"Mercury and the Kidney"
A study published in the Journal of Occupational Medicine in 2010 revealed that the kidney retains more mercury than any other organ in the body and estimation of urinary mercury concentration is of limited value in the diagnosis of mercurialism, as high excretion rates may be seen without clinical disorder, or mercurialism may be present when urinary excretion is low.

Why would this be such a big deal ?
More than 26 million Americans have chronic kidney disease and most don’t know it.
From The National Kidney Foundation: according to investigators at Johns Hopkins and Tufts-New England Medical Center, a recently-published study based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey estimated that there are 26,000,000 adults with evidence of kidney disease in the United States alone and most are completely unaware of their condition. This number increases the most recent estimates of the rate of chronic kidney disease (CKD) by 30%, from 10% of the U.S. population (1988-1994) to 13.1% (1999-2004).”

Amalgam Risk Assessment finds 120 million Americans over daily safe dose of mercury from amalgam fillings.
it was determined that some 67.2 million Americans would exceed the Hg dose associated with the REL of 0.3 ug/m3 established by the US Environmental Protection Agency in 1995, whereas 122.3 million Americans would exceed the dose associated with the REL of 0.03 ug/m3 established by the California Environmental Protection Agency in 2008."

In addition, Inorganic mercury levels in Americans rose from 2% in 1999 to over 30% in 2006 and was associated with a rise in liver, immune and pituitary dysfunction.

So we've established that mercury levels are rising to levels where we see adverse health effects in the population and the dental amalgam fillings are the number one source of mercury exposure in over 120 million americans. Also the kidney retains more mercury than any other organ and that 26 million Americans have kidney disease and estimation of urinary mercury concentration is of limited value in the diagnosis of mercurialism, as high excretion rates may be seen without clinical disorder, or mercurialism may be present when urinary excretion is low."Mercury and the Kidney"

When reporting on how much mercury is released from dental mercury amalgam fillings most journalists cite The American Dental Association's spokesman Rodney Mackert's "estimates" without understanding any of the inherant flaws in his methodology. Read on to find out more about the debunking of his dubious claim that only "minute amounts of mercury are released by dental amalgam"..
Vas Aposhian (Aposhian, 1992 ) documented the fact , now universally accepted by the scientific community, that dental amalgam fillings contribute the majority of mercury body burden in the general population. These findings have been corroborated by other research including human cadaver studies.
Further, it is well known that when mercury from amalgam passes to the cord blood, it will reach the fetus and accumulate there.
Boyd Haley PhD quantitatively measured mercury release from dental amalgams ranging from 4 - 22 micrograms/cm2 per day - "without galvanism, excess heat or pressure from chewing - all factors that increase mercury release from amalgams in the mouth". This study was done using very small single-spill fillings in a sealed container.
These measurements showed that mercury release from amalgams vastly exceed the ʻestimatedʼ release reported by ADA 'authority' Rodney Mackert, DDS, who claimed that 7 fillings release only a single microgram of mercury per day - according to a Wall Street Journal article. It is important to note that Mackert, rather than directly measuring the actual quantity of mercury released by amalgams, instead "estimated" the amount of mercury released from amalgam fillings by looking at the mercury level in the urine of several test subjects. Mackert has no training in toxicology as he is a practicing dental materials expert.

Researchers Dr. Mark and David Geier reveal how "silver" fillings, which are actually composed of 50% mercury, are not only a source of mercury, but in a relatively short time begin to block basic functions of cells when placed in children's teeth! They show how the data from the "Children's Amalgam Trial" studies, originally published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, and purported to prove the safety of mercury amalgam, actually show a dose-dependent toxicity in a key metabolic system.

Dan Laks, lead author of the study "Assessment of chronic mercury exposure within the U.S. population, National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1999--2006)" analyzed data from the CDC's National Health Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and found that in the 1999-2000 NHANES survey, mercury was detected in the blood of 2 percent of women aged 18 to 49, that level rose to 30 percent of women by 2005-2006 and it was associated with a rise in liver, immune and pituitary dysfunction.

Richard Deth P.h.D. testifies to the FDA about his recent published study in the Journal for Alzheimer's Disease that performed a meta-analysis of 106 case-control or comparative cohort studies to associate mercury as a causative factor in Alzheimer's disease, linking inorganic mercury to Alzheimer's Disease. Noting that the main source of mercury in the human body is dental amalgam (1 - 27 ug a day)

Californians for Green Dentistry has put a petition online collecting signatures supporting a ban on dental mercury which will be sent to California City Councils. Sign the petition now !
Target: California City Councils
Sponsored by: Californians for Green Dentistry

Dental amalgam (deceptively marketed as silver fillings) is a primitive and polluting cavity-filling material that contains 50% mercury, a known neurotoxin and reproductive toxin. Even though modern environmentally-friendly alternatives are available, dentists are still the second largest buyers of mercury in the United States where more mercury resides in human mouths than in all other products combined.
The mercury implanted into the teeth of unsuspecting patients ultimately ends up back in our environment: (1) in our water via dental clinic releases and household toilets; (2) in our air via cremation, sludge incineration, dental clinic emissions, and human respiration; and (3) in our land via landfills, burials, and fertilizer.
As a result, dental clinics are by far the greatest source of mercury in our wastewater and a major source of mercury in the fish we eat. The U.S. EPA estimates that alread one in six babies is at risk for developmental disorders due to mercury exposure in the womb.
California taxpayers are getting ripped off by mercury-using dentists. We pay to clean up after these reckless polluters while the California Dental Association lobbies to block laws that would require dentists to be environmentally responsible. Tell your city council that it is time to hold public hearings to address the dental mercury pollution problem in your community!

A number of studies clearly establish that the largest source of nonoccupational Hg exposure for the general population is their dental amalgam fillings. Inordinately high levels of Hg (22,000 times greater than that in control subjects) have been found in the heart tissue of patients with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (IDCM).

For over 33 years the FDA dodged properly classifying dental mercury amalgam as it was grandfathered in without proof of safety. In 2007 the FDA lost a lawsuit which forced them to classify dental amalgam. Unfortunately the FDA chose not to perform even the preliminary requirements of classification such as an environmental assessment. The final rule of the FDA classification was a huge disappointment as it declared mercury amalgam to be safe for anyone and everyone, without regard to age, reproductive status, or any of the known factors that make a person unusually susceptible to the effects of mercury exposure.
Although the FDA ruling purported to be a ‘risk assessment’, the document was nothing of the sort as it did not comply with the standards of practice endorsed and espoused by the professional risk assessment community.
The International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT), a scientific organization made up ofdental, medical and research professionals submitted a petition for reconsideration to the FDA in September of 2009. This petition pointed out the inaccuracies, inconsistencies and flawed science the FDA relied upon, and urged them to reconsider their ruling. The FDA held a new dental products panel meeting in December 2010, specifically to further investigate and re-evaluate the issues brought up in the petition for reconsideration.
