embedded—plus three brand new special episodes where we follow road-weary musicians as they break free from life on tour.
You've seen our Tour Stops before—we staged a secret Tweet-up show with Amanda Palmer, partied on a boat with Passion Pit, shopped for thrift-store scores with Lykke Li and classic hip-hop records with K'Naan, and took miniature photos with Death Cab for Cutie's Nick Harmer—but on Thursday we'll premiere 15 all-new Tour Stops.
+ Embedded Tour Stop Special with Elvis Perkins, Raphael Saadiq, Sebastien Tellier, Emiliana Torrini & Les Savy Fav. Premieres December 31 at 8:30pm EST.
+ Embedded Tour Stop Special with White Rabbits, Black Lips, Jason Isbell, Fucked Up & Amazing Baby. Premieres December 31 at 10pm EST.
+ Embedded Tour Stop Special with Moby, Josh Ritter, Nipsey Hussle, Telepathé & Zee Avi. Premieres December 31 at 11:30pm EST.
Got big plans for NYE? Catch Embedded on New Year’s Day or over the weekend, too!
Here’s when to turn on the TV:
+ Thursday night: 12/31 starting at 7pm EST/4pm PST, then again starting at 12 midnight EST/9pm PST.
+ Friday afternoon: 1/1 starting at 4pm EST/1pm PST
+ Saturday morning: 1/2 starting at 10am EST/7am PST
+ Sunday afternoon: 1/3 starting at 5pm EST/2pm EST
And, of course, once they've aired you'll be able to watch all 15 Tour Stops at current.com/tourstop, plus our channels on Hulu, YouTube and MySpace.
Let me know who you're most excited to see on New Year's Eve and I'll do my best to dig up some behind-the-scenes details from our producers!

Current TV is re-airing Embedded, a six-part music special that gives you intimate, exclusive access to artists, and here at the blog we’re packing in everything you need to know about each section of each show into one handy post.
We'd spent serious time with Death Cab for Cutie when documenting their album "Narrow Stairs." After that many hours with a band you'll learn plenty you weren't expecting to, like that bassist Nick Harmer is one hell of a photographer. His specialty is making "tilt-shift miniatures," photos that look as if they've been shrunk or shot from an airplane, skewing your perspective. Nick took us along for a Tour Stop segment in San Francisco, then walked us through his own post-production process.
In this outtake, Nick gives a step-by-step tutorial in Photoshop:
Here are more of Nick's own photos, from his Flickr:

Current Music landed some big names long before Embedded: Radiohead played all of "In Rainbows" on New Year's Eve 2006. We crashed MoMA to film a show with Sigur Ros and then let the Flaming Lips crash Current to debut their Christmas on Mars. We recruited thousands of fans to help make "All Eyes on My Morning Jacket."
But it was the time we spent with Death Cab For Cutie as the band finished their album "Narrow Stairs" and prepared to go on tour—captured in a half-hour special called "Open Windows"—that we pointed to when explaining to our bosses (and to managers, artists and record labels) just what kind of show we wanted to make more of. [Watch a preview for of the show here; sadly our rights to the full piece have expired, so it's not online.]

Want to score an awesome limited edition poster for Current Music Presents: Embedded? (Trust me, you do. I've gotten a tease and they're awesome.)
Here's what you do. Go to this page for Embed Embedded. Now, if you aren't logged into your current.com account (or you don't have one—what?? it takes 1 minute or you can use Facebook Connect!), it's going to kick you back to log in. Once you have and are logged into a current.com account, it'll take you back to the Embed Embedded page, where you can copy the code from that box below the video. Then go paste that in your blog, MySpace, message board, or other places that like HTML. Only video plays generated using THIS CODE—which the eagle eyed among you will notice includes your current.com username—will count towards your total video views. Whoever generates the most video views gets the poster. Got it? Good.
This is our Embed Embedded video of the week. It's Death Cab for Cutie's Nick Harmer in San Francisco, talking about the "Full House" house. It's part of next week's episode, in which Nick teaches about tilt-shift photography, his favorite way to chill while on tour. (Don't lift the embed code from this video if you want to participate—follow the instructions above, get your own, blog it, get people to watch it, etc. Right?)
And while we're at it, let me publicly acknowledge our first two top-video-view-getters: Current.com users underdogthedj and FROLAB.Want to score an awesome limited edition poster for Current Music Presents: Embedded?... more

