When I was little, I begged my mother for a loft bed.
[go to site to view image of loft bed]
My tastes were not this refined and our ceilings not this high, but if someone had showed my ten-year-old self this photo, that ten-year-old would immediately place it in front of her mother triumphantly, exclaiming that this is exactly what she needed.
(It’s too bad that ten-year-old had just gotten a new bed frame and would use that same frame for years, until she moved bought a new bed that could accommodate more than one small woman and a cat. Sex: the killer of all twin bed frames.)
My obsession with loft beds – and lofts, and other layered sorts of things – had little to do with being up high, or having the privacy that comes with a bed out of an adult’s line of sight. I just liked the idea of using space to my advantage. I wanted to utilize as much of my bedroom as possible, creating rooms within rooms and neat little crevices. Who cares about floors and walls and ceilings when you have all this space in between?
Recently, I found out one of my friends is getting his very own loft bed. I’m jealous. I’m also excited, because his new obsession – decorating his bedroom and the space beneath his bed – has given me my own lofty ideas about utilizing and celebrating space, the most exciting of which is the idea of mobiles.

Disease, disease and more disease -- this new iPhone application thrives on it, as people can become vigilantes in the wolrd of health, gaining information on the outbreaks of disease near them, and letting others know about it.
The "Outbreaks Near Me" application is based on the free HealthMap epidemiological web service, and allows users to submit information about recent outbreaks in various locations close to them. The process dubbed "participatory epidemiology" is explained by Clark Freifeld, a founder of HealthMap and Ph.D. student in MIT Media Lab’s New Media Medicine Group:
“What we were envisioning is things like … say, you’re in a clinical setting as a patient or clinician and seeing lots of unusual cases of something, you’d be able to note that down and submit it into the system.
"t’s about empowering citizens in the cause of public health to both provide them with information and allow them to contribute information to share with others."Disease, disease and more disease -- this new iPhone application thrives on it, as... more

The mobile phone directory story which was posted up on to current last month, informed us of an online system, which would allow members of the public to obtain numbers from the directory.
Well news has been confirmed that this directory has been suspended, after numerous people attempted to remove their details from the system. the 118 800 service had been running for only a month, but controversy was deep after the directory had up to 15 million mobile numbers on its database -- all of which obtained from market researchers and list brokers.
the site is currently under "major developments" as a means to "improve the experience for [their] customers".The mobile phone directory story which was posted up on to current last month,... more

I don't know whether to find this kind of technology cool or ever so slightly scary, but Nokia have just announced that it is to develop a platform that will allow us to control 'smart homes' with our mobile phones, meaning that anything, including frigdes, kettles, TVs, Net access and heating systems will be able to be remotely controlled at the press of a few mobile buttons.
There are, of course, also a number of green and security uses, as Nokia explains:
"It will be possible for example to monitor and control electricity usage, to switch devices on and off, and monitor different objects, such as temperature, camera, and motion." Meaning that presumably greater energy savings can be made. Just woe betide you and your family should the phone get into the wrong hands..
The system is expected to launch at the end of next year.I don't know whether to find this kind of technology cool or ever so slightly... more

Ever wonder what that strange humming-clicking noise is that's constantly in the background these days? It's the sound of millions (217 million to be precise) of text messages being sent and whizzing over our heads everyday in the UK.
According to the Mobile Data Association (MDA), Britons are sending around 60m more messages a day compared to the same period in 2007 - a jump of 38%. Weekly, that amounts to an astounding figure in excess of 1.5bn texts and an average of 6.5bn a month!

Last year, a report on “mobile policing” caused an uproar in the media. NAJA, an acronym for security agents, officially denied inspecting young men’s and women’s mobile phones in public places. Nonetheless, a special crime prevention and combat squad in Eastern Azerbaijan province took the first step in this regard and became the first to enforce the mobile phone inspection law.
According to reports by Shahab News, an order was issued on Tuesday morning to special crime prevention and combat squads in Eastern Azerbaijan province to inspect the mobile phones of “people of interest” selectively in public. Authorities in Eastern Azerbaijan province stressed that the operation is intended to counter those who are promoting corruption using Blue-Tooth technology, and that the operation will be conducted in cooperation with the judicial office. Violators will be detained, their mobile phones will be confiscated, and their cases will be sent to the local general and revolutionary court for review.
Although a similar announcement has not been made in other provinces, and inspecting young citizens’ mobile phones is considered illegal, there is a possibility that a special crime prevention and combat squad will begin implementing similar surveillance in other provinces.
The Shahab News report indicated that Malek Azhdar-Sharifi, chief prosecutor in Eastern Azerbaijan province, emphasized confronting Blue-Tooth users who are alleged to use immoral material. Mr. Azhdar-Sharifi stated: “Those responsible for distributing immoral CDs and Blue-Tooth technology with be prosecuted to the full extent of the law”.
Mr. Azhdar-Sharifi further added: “the subject of immoral CDs and Blue-Tooth technology is a very sensitive subject and on certain occasions has offended the public. It appears that this issue is another tactic to exploit and subvert our Islamic ways and values by [importing] the outside world’s corruption. We should consider this issue very serious”.
On implementing this law Mr. Azhdar-Sharifi stated: “security forces and dedicated revolutionary guards must coordinate their actions with the judicial office to take an effective step in eradicating these promoters”.
In his statements Mr. Azhdar-Sharifi turned his attention to prosecutors across the province and reminded them: “considering the enormity of the situation across the province, no compromises should be made when combating promoters and distributors of immoral products”.
According to a Fars report, which initially published news on this subject, Yahya Mirza-Mohammadi, the general and revolutionary prosecutor for Tabriz, also made a statement in this session and said: “young people, instead of spending their time being educated and using their energy in positive ways, are swayed toward these corrupt ways that are very destructive”.
The chairman of the special crime prevention and combat squad added: “it is a worrisome situation […] we should counter the issue legally and seriously”.
The chairman further added; “security, intelligence and revolutionary agents are requested to uncover and arrest those responsible for such a destructive phenomenon and take legal action in combating and turning them in to the judicial system”.
Mr. Mirza-Mohammadi stressed confronting the promoters of corruption in a serious way and stated: “I can earnestly announce the I and other colleagues in judicial offices, especially the offices responsible for reviewing issues related to morality, will confront the corrupt individuals without any reservation. It appears to me that there is no difference between these violators and those who are considered irredeemably corrupt, and we can treat these types of violators in the same way that we deal with irredeemable violators.Last year, a report on “mobile policing” caused an uproar in the media.... more
