For those of you who shop online, you might be interested to know that there is a cheaper and more fun way of buying the things you only wish you had the money to buy. Here's your chance. Penny auctions are the new way to buy brand new products at 50% off as well as all the way up to 95%. Sound too good to be true?
Honestly, I thought it to be just another scam until I started to do the research. Penny auctions work through a few simple principles:
For those who may be unfamiliar with auctions, the way it works is after finding the item you wish to purchase, you and others will take turns bidding. The difference between normal in-person auctions and penny auctions, such as CheapOh.net, is that bids are sold for $0.50 a bid in bid packs that are sold from 10 bids for 5$ to 1000 bids for $500.
After your bids are credited to your account you will use these bids to bid on an auction. (They work as credits). Once the item is put up for auction, the bidding price starts at $0.00. When you use a bid on an auction this will drive the price of the auction up by $0.01 and increase the countdown timer by 10 seconds. The person with the last/highest bid on the auction when the countdown timer gets to 0 wins the auction. Once the auction is won, the winner will pay what the final price of the auction. (Usually save between 50-95% off MSRP).
CheapOh! is an upcoming site with a lot of promise. They officially started Beta testing today by auctioning off 3 Visa gift cards of different values. In the future, items sold will range from Products from Apple, Microsoft, Nikon, Sony, ect. Registration is open for users to buy bids now so that when these products are available, users can jump right in with bidding.
Other promising news with CheapOh! is that on the 15th of every month CheapOh! will donate all profits made off of every auction won on that day to the Red Cross.
So check it out, at CheapOh.net

I doubt that words can do justice to the unbridled fulfillment a man receives when standing next to a bacon lamp birthed from his own brilliance.
Flickr user kmkelley617's bacon lamp is real and it's (mostly) edible. The shade is made out of 99% handwoven bacon which was then baked as a mold in the oven, probably so kmkelley617 wouldn't find himself violently ill should he get mouthy in the middle of a spontaneous-yet-inevitable man-on-lamp lovemaking session.
The only room we see for improvement is to replace that lightbulb with something of a higher wattage so the lamp becomes a dual bacon idol/bacon cooker, rather than solely the former.

Just like your old car, your old appliance is worth an additional bonus check from the government if you relinquish it during the cash for appliance bonanza!
There will be anywhere from 50 up to 200 dollars given to you for your old appliance when you purchase a new one that has the EPA’s issued Energy Star sticker. The sticker was developed by the EPA to indicate an appliance has met the new standards for energy savings. Which means savings for you as well in your home energy bill. In addition to saving us all money, global warming caused by emissions from less efficient appliances is hoped to be greatly reduced. The larger the scale of participants, yes, this means you, the greater the benefit to the earth.
If you’re confident in your old appliance, and aren’t sure you need a new appliance, one thing to consider is that if that appliance is fifteen years old or older the EPA recommends replacing it. Other tips for getting more savings and less impact on the environment out of an appliance include choosing a refrigerator with a top freezer instead of the side by side model. Also, choosing a washing machine that is front loading, versus top loading, is found to be more energy efficient as well.
Each state is allocated funds and has up to February 17, 2012 to apply the incentive. Check out your state and local government web-sites for when the rebate will be in effect for your state. Your local appliance dealer should have this information as well. It is still not indicated whether or not rebates can be applied retroactively, so stay on the look out and you might end up with extra Holiday spending money.
