Again,....a matter of opinion here,.....
From perhaps "the worst" . . .
One step forward, two steps back.
In 2002, Marvel decided to dig up one of their old 50’s Western heroes, probably just to keep the copyright. Thing is, nobody really cares about Western comics anymore.
“So how do we make it interesting?” they must have thought “I know! Let’s make him a big flaming homo!”
And with that, the Rawhide Kid (get it? get it? Raw Hide?? *sigh*) became the first gay lead character to get his own comic book from either Marvel or DC.
The book was filled with Queer Eye for the Straight Guy style stereotypes, and an actual caption from the first issue which had the Kid thinking about the Lone Ranger along the lines of this:
"I think that mask and the powder blue outfit are fantastic. I can certainly see why the Indian follows him around!" In the spirit of the Old West, please just shoot me now.
Now, I don’t mind making fun of stereotypes (God knows they exist for a reason), but when they come entirely from the minds and mouths of a bunch of straight guys in an office in New York, it might as well be a bunch of white guys who think it's ok for them to use the N word because they have black friends.
In any event, this gave Marvel about five minutes of free publicity, even trotting out good old Stan Lee on to Larry King on CNN to talk about it - even though in all likelihood he didn’t even know there was a gay Rawhide Kid 'til sometime that morning.

Jasmine is an emerging artist that combines classic pop music infused with a smooth R&B/Soul attitude. Many have watched her open for Lil Wayne, Day 26, Omarion, and J Holiday. At 20 years young, Jasmine is ready to make a lasting impact on the music world with her debut EP, “The Rest of My Story.” Still an indie artist, Jasmine has been weighing her options at major labels. Label meetings have put her in front of music execs such as Def Jam's The Dream and Sha Money XL. According to Def Jam's Senior VP of A&R, "Jasmine has an unique sound and look that identifies with some of my favorite artists like Rihanna, her edge is like FeFe Dobson. She's a pop-star." - (Sha Money XL).
Jasmine goes against the grain in a society that places such a heavy emphasis on sexual appearance. Instead of showing a lot of skin or focusing on her beauty, she's more involved with staying true to herself and to her art. She says, “I feel and experience the same thing every other 20 year old does but I don’t see an equal representation of who we are as a generation. All of the customary subject matter remains, but I approach it in a way that I’m comfortable with. I can still be sexy and cute without having to compromise either myself or my values.” In fact, a lot of young girls have been mimicking her hip, classy, and sleek look that has become her signature.

I'm often being told that there is only one God and that God is typically the God of whatever religion the person I'm talking to is a member of. These folks seem to be rather absolute-hungry. So eager to put God in a box—four cozy walls to contain their ideology and they close the flaps and seal it shut from the inside. "There! No more outside influences. Now back to what I was saying about the one and only true God." Wait a minute, the walls of these boxes are pretty thin, you can hear what's going on inside the other boxes. The sound may be muffled, but you can hear the passion in the "other" voices. Some of those inside your box seem to be getting a little curious. Looks like they want to break free.
Hey, I wanna see what's going on outside.
No, you must stay inside this box.
It's the one true box. Those other boxes are boxes of deception.
Yes, seriously. They ain't talkin' about nothin' in those other boxes. You were lucky to be born in this box. You are a member of the chosen ones.
But what the people in the other boxes?
Well, we should warn them.
We will. We're planning on sending some people out to break into the other boxes and "make some suggestions."
Can I be one of those people?
Actually...no...you seem like the type who may be charmed by what they have to say.
I promise I won't.
You say that now, but I know your type.
So then I'm doomed to a life in this one box?
You're not doomed, you are chosen.
But I feel doomed.
What am I going to do with you?
Let me out of this damn box!!!
But I want out. I want to see what else is out there.
The devil's out there. You want to hang with the devil?
How could it be any worse than this?

"I don't have a job, a home or a car! I don't have anything and you want me to apologize to you because you don't have anything either!? Spare me! Why don't you go cry to Oprah, Jennifer Lopez, Tyler Perry, Alex Rodriguez, Kobe Bryant or Will Smith!!!"
You can lob epithets like racist, bigot, homophobe, misogynist and the like at the infamous White Man and no one will say much. It's expected. He is The Man after all. He's not even human. Just an oppressive automaton who is responsible for all the world's ills and he even has the audacity to not apologize for simply being? How dare he!? Good thing there are liberal white men out there. At least they express their tacit guilt. But really, what is inherently wrong about him taking pride in his European heritage? Is it because you view your existence as inauspicious due to this heritage? He exploited and oppressed you and because of this there should be no celebration of European virtues. You supported his whims through your labor. He killed you. He took your land. He deceived you. He raped your women. But what is it about him that makes him behave this way and if he thinks himself superior is he truly superior or do you give him power by thinking him evil? What if he is just like you?
What if he feels powerless even though you say he controls "everything?" What if he feels like nothing? Why must you treat him as if he is some comic book-esque supervillian? Why do you laugh in his face when he expresses his frustration? What does this say about you? Are you envious of the access his skin color affords him? Do you see his lack of melanin as a blessing? Do you not feel your abundance of melanin is a curse? Do you have to overcompensate in order to battle against a deep-seated inferiority complex? Is your black or brown pride a by-product of the acknowledgement of his existence? Who were you before you found out about him? How did you see yourself then? Probably not as brown or black. Perhaps you were just you.
That's it! That's why the white man is evil! He made me acknowledge the fact that I was 'some thing.' I'm not 'some thing,' I am some ONE!
Is this all his fault? What if it is all OUR fault? And by 'our' I mean us, not them...and by 'not them' I mean them.
Hey, I clicked those hyperlinks and I'm lost. Us? Not them? What?
We're all lost. Click the link below and let's see if we can build a compass...together.

