After 2000, the media focused a great deal of attention on punch-card voting (remember "hanging chads"?) This led to the passage of the 2002 Help America Vote Act, which paved the way for the widespread adoption of e-voting machines. But however promising these machines may have seemed, they did- and still do- pose major problems, including security risks, unreliability, and even incorrect vote tallying.