Silversun Pickups aren't the only artist on Current Music Presents: Embedded who has crossed our path before.
Last year, Swedish singer Lykke Li guest hosted the Daily Fix, our now-defunct, then-daily music show:
Now she's back for Embedded's Tour Stop segment. The daily grind of a life on the road often leaves traveling musicians with odd little pockets of time in cities they've never before visited and may never see again. But most people still have a little routine—they track down an art museum, take photographs, seek out the world's most perfect cup of coffee. Lykke Li likes to scour through thrift stores like an archaeologist, trying to divine what a town's citizens must have been like based on what clothes they left behind.
Here's a little tease of our shopping trip with her as she searched for something to wear to a show in San Francisco that night:

Ben Harper has built one of the largest and most loyal followings in the world.
We get Embedded for a day in Ben's life as he introduces us to Relentless7, his new band, and takes us inside his family's music store to school us on his roots.
Then Ben goes into producer mode in the studio with his Aussie protégé hand-picked by the late Heath Ledger, and shows us there's no detail too small to obsess over when overseeing a fashion line.
Plus, Death Cab For Cutie bassist Nick Harmer tweaks our world perspective with tilt-shift photography in this Tour Stop. And Fleet Foxes return to Current TV, sneaking into an abandoned wing of of the Grand Palais in Paris for an amazing acoustic performance of "Blue Ridge Mountains."
Current Music Presents: Embedded is a six part special that puts you on the ground and behind the scenes with unrivaled access to your favorite musicians. We've traveled the world, going beyond performances to bring you the most intimate and unfiltered moments in artists' lives. When others stop the cameras, we capture the real story of today's top musicians.

Chris Walla And J. Robbins Create 'Mercury'
October 12, 2009 - Not everyone can write and record a song in two days, but that's the Project Song challenge faced by Chris Walla (of Death Cab For Cutie) and J. Robbins (of Jawbox and Burning Airlines). What made this project especially difficult was that the two had never even met before they stepped into NPR's performance studio.
But it didn't take long for Robbins to pick up his bass guitar, for Walla to pick up a guitar, and for the two to begin their musical friendship.
I supplied some inspiration for their song: photo collages created by artist Tom Chambers. They chose a photograph of a house in a canyon filled with water, tilted and flooded. Not far from the house is a dog on a boat, floating either toward or away from the house. I also supplied a series of words. They selected the word "cerebral" and promised when they wrote the song not to be too cerebral about it.
Chris Walla and J. Robbins were joined by Robbins' friend, drummer Darren Zentec. The song they created, "Mercury," takes its subject matter from that photograph, which is a bit of a cataclysmic scenario turned into a song about the climate crisis.
And a great song it is. You can hear the music and watch a video documenting the creative process as it unfolds.Chris Walla And J. Robbins Create 'Mercury'

"Tim Robbins jokes that he could've given the title "While Rome Burns" to his new festival at the Actors’ Gang. Times are tough, people are angry, "and they have every right to be," says the Oscar-winning actor and artistic director of the Culver City-based theater company. "There've been really bad decisions made that we're paying the bill for now."
Like most cultural entities, the Gang, one of L.A.'s most accomplished theatrical institutions, has been scorched financially by the economic crisis. Earlier this summer, the ensemble's accountant even recommended that, to save money, the Gang should consider temporarily not producing theater and just focus on its extensive educational and community outreach programs.
Robbins' incredulous three-word response gave the new festival its name: "WTF?!" That scrappily emphatic statement of purpose expresses the outlook of the ambitious endeavor, which opens Tuesday and runs through Dec. 19.
"I'm not ignoring the economy," Robbins says. "We are flying in the face of it. We are saying, 'This is not going to stop us.' And so the best way we can figure out for it not to stop us is to do more than we ever have in the past."
Curated by Robbins, "WTF?!" will mix film screenings, live music, theater, poetry, dance performances and readings, among other activities. Several will be performed by members of the Gang, such as the double-bill performance "Sole Mates" and "Death and Giggles" by Daisuke Tsuji, who has toured as a clown with Cirque du Soleil.
Other events will bring in outside artists. Among the marquee names who'll lend their presence to the Gang's intimate 99-seat space at the Ivy Substation for the festival will be Jackson Browne, Tenacious D, John Doe of X, Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine and Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie.""Tim Robbins jokes that he could've given the title "While Rome... more
