Horses Abandoned in Arizona Are Latest Toll of Mexican Drug Trade
The New York Times

Abandoned Horses Are Latest Toll of Drug Trade
By MARC LACEY
PHOENIX — Found tottering alone in the desert with their ribs visible and their heads hung low, horses play a backbreaking, unappreciated role in the multibillion-dollar drug smuggling industry.
Mexican traffickers strap heavy bales of marijuana or other illegal drugs to the horses’ backs and march them north through mountain passes and across rough desert terrain. With little food and water, some collapse under their heavy loads. Others are turned loose when the contraband gets far enough into Arizona to be loaded into vehicles with more horsepower.
“We would pick up 15 to 20 horses a month, and many more of the animals would get past us,” said Brad Cowan, who spent 28 years as a livestock officer for the Arizona Department of Agriculture before retiring a few months back. “They wear poorly fitted equipment. It’s obvious they were not well taken care of. The makeshift saddles rub big sores in their backs.”
Even once rescued, the horses face an uncertain future. Since they are not from the United States, the state of Arizona must draw their blood and conduct a battery of tests to ensure that they do not carry any disease that would infect domestic livestock. Then the horses head to auction, where some are bought and shipped back to Mexico for slaughter.
Others are luckier. They find their way to equine rescue operations, which help place them with homes.
“We just got a horse in, and he’s sticks and bones, and his feet are horrific,” said July Glore, president of Heart of Tucson, a rescue operation that nurses the horses back to strength. “We get calls all the time about abandoned horses. How many do I have right now? One, two, three.”
One, named Lucky, had his tongue almost cut in half from the sharp wire bit put in his mouth. “I was told he was a drug horse,” Ms. Glore said.
Farther north, at the Arizona Equine Rescue Organization in New River, Soleil K. Dolce said drug horses were just part of the problem. Ms. Dolce responds to police calls about horses that have escaped from illegal rodeos and are running down the street. Horses are also left at freeway off-ramps or tied to fences by owners who no longer want them, she said.
Rehabilitating them is expensive and time consuming, Ms. Dolce said, and there is the possibility that some horses will never be adopted.
“I can’t even describe the suffering these horses have gone through,” Ms. Dolce said, petting Rim Rock, who was abandoned in Tonto National Forest, east of Phoenix, several years ago and still suffers problems in his hooves.
It is sometimes not clear when a horse is discovered exactly how it came to be abandoned. State officials say the economic crisis has led to many more animals being let loose by owners no longer able to care for them. But the horses that are found with Mexican brands are presumed to be smuggling horses. And sometimes the authorities have no doubt: groups of horses or donkeys are discovered in the act, with bales of drugs on their backs and their human guides hiding.
Last year, seven horses laden with 971 pounds of marijuana were discovered by Border Patrol agents in the Patagonia Mountains in southern Arizona. The human smugglers had fled.
“I’d get angry when I’d see the condition these horses were in,” Mr. Cowan said. “The smugglers would buy them or steal them on the Mexican side and then work them almost to death. They have horrible sores that can take months to heal up.”
He recalled one horse he came across in Pima County, not far from the Mexican border, that had deep wounds in its hide, was clearly malnourished and was so weak that it was trying to sit back on its hind end to take the weight off its legs. Mr. Cowan and a co-worker had to carry the horse into a trailer.
Still, he said, horses are resilient. “They can come back from a lot,” he said.
Some of the abused horses end up back in the rugged border region where they were first found, Mr. Cowan said. Instead of smuggling, though, they are sometimes used by law enforcement agencies to pursue the traffickers who mistreated them. The New York Times December 30, 2010 Abandoned Horses Are Latest Toll of Drug... more-

