Swaziland, Africa - In July 2009, envisionGood.tv traveled with Jennifer Sly, founder of YouthAssets, an international nonprofit organization that empowers orphans and "youth head of households" in southern Africa.
Enroute to a homestead of one of YouthAssets' "youth advisors", Jennifer explained the important role that mobile phones play to make connecting with rural youth more efficient. Jennifer also tells us how rural youth exchanged mobile airtime using cellular network MTN's "Me2U" service. Youth sold airtime to get money needed for bus fare to attend BarCampSwaziland, a local technology conference.

Swaziland, Africa, July 2009: During a quick break in between sessions at BarCampSwaziland, Gcina of YouthAssets explains that mobile phones are more widely used in Swaziland, Africa than computers, as a source of information and connecting with friends. Gcina also tells us about MXIT, the dominant mobile social networking platform in southern africa, with over 9 million users and growing. Gcina uses a Nokia 6300 to catch up with friends on Facebook.

Swaziland, Africa - July 2009: Jennifer Sly, Founder of YouthAssets, brought us with her to a number of local homesteads in Swaziland this week. Along the way, Jennifer told us about how she used Google's G1 phone & Google GPS Maps to find a remote homestead of a 12 year old boy she met over 14 months beforehand in rural Swaziland, Africa. Jennifer points out the importance of GPS maps in Africa, noting that in most locations people do not have street addresses.
