Often found hanging from power lines or melding with urban architecture, Above's site specific stencils, paintings, and installations push past the traditional expectations of graffiti. The evolution of his name from text to a symbol inspired him to explore less conventional media, leading to his trademark wooden mobiles. Whether subtle or massive, his pieces retain an innate sense of beauty through their dialogue with the surrounding environment. Refusing to show his work in galleries, Above has instead "toured" through Europe and North and South America to get his work up. Mr. Jago and Will Barras met while working as telemarketers. Their love of doodling and disdain for their job was fodder for a budding friendship that provided a foundation for their art careers. Soon after they began illustrating, their fluid drawings were featured in Scrawl, Dirty Graphics and Strange Characters, a book that featured UK artists. They started getting work from the exposure they received from Scrawl, and started Scrawl Collective, an agency that has worked with Swatch, Sony Music, Nike, Puma, Burton Snow Boards, Boxfresh, Levis, Addict, and Virgin Mobile. Born and raised in Los Angeles, the influence of the city surfaces in Kofie’s spiraling, mechanical structures, which often resemble abstracted cityscapes and industrial developments. Involved in street art as a teenager, his work began as traditional graffiti-inspired characters; over time, as he began breaking down those characters, they evolved into the massive, architectural paintings he’s now revered for. In addition to appearing on his Draftsmen clothing line and in numerous magazines, Kofie’s artwork has been displayed in exhibitions in major cities throughout Japan and the United States, including Tokyo, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, and Boston.