LOS ANGELES CALIFORNIA ROUGH STOCK VS LA RANGE RIDERS -
Xcorps Action Sports TV #48.) ROAD TOUR seg.5 HD
Xcorps Action Sports TV #48.) ROAD TOUR seg.5 HD - Rolling into a new TV season team X launches a fresh wave of assaults upon the lame and mundane by shooting a massive coast to coast Road-Tour stretching from Boston to San Diego!
The show opens up with host Jason Lazo standing in the New Jersey surf after flying in from San Diego California to visit RIVE- the source of many of the music videos that appear on the show. Jason hangs at a local skate park in Long Branch N.J. and talks with RIVE owner John Warden and producer Nick Paolise who talk about what exactly RIVE does for musicians and bands.
After that the pedal hits the metal with Jason jumping on U.S. interstate 80 west. Nice high speed road shots here rolling to a brand new video from an alt pop band from Denmark-The Asteroids Galaxy- Tour presented by Girly Action.
Pretty fun way to roll the highway with this band in the stereo!
Jason pushes the car all night stopping at 6:30 am on the banks of the mighty Mississippi River between Illinois and Iowa for a report to the camera. After another fill-up the miles keep rolling by cut to a video from keyboard talent Aaron Barnhart doing his song Day in Day Out. Lots of farm scenes here of mid America looking summer green and then onward to the Wyoming border!
Jason exits on the next segment for a little break on his trans-continental drive at the highest point on U.S.80- also known as the Lincoln Highway-Americas first cross country highway. The air is a bit thin here at 8,640 feet. A freaky animated video from the band A Lull doing their song Skinny Fingers rolls with big sky scenes here of the Wyoming landscape.
Jason talks about the journey as the miles roll on then decides to exit the big road to head south on U.S. highway 530 for a closer look at the super scenic Flaming Gorge National Park. Great shots here and what kind of animal was that? It seems like the Xcorps host-reporter was the only one on the road following the Green river and finding a camping spot near the town of Red Canyon. Check out what he does NOT have for dinner!
Segment 5 of this cross country journey opens up the next morning with more rainbow colored mountains and close ups of wildlife with Jason throwing out some geological thoughts. Etheral tunes by David Huber backs his informative rap.
The show closes out with scenes from part-2 of the Xcorps ROAD TOUR show where the action really starts rolling in Idaho with mountain biking and hot air ballooning at the Grand Targhee resort, BASE jumping off the Perrine bridge and jet-boating the Snake river through Hells Canyon. As they say in these parts-this aint no show for lilies!

Xcorps Action Sports TV #45.) SKATEPIPE seg.5 HD
Xcorps Action Sports Show #45.)"SKATEPIPE"-seg5-HD- The Xcorps guerilla TV crew rolled into the southern California town of Upland to shoot pool skate legend Steve Alba AKA Salba carving the Badlands Pipeline skate park- home and roots to some of the best Vert skaters on the planet!
The show opens with on camera host Jason Lazo dwarfed by the 20-foot tall Pipe-part of 10,000 sq. foot Skate Park in Upland opened to the public in 2002 designed by Steve Alba and California Skate parks Purkiss Rose. Nice action shots here of Steve Alba flying on his board along with other locals catching massive air off the 360-degree concrete tube backed here by tunes and video from the band CLUTCH presented by RIVE.
After the break its back to the action at one of the wildest skate zones we have shot! The Upland park is a holy zone modeled after the original Upland skate park of the 1970s originating with the Baldy Flood Control Pipe. X cams roll the action of bank/vert skating starting with a mini-ramp take off ledge rolling into a phat metal coped half-pipe leading into a 20 foot full-pipe and ending in a deep swimming pool size vert bowl. See SALBA Rip and Tear here pumped by music and scenes from LA punk band The BRIGGS.
Segment three returns to the speed zone where skate wheels sing and bone-crunching freefalls are part of the ride! Great action here cut to SALBA jamming with his band POWERFLEX 5 at a local club. Xcorps host Jason Lazo talks with Steve Alba who lives in Upland about the killer park. Check out his 8-ply gnarler board and hear what he says about the PIPELINE! http://www.salbaland.com/
Xcams roll on local hotness Michelle Riddle hurling the pipe course! She was the only chick riding the monster! Jason talks to her about how long it took her get to her skate level. SEN DOG does the tunes.
After that a special RETRO X piece with skate shots never before televised- 16mm B&W film shot at a Pocatello Idaho Skatepark in 1979. Rare! Check the gear! Theatrically twisted MUSHROOM HEAD video adds special spice to the action.
This SK8 show closes with host Bob Woodard reporting on a cool new skate product the PHOTON LIGHTBOARD. Check out these sick decks imbedded with 55 LED lights at a local San Diego park! Nice light trails man!!! SubnoiZe band DI does Skate or Die.

