A Sydney woman who killed her children with rat poison has been found not guilty of murder, but guilty of manslaughter.
The woman pleaded not guilty to murdering her children by reason of mental illness.
She gave her three-year-old daughter and four-year-old son rat poison before smothering them in February last year.
In letters written at the time she blamed her husband's affair for her actions and claimed to be protecting her children by taking their lives.
At her judge-only trial the prosecutor dismissed arguments by the woman's lawyers that her depression was so severe that it made her incapable of distinguishing right from wrong.
But in finding her guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter, the judge ruled her actions were impaired by an abnormality of the mind.A Sydney woman who killed her children with rat poison has been found not guilty of... more

A 'selfish' mother killed her 20-month-old son by drugging him with painkillers to 'make her life easier', a court heard today.
Laura-Jane Vestuto, 28, crushed up pills into son Renzo's milk and orange juice to stop him crying over several months.
The former childminder had been prescribed amitriptyline by her GP as a pain reliever.
But she stockpiled the drugs and began giving them to Renzo, finally killing him with a dose ten times the safe adult dose. Hospital staff were shocked by her lack of concern when medics tried in vain to revive her son. She later denied giving him drugs in three separate interviews and tried to pin the blame on innocent members of her family.
Her partner and Renzo's father, Yilmaz Hassan, a baker, was initially arrested and held in custody and her own mother was interviewed under police caution.
But Vestuto later admitted she had drugged the child while Mr Hassan a baker, was at work or asleep. On September 9, 2007, Renzo awoke screaming and fighting for breath.
Vestuto raised the alarm with Mr Hassan but when emergency services arrived the baby was grey, had no pulse and was not breathing, He was rushed to the Homerton hospital in Hackney, east London but pronounced dead soon afterwards.
The mother 'surprised others by showing little emotion' at the hospital, the court heard.
Members of Renzo's family - who packed the public gallery yesterday - paid tribute to the little boy yesterday.
Renzo's aunt, Christina Atouguia, wrote on a memorial website: 'He was such a beautiful baby with the biggest, cheekiest smile and laugh and the most beautiful lips.
'Our family have experienced such heartache and emotions that we never thought we would ever have to feel or even existed.
'The pain we are feeling today is just as raw as it was the day he passed away.'
Another aunt, Sevim Hassan, wrote: 'My nephew parted from us suddenly. Only God knows why under such traumatic circumstances....
Doctors also found traces of paracetamol, Ibuprofen and diphenhydramine in the child's system after death.
Judge Peter Thornton QC said Vestuto had drugged her son in order to keep him quiet, make him sleep, calm him and 'make life easier' for herself.
'Instead of bearing the everyday responsibility of being a parent, caring lovingly for your son, even when he was tired or troublesome you embarked on a deliberate course of administering adult drugs knowing it was wrong and risky,' he said.
'You gave the drugs for purely selfish, self-centred reasons thinking only for yourself and not the welfare of the children. This is all the more obvious because you had previously worked with children.'
He added: 'You denied all knowledge of the drug, even when told that Renzo had high levels in his system,' continued the judge.
'These denials were repeated in police interviews. As a result of your denials your long-term partner, the father, who is entirely innocent of any involvement in these offences was arrested and placed in custody.
'You compounded his suffering and grief at the death of hid child by allowing the finger of blame to be pointed wrongly at him and indeed other members of the family who also fell under suspicion.
The judge added: 'I have read your ex-partner's impact statement.
'His is a moving account of how he has lost his partner and one child to the cemetery. The family have suffered and will continue to suffer.
Vestuto, described as having below-average level of intelligence, was initially charged with manslaughter.
But her plea to the lesser charge of causing or allowing Renzo's death was accepted on the basis she 'did not intend to harm' her son.
Amitriptyline was widely prescribed as an anti-depressant and for pain relief in the 1970s and 1980s. It was also used to prevent bed wetting in older children.

Lisa Brown , 21, was found guilty of battering her mother, aged 51, to death and dumping her body.
It was an amateur, bungling murder, carried out with passion and intense violence. Brown launched what the prosecution described as “a night-time surprise assault” at her mother’s home in rural Ayrshire, striking the former health visitor 60 times with a blunt instrument thought to be a torch.
She was helped by her boyfriend, John Wilson, 25, who was convicted of the lesser charge of culpable homicide after a six-week trial at the High Court in Glasgow
Mrs Brown had started legal proceedings over custody of a young child, which Lisa Brown disputed. When she heard that the child was to remain with Mrs Brown, the younger woman resorted to violence. The trial was told that, on the evening of October 18, Brown and Wilson took a train to Mrs Brown’s cottage and attacked her outside. She suffered 49 blows on her head and neck and died from “blunt force trauma”. It was such a vicious assault that Mr Elliot said he was unable to recognise his sister when called to identify her.
The court heard evidence that Mrs Brown was still alive when she was trussed up, placed in the boot of her own Ford Focus and dumped in a nearby burn. The killers were forced to abandon the car after Brown, who did not hold a licence, got it stuck in the verge. The couple then spent the night in the dead woman’s bed.
Initially Brown and Wilson stuck to their “pact” that Mrs Brown had not been home that night. During the trial, however, they blamed each and Wilson, who gave evidence against his former girlfriend, said that she alone had committed the murder.
Wilson claimed his lover warned him that if he went to police he would not see the child she was expecting. Lisa Brown gave birth in April while on remand in Cornton Vale prison.Lisa Brown , 21, was found guilty of battering her mother, aged 51, to death and... more

Texas Mom Says Devil Made Her Decapitate Her 3-Week-Old Baby
SAN ANTONIO (AP) - A woman charged with murdering her 3 1/2-week-old son used a knife and two swords to dismember the child and ate parts of his body, including his brain, before stabbing herself in the torso and slicing her own throat, police said Monday.
Otty Sanchez, 33, is charged with capital murder in the death of her infant son, Scott Wesley Buchholtz-Sanchez. She was recovering from her wounds at a hospital, and was being held on $1 million bail.
San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said the early Sunday morning attack occurred a week after the child's father moved out. The child's aunt and two cousins, ages 5 and 7, were in the house, but none were harmed.
McManus, who appeared uncomfortable as he addressed reporters, said Sanchez apparently ate the child's brain and some other body parts. She also tore his face off, chewed off three of his toes and decapitated the infant before stabbing herself.
"It's too heinous for me to describe it any further," McManus said.
Officers called to Sanchez's house at about 5 a.m. Sunday found her sitting on the couch "screaming that she killed her baby," police spokesman Joe Rios said. They found the boy's body in a bedroom.
Police said Sanchez said the devil told her to kill her son.
"It was a spontaneous utterance," McManus said. "She said she was hearing voices."
Sanchez does not yet have a lawyer, police said, and was hospitalized in San Antonio. The police declined to identify other family members.
No one answered the door Monday at Sanchez's home, where the blinds were shut. A hopscotch pattern and red hearts were drawn on the walk leading up to the house.
Neighbor Luis Yanez said everyone on the street was appalled by the news.
"Why would you do that to your baby?" said Yanez, 23, a tire technician. "It brings chills to you. They can't defend themselves."Woman accused of killing newborn ate brain
