Staples and SunEdison...unveil the largest single rooftop solar power installation in Maryland at Staples' 200,200 square foot fulfillment center in Hanover. The 1.01 megawatt solar installation covers nearly 175,000 square feet of roof space, larger than three football fields.
The environmental savings associated with the system will offset more than 43 million pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) over 20 years, equivalent to removing CO2 produced by more than 4,200 automobiles driving 12,000 miles per year. The zero-emission, silent photovoltaic system will generate approximately 1.2 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity per year, and 21 million kWh during the initial 20 years of the project.

Wal-Mart Stores confirmed on Tuesday some of the deals it will be pushing to draw crowds for the day after Thanksgiving. It also announced weekly savings starting this Saturday on popular toys and video games that it’s pitching as comparable to the Black Friday sales blitz.

Walmart’s Black Friday specials include 50-inch Sanyo plasma HDTVs for $598, Magnavox Blu-Ray disc players for $78, TomTom GPS systems for $59, $7 reversible fleece jackets and $3 children’s sleepwear, according to Melissa O’Brien,a Wal-Mart spokeswoman.

Some of the toys at Walmart stores that will be discounted starting this Saturday through Nov. 27 are EZ Bake Oven, Disney Princess Scooter and Nerf N-Strike Vulcan. The discounts are up to 60 percent. Starting this Saturday, customers purchasing certain gaming packages such as “Band Hero” and “DJ Hero” will receive a $40 Walmart gift card while supplies last.

Office supply chain Staples Inc. said that it will be selling HP laptops with an Intel Celeron processor for $299.98, slashed from $599.98; and Garmin Nuvi GPS systems for $119.99, reduced from $219.99. For the first time, Staples will be offering the same Black Friday deals online from 6-10 a.m. that shoppers can buy at the store.

Wal-Mart and other retailers including Sears and Toys R Us have started to hawk deep sales usually reserved for the big sales day known as “Black Friday” in hopes of attracting more shoppers early. While Black Friday has faded a bit in importance, it’s considered a key barometer of shoppers’ willingness to spend for the holiday period. The traditional shopping spree is dubbed Black Friday because it traditionally was considered the day when a surge of shoppers helped stores break into profitability for the full year.

Staples announced that its store in Roslindale, Mass., is its first location to be awarded Gold certification in Leadership Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) by the U.S. Green Building Council.

The store includes 39 roof skylights that will provide natural lighting for the store and limit use of artificial lighting during the day. It also includes an energy-efficient roof that is super-insulated to reduce heat gain in the summer and heat loss in the winter, as well as construction materials that incorporate recycled content, including drywall, concrete and carpet.

The Roslindale Staples uses approximately 34% less energy than a standard store. It is currently testing an Isuzu Hybrid truck for deliveries around Boston, and limits the speed on all delivery trucks to 60 miles per hour, improving fuel economy by 23% and lowering emissions.

Every Monday is the “Wish List,” a blog entry dedicated to one online shopping site where a dream outfit is compiled editorial style from the site. The blogger is a magazine editor so the page is like her dream editorial spread as if she had complete creative rights without any Editor cutting her off! She gives you a great history about the brand, a little story about the look she compiled and then picks the outfit based on the theme of the spread adding captions explaining each item she’s chosen. Really fun and unique. This week it’s the cutting edge label MARNI and she has chosen a to die for duster jacket that is a unique take on the trench (it almost looks hand painted), killer heels, 1950’s lingerie, and much, much more!
