In episode 57 of MicrobeWorld Video, filmed at the American Association for the Advancement of Science Meeting in Vancouver, BC Canada on February 18, 2012, Dr. Stan Maloy talks with Ron Atlas Ph.D., Chair of ASM's Biodefense Committee and Professor of Biology, University of Louisville.
Stan and Ron discuss the recent recommendation by the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity (NSABB) to withhold some of the key data regarding transmissibility from recent research on the H5N1 virus.
Ron explains how the NSABB was created and the role they play together with the American Society for Microbiology in attempting to establish a set of guidelines used to safeguard the scientific knowledge base from being misused.
Ron discusses the need for this research to emerge from it's current moratorium and continue in order to remain a step ahead of the virus in an attempt to be alerted to possible future pandemics. In episode 57 of MicrobeWorld Video, filmed at the American Association for the... more

There are thousands of print and online literary magazines, and identifying the best places to submit can be a daunting task. Not only that, writers at various points of development might be interested in writing programs, contests, conferences, communities, etc. Again, connecting the dots can be tough.
So S&R has now pulled together a suite of resources aimed at helping creative writers find the resources they need to hone their craft and reach an audience. If you’re a writer, we invite you to explore the Online Literary Magazines and Creative Writer Resource page, which points you to everything from comprehensive lists of print and electronic publications to advice on deciding where to submit to tools that greatly simplify the process of submitting and tracking submissions. There are thousands of print and online literary magazines, and identifying the best... more

Recently I photographed a custom made cabinet for Frank Cooper, a local artisan working in wooden furnishings for the home. He entered his cabinet into the California Home + Design “Hit List” competition and out of approximately 1600 entries Frank was chosen as one of the top ten by readers.

Bay Area Spaces Magazine has published yet another of my clients projects. Miller Design Company commissioned me to photograph the San Francisco townhouse of Bob Miller, owner of Miller Design Company.
It is a great honor to have a client ask you to photograph their own spaces and even more so to photograph their home. These are the projects where the designer had a free hand and could express themselves with a devotion to their artistic vision that simply isn’t possible when working on a paid commission.Bay Area Spaces Magazine has published yet another of my clients projects. Writing is one of the toughest crafts in the world. Everyone is a critic and your work is always subject to editorial changes and incorrect analysis. An author puts their heart and soul into a piece of work. But what do you do when an Editor tells you that you’ve put TOO much effort into something? That you tried TOO hard? In this piece a magazine writer submits a piece to an Editor and the feedback she gets is that her work is too good for the publication and she has to dumb it down. Gutted, the writer feels like she can’ win or get a break in this town because she’s been trying to get work forever!
Really tongue and cheek piece about the trials and tribulations about being a writer and working with an Editor. Humorous, truthful and well-written. Blogger has an amazingly eclectic site with everything from beauty, fashion, diary style entries, poetry, life in the magazine world----this girl has everything. Already winner of the prestigious “Blog Of The Day Award” (some people take years to earn this—she’s only had her blog up 3 weeks!) and on top level blog rolls of awesome bloggers, this girl is amazing. A+++++Writing is one of the toughest crafts in the world. Everyone is a critic and your... more
