"WKRO-AM's Howie Carr spoke with Twyla Barnes, a Cherokee genealogist who runs a blog dedicated to Cherokee affairs and who has researched Elizabeth Warren's genealogy and has found absolutely no evidence of any Indian heritage. She said Elizabeth needs to apologize to the Cherokees, to all Native Americans and to the voters for purportrating a fraud.
In her blog Twyla Barnes reached out to Elizabeth Warren and said "It seems you would like the “attacks” against your claims of Cherokee ancestry to stop so I thought I would offer some advice on how to make it stop. Tell the truth…. ""WKRO-AM's Howie Carr spoke with Twyla Barnes, a Cherokee genealogist who... more

"Desperately scrambling to validate Democrat Elizabeth Warren’s Native American heritage amid questions about whether she used her minority status to further her career, the Harvard Law professor’s campaign last night finally came up with what they claim is a Cherokee connection — her great-great-great-grandmother.
“She would be 1⁄32nd of Elizabeth Warren’s total ancestry,” noted genealogist Christopher Child said, referring to the candidate’s great-great-great-grandmother, O.C. Sarah Smith, who is listed on an Oklahoma marriage certificate as Cherokee. Smith is an ancestor on Warren’s mother’s side, Child said.
The missing link comes after Warren’s embattled campaign faced sharp questions about her Native American background in the wake of Herald stories that showed both Harvard Law School and Warren herself had touted her tribal lineage and claimed she was a member of a minority for years.
Warren’s shaken campaign faced another crisis yesterday when it was revealed that beginning in 1986 and continuing through 1995, Warren had listed herself as a minority professor in the Association of American Law Schools desk book, a directory of law professors from participating schools."

Georgia Pacific is claiming that their cups are compostable.
(see pic or GP product webpage here - http://productcatalog.gp.com/Product.aspx?Pid=5662&Cat=9351&View=1)
We know this is false for two reasons:
1) The cups are not certified by the BPI (the leading certifier of compostable packaging) nor is there any evidence that the cups meet the national standards for compostability, ASTM D6400 & D6868, and
2) The cups are also lined with a plastic polymer, polyethylene (PE), and in a recent study commissioned by the Sustainable Packaging Coalition it was found that only 8.3% of commericial composting facilities that accept food packaging accept paper cups lined with polyethylene (vs. 80% acceptance for paper cups lined with a bio-plastic like poly-lactic acid).
These products are green washing and this type of false advertising is hurting consumers & contaminating compost facilities.

Fox News ended up having to issue an "online correction of the false claims the outlet had been making while waging a high-profile assault on Kevin Jennings," the Department of Education official currently being targeted by the right wing. The specific claim involved an accusation that Jennings had covered up "statutory rape," based on an incident when Jennings was a teacher, when a "teenager confided in him about having sex with a stranger and Jennings didn't report it to authorities." Media Matters ended up proving there was no basis to the claim. Via The Plum Line:
"On Friday Media Matters produced what it said was the kid's drivers license, showing that the kid was 16, legal age of consent in Massachuttes, and also produced a Facebook exchange that seemed to show that a Fox News reporter had been informed directly by the kid himself that they'd misrepresented his age."
An interesting sidenote, picked up by eagle-eyed tipster John Glasstetter: Fox News was supportive of Jennings before they started trumping up crimes to pin on him! Here's video from a year ago, where Fox's Bill O'Reilly praises pop star Hilary Duff for participating in an anti-homophobia campaign (video @ link). That PSA was commissioned by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), which Jennings founded.Fox News ended up having to issue an "online correction of the false claims the... more