I tip my hat to anyone who can use a sewing machine. Period. The last time I even looked at a machine, the presser foot fell off. That's right, folks. I didn't even have to touch the machine, and still managed to break it. If you can use one of the gosh-darned things, you have my respect.
Seriously, though, I love this dress. It was made to be a Halloween costume, but really, I don't see why it couldn't be worn more often? It's just a sweet little blue dress...that just happens to be made entirely of awesome. (I think the itty bitty hat is my favorite part.)

Lady Gaga fans in the US can now take a university course on the pop star’s rise to fame and her global cult following. Lady Gaga and the Sociology of Fame is being offered by the University of South Carolina and will attempt to “unravel some of the sociological relevant dimensions'” of her fame.According to Professor Mathieu Deflem who designed the course, it is the only full-time course of its kind in the US. Professor Deflem told The New York Times that he was instantly entranced with Lady Gaga when he saw her on “The Tonight Show” in January 2009, he has since seen her in concert more than 28 times and met her five times. He owns more than 300 of her records on vinyl and CD and runs the gagafrontrow.net, a fan site with pictures and audio downloads of rare Gaga songs. Professor Deflem said that he was originally going to use Lady Gaga as an example in a course about fame and the celebrity culture, before deciding she was worthy of study in her own right."Then I thought, 'Oh, what the hell? Let's make the whole freaking course about Lady Gaga and her rise to fame.'" he explained to the university's student newspaper, the Daily Gamecock. He added that the course will "look at Lady Gaga as a social event", explaining: "It's not the person, and it's not the music. It's more this thing out there in society that has 10 million followers on Facebook and six million on Twitter. I mean, that's a social phenomenon." Carrie Fisher is still remembered as the plucky Princess Leia in the hit film Star Wars (1977). Her parents, Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher, were a famous Hollywood couple of their day. (Fisher later left Reynolds to marry Elizabeth Taylor.) Carrie Fisher made her feature film debut in 1975's Shampoo (with Warren Beatty), and two years later had her breakthrough with Star Wars. She also joined co-stars Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford in two sequels, The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983). In the 1980s Fisher battled drug addiction and manic-depression and later described her struggles in the semi-autobiographical book Postcards From the Edge (1990). In the 1990s she became known as a screenwriter and "script doctor" for feature films, and since then has had a talk show on TV, Conversations From the Edge, and another novel, The Best Awful (2004, also based on her personal experiences).
She married the singer Paul Simon in 1983, but they separated a year later... She is a half-sister to the actress Joely Fisher... Carrie Fisher has one daughter, Billie Catherine, born in 1992 to Fisher and agent Bryan Lourd... Another actress who has played Star Wars royalty is Natalie Portman.

--It’s the beginning of the school year, and for the University of Baltimore, they’ve just started a new program about the undead. That’s right, Zombie 101 is now an official university course. Taught by Arnold Blumberg, students will watch 16 classic zombie movies and read a bunch of zombie comic books. I wish this course was offered back when I was in school. But there’s so much more that can be taught to students on this subject, so much so that Zombieology should be a full blown major. Here is the zombie major’s course load.

Veteran actress Betty White is the latest Hollywood star to get the comic book treatment.
The 88-year-old performer will be drawn as a cartoon for "Female Force: Betty White," to be produced by Bluewater Productions.
The 32-page book is due to hit stores in November and will retail for $3.99 per copy.
"Betty White has had such an amazing entertainment career ... It's one that has now spanned more than 70 years," Bluewater president and founder Darren G. Davis said in a statement.
The actress has experienced a career comeback on the heels of her role in the 2009 comedy feature "The Proposal," a Super Bowl commercial for Snickers and a much-lauded "Saturday Night Live" hosting gig that landed her an Emmy Award.
White, who gained fame on the "Mary Tyler Moore" show and the sitcom "Golden Girls," is currently starring on TV Land's "Hot in Cleveland." She next stars in the comedy feature "You Again."
"The biggest challenge that the creative team behind this book faced was figuring out how to include as much of this career as possible in one comic," Davis said.
Added the book's writer, Patrick McCray, "Working on the Betty book was an honor and a blast. While covering a new entertainer is always fun, there is something special about profiling an icon."
Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama and Sarah Palin are among the other famous figures who have been included in Bluewater's "Female Force" comic book series.Veteran actress Betty White is the latest Hollywood star to get the comic book... more
