Sony proves that optical storage media is still far from retirement. Although Blu-ray is difficult to penetrate markets dominated by the DVD format, according to the Examiner reports, Sony is now working on next-generation optical media. In collaboration with researchers from Tohoku University, Japan, Sony has developed a blue violet laser ultra fast semiconductor which allows for 1 terabyte of data, equivalent to 1000 Gigabyte stored on optical media piece. As an illustration, a single chip data disc is able to accommodate as many as 106 pieces of dual layer DVD. Optical technology that uses blue violet laser can generate new types of pulses or shots within a matter of pico seconds or equal to one per one trillion seconds. In addition, laser semiconductor and optical amplifiers semiconductor also allow new power up to 100 watts output. A hundred times more compared with conventional semiconductor laser shots. For information, April and Blu-ray Disc Association announced improvements in technology formats including Blu-ray disc capable of storing up to 128GB. However, less than a month later, researchers from the University of Tokyo claim to have found a new cheap and easy material to manufacture which is capable for storing up to 25TB in a piece of the disc.http://wikiwig.com/2010/08/sony-develops-a-terabyte-in-a-disc/
