September 21st will mark the International Day of Peace - an opportunity for individuals, organisations and nations to create practical acts of peace.
Since its inception in 1982, Peace Day has marked our personal and planetary progress toward peace. Millions of people from around the world take part, organising a variety of events to celebrate this day.
“Anyone, anywhere can celebrate Peace Day,” say the UN. “It can be as simple as lighting a candle at noon, or just sitting in silent meditation. Or it can involve getting your co-workers, organization, community or government engaged in a large event. The impact if millions of people in all parts of the world, coming together for one day of peace, is immense.”
In Finland, the day will be marked with special tree planting ceremonies, while people everywhere are encouraged to spend one minute in silence for peace in Afghanistan. Celebrations will be held in Nairobi, Kenya with poems, songs, dance and drama, and a two-day Interfaith Peace Conference with Jewish, Muslim and Christian leaders is planned in North Carolina. Participation is open to all who ‘thirst after unity and hunger for peace.’
At 12 noon this Peace Day, all radio stations throughout the Caribbean will be asked to play the same original song advocating peace. The hope is that the unity and strength created through community listening will act as a catalyst to cultivate peace in the region. Everyone is invited to send in letters and stories about peace, which will be compiled into a book and sold to further the cause.
In its fourth year, the Youth Peace Parliament in Australia, have invited 89 secondary-school age young people from across Queensland, to the Parliament House to debate issues of peace in a parliamentary atmosphere. A six hour globally peace concert will be broadcasted by the Project-Peace on Earth in Bethlehem featuring Super Star musicians performing Sacred Musical Prayers.
