The two participatory media properties are looking to join forces to give viewers (somewhat) more of a say when Obama and McCain square off.
Twitter is continuing to find its way into mainstream media, the latest example being today’s announcement that they have teamed up with Current TV to include Tweets in the cable network’s upcoming coverage of the Presidential debates. The Tweets – which will be selected by Current TV and Twitter staff - will take the form of an overlay on screen. To participate, viewers will need to use “#current” in their tweets during the debates, the first of which airs next Friday – September 26th.
The partnership with Current TV follows a slew of recent integrations of Twitter into mainstream media. Rick Sanchez has been reading Tweets and interacting with his growing Twitter audience on-air for CNN, while political network C-SPAN made heavy use of the microblogging tool during the recent Democratic and Republican conventions.
It's no MTV/MySpace Dialogue, and neither Obama nor McCain will ever see a word you Tweet, (and what's up with the fact that Twitter and Current will filter the Tweets?) but hey, it beats watching Wolf Blitzer for an hour and a half . . .The two participatory media properties are looking to join forces to give viewers... more

The statistics are compelling and from them it is clear that without profound reform, the millennials stand to suffer disproportionately from the impending healthcare crisis. The financial burden that healthcare is placing on the future of this country is evident in a vital yet unsustainable Medicare program, the fading of a once dominant American competitive advantage in the global economy and the growing inability of our healthcare system to guarantee affordable access to all Americans. With a problem as large and complex as healthcare's rising cost, it is difficult to even know where to start. What we do know is that we should start today. The statistics are compelling and from them it is clear that without profound reform,... more

Confused by Twitter? Sure, it's understandable. Lee LeFever and the folks at Common Craft give a simple and clear introduction to the microblogging service. Although it doesn't cover some of the other features that make Twitter so useful (@messaging, d messaging, and SMS messaging), the concept is thoroughly explained.

Since the start of the DNC, I've been watching the use of social media tools such as Twitter very closely while pondering the impact these new forms of communication actually have on politics, government, news, and most importantly television.
Are you using Twitter? We're interested in trying out a little social media experiment/discussion, and would love to invite you to join in. If you are a Twitter user, please respond below letting me know that you're interested, and make sure to tell me the best way to contact you.
You can send me a message on Current.com, reply @current on Twitter, or follow us at: http://twitter.com/current.
Also, if you know anyone else that might be interested in this, please send them the link to this post. The more the merrier!

The group of law enforcement agencies charged with handling security during the Republican National Convention had $50 million to spend on weapons and equipment.
However, the greatest advancement in the age-old grudge match between an angry citizenry and the state was not found on the side of the police. A free and public social-media website called Twitter, which publishes brief messages sent in from cell phones and computers, was a game-changer for protesters, organizers, and journalists covering the event.
Protest organizers were able to use social-networking tools to quickly assemble and disassemble groups of demonstrators, summon media and legal observers, and keep track of the arrested and detained.
By the end of the convention there had been 1,375 sources posting more than 17,000 messages about the events inside and outside the RNC convention. The group of law enforcement agencies charged with handling security during the... more

(Newser) - The mini-missives that online friends send each other create what experts call "ambient awareness" a form of contact akin to picking up a friend's body language or asides in the same room. Alone they add up to little, "but taken together, over time, the little snippets coalesce into a surprisingly sophisticated portrait of your friends and family members lives, like thousands of dots making a pointillist painting," Clive Thompson writes in the New York Times.
It's like I can distantly read everyones mind; one user told Thompson. I love that. I feel like Im getting to something raw about my friends." The messages can also spark social contact when friends read about each other's plans. But there are possible downsides to online friendship too, like losing sight of the real thing. At one point I realized I had a friend whose child I had seen, via photos on Flickr, grow from birth to 1 year old, one user said. I thought, I really should go meet her in person.

perspctv.com is aggregating social news data from sources like Twitter, CNN, blogs, Google, and nearly any other social media stream out there. They chart it together into graphs that breakdown Obama/McCain polls, and juxtapose it with live streams of content coming off of blogs, Twitter, and the like.
Very fascinating to watch. How large a factor do you think social networks and social media will ultimately play into the 2008 Election and campaigns?perspctv.com is aggregating social news data from sources like Twitter, CNN, blogs,... more

SAN FRANCISCO (September 15, 2008) - Current, a new breed of media company
that works with its young adult audience to create and distribute media, has
partnered with the pulse of what’s happening—Twitter, to present “Hack the
Debate,” creating unprecedented interactivity for viewers of the 2008
presidential debate broadcasts.
Beginning with the first presidential debate on September 26, “Hack the
Debate” will, for the very first time, integrate real-time Twitter messages
(aka “tweets”) over major portions of a live television broadcast. As
Twitter users tweet throughout the course of the live broadcasts, Current
and Twitter will collect comments regarding the debate and layer the
individual messages over the debate feed.
Current and Twitter will apply the same technique to all four live debate
broadcasts, allowing the audience to participate directly in the broadcast
while watching real-time debate responses from other viewers.
“Hack the Debate” schedule on Current TV (all times 8:45 p.m. ET/5:45 p.m.
PT):
· Presidential Debate #1 – Friday, Sept. 26
· Vice Presidential Debate – Thursday, Oct. 2
· Presidential Debate #2 – Tuesday, Oct. 7
· Presidential Debate #3 – Wednesday, Oct. 15
“The debate stage is only set for two candidates, but Current was founded to
make room for millions of participants,” says Joel Hyatt, CEO, Current.
“We’re thrilled to work with Twitter and take advantage of their extremely
powerful communication platform, giving people a chance to speak directly to
Current’s nationwide television audience.”
In addition to the TV broadcasts, each “Hack the Debate” presentation will
also stream live on Current.com. While Current and Twitter will actively
search tweets for compelling debate comments, Twitter users can highlight
and push their “Hack the Debate” comments by using “#current” in their
tweets. Users can also ask questions about participating via Twitter by
directing questions to “@current.”
