Democracy Picnic On Hampstead Heath
15 August 2009
London UK
Well the call went out and a grand day's picnicing was had.
This was an opportunity for people from all backgrounds and beliefs to come together and share what to them Democracy really stands for.
Conspicuous by its absence, democratic consensus has been sorely lacking from Governmental movement of late - but then what is democracy exactly - idealism, invisible policy, obscure philosophy, or a real form of collective social engineering?
This is one in a series of picnics and gatherings.
The next North London event is to be hosted at Alexandra Palace, Sunday 27th September
For more details & inspiration to create your own event: see
www.peopleincommon.org
A welcome addition to the day came about in the form of a handful of wandering bards, journeymen and musicians who happened upon the modest political gathering.
Remember before our beloved internet, before tv, before the radio, way back beyond the time of papers and written word, this country was indeed home to a very strong oral tradition of information and story sharing we know today as news (or olds, as is generally the case).
And whatever Democracy may be, it is certainly not all found in the censored, limited and completely biased version of reality as filtered down through modern mediocrity of media - where
stories are laughably sliced into palatable bites by mainstream thinking and the lowest common denominator rules supreme.
Get out there, listen to real stories from real people and turn off the telly.
Big brother really doesn't give a flying fancy weather you're watching or not - but your voices can make all the difference in the world -so use them wisely!

PEOPLE'S PICNIC @ PARLIAMENT HILL -15TH AUGUST 2009
filmed:London 20.07.09
Mark Barrett, media tart for Climate Camp and dedicated human rights campaigner, chats about what we can do to reclaim & revive our democratic inheritance of hard won freedom.
A charter of rights passed down to us from an incredibly dedicated British peoples.
However flawed our current system of government may be, it is only by taking action and responsibility ourselves that we have any chance of strengthening our political knowledge and reform hope of leaving an honest nation for generations to come.
2009 and everyday human rights are slipping through our fingers like credibilty from a bankers portfolio - We don't all need to get on the streets & get angry about it, but we absolutely do need to be pro-active.
This is an invitation to all who have something to say about the country they live in to join the debate, come along to a picnic, or create an event yourself & self-organize your own locality.
If we allow others to make all the rules, we certainly have no right to moan when we cannot win the game.
