While some of us are mentally preparing to freeze our asses off in two weeks, South by Southwest announced their first slate (i.e. "The Big Names") for their 2010 film festival this morning. I initially had some concern about Matthew Vaughn's Kick Ass opening the fest, but that quickly led to two private smackdowns reminding me about a little indie film at the 2009 festival called Drag Me To Hell.
As long as you weren't under a rock this morning, everyone has spent their collective juices in anticipation of Matthew Vaughn's Kick Ass opening the film festival on March 12th. It is possible to bemoan this as a popularity contest entering the festival that Richard Linklater co-founded in the late eighties, but let's face it: the types of people that would do this are now in their mid-40s and producing the Kick Asses for the rest of the world.
In fact, if you take Matt Singer's point into account, Kick Ass is a true independent film. It hit Comic Con last summer with no distribution and marked the first time that the massive San Diego PR event became--in a loose sense--a marketing event.
Elektra Luxx is the sequel to Women in Trouble, which itself got relatively mediocre responses. So what's the sequel for? Well, aside from the possible claim of seeing Carla Gugino as a porn star, it's to remind us that even...no. You see, it's about...no. You know what? I have no clue why this is here aside from the fact it opened at last year's SXSW.
The entire premise of SXSW's Film Festival has straddled
something between populist, auteur and then whatever can be used to put asses in seats (I do believe showing Hubble 3D firmly slides under that last statement. And vomit onto floors once enough drunks stumble in to experience all the wonders of Real 3D nuts and bolts zooming past them.)
The other two rounding out this announcement are Aaron Katz' Cold Weather and James Franco's documentary, Saturday Night, focusing on the production behind an episode of Saturday Night Live. But let's back pedal to Katz, whose Dance Party, U.S.A. opened at SXSW 2006 and he's since been a repeat in '07 (Quiet City) to his short in '08 (Let's Get Down to Brass Tacks.)
Now let's have a more important question: ...why did I completely forget to run this until the end of the day? Good gravy.
Oh yeah. The documentary about Lemmy called Lemmy. Sure. I'll watch it. But let's go back to why I waited to write anything about this. Yes, part of it came down to my own inability to multi-task while keeping a few dozen tabs open in Firefox and watching videos of things I'd then try to edit before going back to Twitter and remembering I had a meeting that afterwards I had to walk outside to get lunch, which turned into a walk down the street that culmifnsfoifsosdf.
See? It's hard to be as overly caffeinated as I am. I guess what I'm trying to say about SXSW 2010 is I followed the rest of the film blogs up here. And now I'm excited, but more than anything, I'm a bit skeptical. SXSW is notorious for being a party festival. Of course, it'll champion Aaron Katz and the Duplass Brothers and maybe it'll even have a secret screening of Greenberg. I can't help but feel odd about it.
Oh well, maybe I'm just a cranky idiot savant online. I'll change my tune after I go there, tweet about BBQ and how mad drunk I'm getting before being put into a rush line for a screening about Lemmy. I'm feeling ambivalent about technology and such now. Consider this my Wells moment.
