The Flaming Lips have finally released their long-awaited film debut, Christmas On Mars: A Fantastical Film Freak-out Featuring The Flaming Lips. The film, which took over 7 years to complete, was directed by lead singer Wayne Coyne and stars members of the band as well as Adam Goldberg.
In this special, Wayne Coyne hosts a half hour of Current Music where he discusses the making of the film and soundtrack as well as giving our audience a look at clips from the movie, behind the scenes footage, and other inside thoughts on the themes of the film.
The New York Times wrote that Christmas On Mars is "destined for cult status. Forget the plot, it's about textures: black and white images with psychedelic bursts; dashes of David Lynch, the '70s midnight movie Dark Star and 2001; an echo of The Wizard of Oz; and in a riff on maternity, maybe an iota of The Matrix."The Flaming Lips have finally released their long-awaited film debut, Christmas On... more

Weston: Every article I’ve read about you tries to describe your sound. How about you tell us instead - at least that way it will be accurate.
Violens: Generally, we’ve described our sound as spiritual/aggressive, psychedelic/creepy… warm/fuzzy? We hope it’s all those things and more. Our influences are all over the place and obvious at the same time. Violens is a melding of the somewhat contrasting words “violence” and “violins”, and the images and emotions these two words evoke is what we strive to conjure in the music.
W: You’ve been opening for MGMT and Yeasayer, touring now with Grizzly Bear, and will soon be playing with Grand Archives. Pretty diverse, but they all want you - what’s the connection?
V: Much of this is due to the friendships we’ve developed with MGMT and Grizzly Bear (with all of us being local) and the mutual interest in each other’s music. We are fans of both groups and honored to support them. Jorge recently had a great time remixing ‘Time To Pretend’ for MGMT. We just got off a short tour run with them, which was amazing, and we’re looking forward to opening for them on their UK and Ireland tour in November. We don’t know the music of Grand Archives well, but from what we’ve heard, we’re psyched to play the Seaport Music Festival with them.Weston: Every article I’ve read about you tries to describe your sound.
