Anna and George from CompletelyNovel.com take a trip to the Orange Prize Readers' Day in Birmingham to see a host of fabulous female writers talking about their books with over 500 readers from the West Midlands.
The event was put on by the Birmingham Book Festival, the Reading Agency and the West Midlands Readers' Network and the discussions were chaired by Kate Mosse, the honorary director of the Orange Prize for Fiction.

Monday 4 May 2009: A street party and protest was called in the seaside resort of Brighton by anti-militarist campaign group Smash EDO.
Brighton is home to the EDO/ITT factory that builds bomb release mechanisms for the US, UK and Israeli military. The campaign last year saw several large protests calling to shut the factory and end weapons manufacturing in the city.

More recently, in January this year several campaigners were arrested after breaking in and decommissioning the factory, causing £300,000 worth of damage to computers and machinery.
This year's protest, the largest demonstration yet, saw some 1,500 protestors take to the streets to target all businesses that profit, invest or assist in the weapons factory day-to-day running. But when a MacDonald's fast food outlet was targeted, the riot police moved in and the demonstration deteriorated into an afternoon of clashes with the authorities.
MacDonald's are listed as owning 61.500 shares in the ITT Corporation.

1 April 2009 - Financial Fools Day: As the 29 G20 leaders gathered in London, thousands came out on to the streets of the financial district to protest a wide range of issues from climate change to the failing capitalist system and tax payers bailout of the international banking system.
10,500 police were drafted in, at an estimated cost of £10 million, to police the protests and protect the banking institutions from what the police had deemd "the summer of rage". The end product was two policers suspended, scores injured and hospitalised and one man dead after being attacked by an unidentified member of the TSG (Territorial Support Group) riot squad.
Global Economic Meltdown follows on from last year's short film Global Economic Crisis, which documented the initial protests as the UK government bailed out the banks to a sum of £500 billion.

Shell Oil in County Mayo, Ireland.
For over 9 years local people of Erris have had the ugly face of Shell Oil on their doorstep and have remained strong in their refusal to allow a raw gas pipeline to be laid through their lands.
This short film from 2008 show locals working with international environmental activists and the importance of this battle:
All the while since then the people continue to be harrassed, threatened, verbally & physically assaulted, arrested, taken to court, and imprisoned for attempt to keep their livelihoods of fishing and farming on ancestral lands.
Local Gardai have been used as private security, council have turned blind eyes to locals concerns and even the Irish Government openly allow this company to flaunt national and international laws.
2009 - Shell, trailing its appaling human rights and environmental record behind itself like an engorged tapeworm, has declared intent to move forward with its ill thought plans.

JUSTICE is an exhibition in Bristol UK that brings together work from five artists from France and the US - C215, Dan23, Bruno Leyval, Least Wanted and MC1984.
All of the work in the exhibition is based on the themes of Law and Order. The show includes specific installations, photography, prints, and stencils, all placed within the the Bridewell Police Station’s cells.
