Artists Mike Bancroft and Evan Plummer of Garage Spaces will contribute to Mischief Night at the Hyde Park Art Center with the foamy wargames of Sh**, Shower, Shave.
As Hyde Park Art Center opens its doors to artful play on the idea of pranks and mischief common to Halloween celebrations, Garage Spaces’ Sh**, Shower, Shave will unleash a 60 ft long soft sculpture tunnel in which visitors can engage in shaving cream combat. Visitors will purchase a kit of HAZMAT protective suits, shaving cream, matches, and safety pins with which to set the inflatable afoam in fits of mischief. Garage Spaces continues to be thankful for the support given by the Welle Endowment.

The Pinata Factory installed a number of "Altarventions" through out the wealthy northern suburbs of Chicago. The Altars were created by over 50 Chicago youth from Humboldt Park and South Chicago neighborhoods that have been plagued by one of the most violent years recorded. These paper mache installations aim to remind people who are not faced with the reality of the violence in Chicago everyday, that the need to address this epidemic has never been more pressing. photos here http://picasaweb.google.com/manilikecheese/Altarations#5418292861293732066The Pinata Factory installed a number of "Altarventions" through out the... more

Chicago artists released hundreds of paper mache piñatas stuffed with space blanket made at 3 temporary factories. The factory aims to draw attention to the issue of homelessness and the spaces (in this case highway underpasses) that used to act as shelter before they were fenced off/in.
The piñatas are the output but are far less important than the community and awareness brought about by the process of manufacturing. Over 100 Chicago area youth, more than 40 community members, and volunteers helped to create, install, and document this project. Here are some pictures gathered throughout the 2 years the factory was in "business" http://picasaweb.google.com/manilikecheese/PinataFactoryChicago artists released hundreds of paper mache piñatas stuffed with space... more

Can't afford a Shepard Fairey print in these hard times? If you really want an investment tip, buy signed pictures of Mike Bancroft in front of Shepard Fairey's art work outside of the ICA in Boston August 14-16. All proceeds will be invested into more prints of Mr. Bancroft in front of Mr. Fairey's art work and any additional profits donated to youth arts education. Here is a segment of an interview Jason Foumberg did with Mr. Bancroft in New City.
"Mike believes that the recent fight over copyright and fair use, as embodied by the Shepherd Fairey versus the Associated Press legal battle, is important, but misunderstood by Fairey himself. As an artist who appropriates images, Fairey has gone on to sue other artists who borrow his own trademarks, notably Obey. As a parody, Mike will set up a lemonade stand outside Fairey’s museum retrospective in Boston, and sell touristy photographs of himself posing with Fairey’s art, as a way to sell Fairey’s art itself. Mike expects that police will get involved, but for him, it’s just a way to uphold his view that we’ve got to open ourselves up to get things done. "
