"In 2009, President Barack Obama reportedly called members of the Tea Party "teabaggers." It turns out that our fourth greatest president, first in so many things, may have been the first "teabagger" himself, as seen in the 1997 photograph above. Yes, that really is Barack Obama wearing a regimental coat and carrying a tricorn hat in his hand. And that flag behind him really is a Gadsden flag, with its serpent and its "Don't Tread On Me" slogan.
In 1997, Obama was beginning his first term as a state senator in Illinois. He and his fellow politicians were asked to lead the "4th on 53rd" parade, which is Hyde Park's 4th of July celebration--one not too different from many other places in America, it turns out. All the politicians who attended were expected to dress the part. The Herald even published a story the week before, on July 2nd, confirming in advance that Obama would be "wearing colonial attire."
The NAACP still saw the costumes as part of a disturbing, nationalist impulse:

Facebook faux pas: California libertarian and Tea Party darling Jules Manson is caught calling for the assassination of President Barack Obama and his children.
On Sunday, many Facebook users were greeted by the shocking spectacle of a California libertarian and Ron Paul supporter by the name of Jules Manson advocating for the assassination of President Barack Obama. Manson, a failed politician, recently ran for and lost a seat on the City of Carson’s City Council last March.
The following is the text of Manson’s racist, treasonous, deplorable post:
“Assassinate the fucken nigger and his monkey children”
Manson posted the disturbing and openly racist call to assassinate Obama and Obama’s children on his own Facebook wall, which was open to the public. Manson, a Ron Paul libertarian, was angry with Obama over a policy matter.
Manson removed the obnoxious post, but numerous Facebook users, outraged by the despicable threat, captured an image of the threat before Manson had the good sense to take it down.
Two hours after making the offensive post, and after being bombarded by hundreds of Facebook users outraged by his racist call to assassinate the leader of the free world, Manson made a bizarre Facebook post, presumably in the hopes of justifying his unjustifiable rant. There Mason argued that using the word “nigger” does not make him a racist. However, most reasonable people would disagree with Manson’s assertion.
One Facebook page, Americans Against the Tea Party, posted a screen capture of the offensive remarks and recived over a 100 angry and outraged comments in a little over an hour. The following is a small sample of those remarks:

I'd like to see how Fox News will defend THIS!
I hope the FBI has seen what he has said and will be showing up at his door soon.
The best way to stick it to idiots like this is vote to re elect Obama and then Warren in 2016.

There is something else that goes unrecognized. Few Americans are willing to acknowledge that Occupy Wall Street and the tea party movement are two manifestations of the same explosive American anger at the American government and the modern corporate system.
Both movements blame “the bankers” for what has happened. Both also blame “the politicians in Washington.” They just blame different politicians. The tea party people identify the enemy as liberals, Democrats, mainstream journalists, people who live in Washington, New York and Los Angeles, and are in one way or another in league with banking, international finance and cosmopolitan society.
The OWS people hate “the bankers” whom they identify with greed, financial manipulation (often crooked) and the oppression of the rest of their countrymen. They see their enemies as rightists: the tea party, fundamentalist Protestants, cultural conservatives, Republicans, warmongers, and self-righteous and xenophobic patriots. These days, a lot of them have saved some hate, or grief, for Barack Obama, who, they believe, has betrayed them.
Both sides are obsessed with the other and cannot recognize what they have in common, which is victimization by a finance- and corporate-dominated American business establishment in effective control of the United States government, whose elected officials now are themselves victims of a system of campaign contributions, upon which their careers depend. They have only themselves to blame—politicians of both parties, and their Supreme Court—having deliberately removed all regulation or limit from what is now a fundamentally corrupt electoral finance system.There is something else that goes unrecognized.
