CFD!'s Rob Rich takes a trip to a world of retro pixels and dungeon crawling gameplay in Atlus' 3D Dot Game Heroes:
"It’s no secret that 3D Dot Game Heroes openly apes The Legend of Zelda. I’m not going to try and refute that because it’d be just as pointless as claiming the sky is plaid. So yes, Atlus’ latest does indeed “borrow” a metric ton of ideas and systems from one of Nintendo’s greatest. They’ve copied just about everything, changed a little and in some cases missed a bit, but for all intents and purposes this game is a satirical 3D followup to one of Link’s (older) random adventures. But does that make it a fantastic celebration of all things Old-School, or just a lame knock-off with an adorable face? Well, it’s actually somewhere in the middle."

Welcome back, my friends, to the show that never ends! In this episode Rob Rich rejoins the crew and regales us with tales of new shoes. Also, this week we talk about the upcoming Lost finale in our last segment, so for many of you this will be a shorter than normal show. Or not.
There is still some vidya game talkin’, however. We delve into Indie Games (Zombie Estate and Paipa), Lost Planet 2, 3D Dot Game Heroes, Alan Wake, Red Dead Redemption (which Sage would rather go to work than play, it seems), Shadow Complex, and A Boy and His Blob.
In between various odd noises, Sage drinks much Haterade while dodging death three times and trying to sell a reluctant Rob T. on Battlestar Galactica. Rob T. also explains how he fails at Netflix and creams all over the original Metroid, while Rob R. has more Wii-woes and refuses to tell us what 5,000 polar bears having sex sounds like. Scott, meanwhile, does nothing of note. Also, Wife-arms.
Whooo boy! Yep.
Hit the jump. You know you want to.

(Soundtrack Spotlight is a weekly CFD! feature devoted to all things VGM. Every week we celebrate the best in-game music, highlight new releases and forgotten tracks, and bring you the best in auditory awesomeness.)
It’s not always easy to decide what to put into the spotlight each week; so far, I’ve been keeping the selections fairly topical.
No such qualms this week. This time, we’re taking a hard turn off of the beaten path into the harsh wastelands of the Fallout series.

Games! They are a thing which exists and this week sees more of them rolling into stores near you. “What games?”, I hear you ask. Well, how about a couple of sequels and one other that may just as well be?
Lost Planet 2 lets you return to the world of E.D.N. III and shoot more glowing monster butt, but this time with friends! Meanwhile, Skate 3 adds another entry to EA’s realistic skateboarding franchise. And then let’s not forget about 3D Dot Game Heroes, which seems like the parallel-world sequel that never came to a certain gold-cartridged 8-bit classic.
Feel free to hit the link and peruse the rest of this week’s list...

3D Dot Game Heroes Review

They say that imitation is the highest form of flattery. If that is the case, then the folks over at Nintendo should be blushing. 3D Dot Game Heroes is reminiscent of the Legend of Zelda titles, taking the classic overhead adventure game and reinventing it for the PlayStation 3. Gone is the flat and 2D realm of the 8-bit era, instead replaced by a glorious multitude of cubes and colors. They say that imitation is the highest form of flattery. Gameinformer tells a tale of a blogger who saw 3D Dot Game Heroes and had an idea. Whatever he saw reminded him of classic The Legend of Zelda games and that it was his duty to place such characters into the 3D pixeled environment.
"3D Dot Game Heroes' robust character editor allows you to put whatever you can dream up into the game. This video is a montage of my custom Link doing his thing"-gameinformer

In a society where gamers expected the latest in 3D graphics and technology, there stands one game that returns to the classic pixelated times of old, sorta. We were given the opportunity to experience 3D Dot Game Heroes in all its glory, and we we’re quite impressed to say the least. In a society where gamers expected the latest in 3D graphics and technology, there... more

So it seems the folks over at Atlus have been watching a bit too much late night TV. At least, that’s what we have to assume after seeing this latest spot for 3D Dot Game Heroes.
After all, why else would they be offering “natural sword enhancement”? Unless they know something about gamers that none of us are willing to admit, that is?
…anyway, moving on!
Regardless of blade size (length or girth), I think it’s a pretty foregone conclusion that my first Dotnian hero will be named “Smilin’ Bob”.
Also, since we forgot to post these before, enjoy the first batch of localized 3D Dot Game Heroes screens through the link. The game is due on May 11th for PlayStation 3.

Man, I’m dealing with a wicked nasty case of déjà vu here. I just can’t quite put my finger on why this announcement trailer for 3D Dot Game Heroes feels so familiar.
Maybe it’s something about the orange boulders bouncing down that mountainside. Or perhaps the visual at around :40 of the shield-wielding hero holding his sword aloft. Or maybe it’s that haunting 8-bit flute melody – the tune is so familiar; so much like something I feel like I should know.
I can’t quite nail it down, but I have a feeling this game is going to be epic. In fact, dare I say… legendary?

3D Dot Game Heroes plays like a tribute to The Legend of Zelda, complete with extremely similar enemies and gameplay. It has its own unique hero and story though, which slightly detaches it from Nintendo's storied franchise. It doesn't have to be that way though.3D Dot Game Heroes plays like a tribute to The Legend of Zelda, complete with... more

Since being announced, 3D Dot Game Heroes has generated a lot of buzz around the internet. The game, set in a kingdom whose King has turned everything 3D, has a very unique art style to the game. The debut trailer delves a bit into the backstory, puzzles, combat and bears a very striking resemblance to the Legend of Zelda. Even the song playing during the trailer has a very zelda sound to it.Since being announced, 3D Dot Game Heroes has generated a lot of buzz around the... more