Xcorps Action Sports TV #45.) SKATEPIPE seg.1 HD
Xcorps Action Sports Show #45.)"SKATEPIPE"-seg1-HD- The Xcorps HD shoot crew led by on host Jason Lazo rolled into the small southern California town of Upland to meet pool skate legend Steve Alba AKA Salba at the Pipeline skate park- home and roots to some of the best Vert skaters on the planet- for the next episode of Xcorps to be called SKATEPIPE.
This next XC show will feature Steve Alba ripping the Upland Pipe on his board along with many other talented locals catching massive air off the 20-foot tall 360-degree concrete tube. The Pipe is part of 10,000 sq. foot Skate Park, which opened to the public in 2002 and was designed by Steve Alba and California Skate parks Purkiss Rose.
One of the coolest skate zones we have shot, the Upland park is a holy zone modeled after the original Upland skate park of the 1970s-which was modeled after the original Baldy Flood Control Pipe- and contains all aspects of bank/vert skating starting with a mini-ramp take off ledge rolling into a phat metal coped half-pipe leading into a 20 foot full-pipe and ending in a deep swimming pool size vert bowl. YiKes!
Its a smooth fast speed zone and its not for beginners! Skate wheels sing there like banshee devil dogs and bone crunching freefalls happen easy! Xcorps cams captured some great action including shots from a POV cam attached to Salbas helmet. The Xcorps shoot crew-included network Emmy winner Dave Alvarez and producer Sundarajan also snagging HD shot action.
Xcorps host Jason Lazo talked with Steve Alba who lives in Upland about the killer park he helped design and his past and present career in the world of skateboarding. Jason also spoke to other skaters including a hot chick looping the tube and some ripper groms going full overhead! What will they morph into!??
Also in this episode is cool video footage of Steve Alba jamming with his band in a local So Cal club. Nice custom soundtrack to the action from Steve. Great new music videos from RIVE promotions and Suburban Noize Records rolls the action in this special Xcorps show.
Rounding out the shots in this episode will be some never before televised 16mm B&W film footage shot at a Pocatello Idaho Skatepark in 1980 by XC producer Stu Edmondson. Who knew they were skating in Idaho back then never mind a skate park!
Check out the following links for more on Steve Alba and the Upland Pipeline Skate Park. This show to be released in appr.4 weeks. Classic Xcorps!

Xcorps Action Sports TV #44.) PADDLE BOARD seg.3 HD
#44.)"PADDLEBOARD"-seg.3 HD- This special BIG X WAVE episode tidal waves the screen with host Jason Lazo in Hawaii hanging with tow in surf hombres Garrett McNamara and Kealii Mamala ripping big waves off Hawaii and Tahiti along with a look at the sport of open ocean paddle boarding in California featuring the 32 mile Catalina Classic.
Jason opens the show from scenic Cardiff Reef California where a group of local watermen are on the beach talking about their recent ocean race paddling from the island of Catalina to the So California coastal town of Manhattan Beach a distance of 32 miles! Jason talks to top seated arm paddlers Tim Fischer, Brian Szymanski and George Plsek about the endurance ocean journey which began back in 1928 with Tom Blake taking just under 6 hours to make the arm paddle trip.
Check out the cool scenes with heli shots over the exotic Mediterranean looking village of Avalon on Catalina Island where the paddle race began. Great POV Xcam shots here putting the viewer on board with the athletes. Eddy Grants song The Struggle fits the action in this tough arm-burning historic race. Check the pod of Pilot Whales rolling the coarse!
After the break Jason and the X crew head to the North Shore of Hawaii to meet with big wave tow-in surfers Garrett McNamara and Kealii Mamala for a look at a niche end of surfing bringing on the biggest adrenalized rush! The boys from team Hawthorne are rolling their jetski and go big phat and fast for the Xcorps cameras! See them tow in to ride monster walls off the North shore at a break called Log Cabins, off Maui with the freight trains at Jaws and in Tahiti jamming the infamous teal tubes of Teahoopu.
The next segment tows in with more massive surf shots and roaring waves cut with Japanese indie band legends BORIS winding up their strings with their new video Statement riding alongside the action. Only on Xcorps! Jason talks with board masters Garrett and Kealii about the sport and recent overhead conquests. Garrett raps about how it feels to be just in front of rolling tons of water and what viewers could do to get that feeling! Kealii talks about his recent trip to California to test ride Mavericks. See the details on the guys who ride and the state of the boards now used to roll these mega waves. Insane shots as usual including the wild tow rope cam and sweet sea turtle footage under the waves! SubNoiZe band Dirtball feeds the need here with their song Im Not. Not a band to back down and we appreciate it here on Xcorps where we let the music roll with the action!
Jason opens the last segment from the Cardiff Reef beach with paddlboarder and local PIPES surf cafe chain owner Tim Fischer talking about how he felt at the start and end of a 32 mile open ocean paddle. Always the comedy on Xcorps!
The show wraps back at North Show Hawaii with the big wave legends and a promise of more action and music next week on Xcorps.
Additional music from David Huber and Mower. Thanks to Hawaiimana Nutrition and Hawaii Action Sports for some of the big wave shots in this show. Aloha and mahalo!
