SAN FRANCISCO -- “The fight against budget cuts in California is about a lot more than saving education,” Alex Schmaus said. “It’s about fighting for a reset of priorities in our country.”
Schmaus was one in a sea of students, faculty and staff who rallied against the education budget cuts at San Francisco State University (SFSU) on Thursday. They were part of a statewide day of protests to save public education. Schmaus is a student representative for Students Faculty Staff United, a coalition at SFSU that organizes against the budget cuts happening throughout California.
“People might think that it’s fun to have a day off,” said Bell Tuntisukharom, a nursing major. He has experienced six furlough days already because of the school’s need to cut back on expenses. “But it’s bad for us in the long run because we are just going to have to keep on coming back [to school] and paying tuition,” said Tuntisukharom.
However the students’ problems extend well beyond the furloughs. Many have trouble getting the classes they need to complete their degrees. Freshman Tim Nguyen intends to pursue a degree in nursing, but he is having difficulties getting into the basic courses he needs, such as general human biology and microbiology.
“I’m going to have to try somewhere else,” Nguyen said. “Go to a different school or crash classes.” Some have already tried that. “I got kicked out of a few classes because I was trying to crash them,” said Tuntisukharom.
Some teachers will accept as many students as they can into their already full classes, Nguyen says. It means students are sitting on the floor, in the aisles or standing in the back.
“I’ve definitely had several classes where I’ve sat on the floor,” Kasha Perez, a political science major, said. “We’re paying almost $5,000 a year to attend this university. I would hope that we would be able to afford a chair.”
With the consistent fee hikes, Perez has had to take on two jobs, totaling a 40-hour workweek on top of her full course load at SFSU. “[The cuts are] hitting across the board,” Perez said. “Not just CSU, [but also] community colleges, adult education centers and the UCs.”SAN FRANCISCO -- “The fight against budget cuts in California is about a lot... more

Forget the Money: Make Art for Art's Sake
Q&A // Video , Eming Piansay,
Dec 01, 2009
Editor’s Note: Earlier this month, up-and-coming Bay Area artist Nikki Lau held her first art show since graduating from college. Lau’s nearly year-long project comprised of a home-made living room piñata stuffed with candy and packaging peanuts. At the end of the art show, Lau and show spectators collectively smashed the piñata to pieces. YO! was there to document the artistic destruction. Eming Piansay spoke to Lau about the inspiration behind her project and about trying to make it as an artist in this recession.
YO!: How would you describe your artwork right now?
Nikki Lau: My work is mixed media, large-scale installations, which will hopefully be the theme for the next five projects.

60,000 Teacher Jobs Restored with Stimulus, Educators Say It's Not Enough
New America Media, News Report, Rupa Dev and Aaron Glantz, Posted: Oct 24, 2009
More than 60,000 of the 250,000 education jobs saved nationally by President Barack Obama's stimulus package were in California, according to data released this week by the California Department of Education.
Community activists expressed relief over the saved jobs, but Fred Glass, spokesperson for the California Federation of Teachers, cautioned that while the stimulus package "stopped some of the bleeding," the state still had to lay off an estimated 10,000 teachers.
"It's slightly better than we thought it would be," Glass said. "But that's because most of the districts depleted their reserves or found other ways to keep cuts away from the classroom ... They cut back on supplies, gardeners, school support secretaries, and food service workers."
"You can't have a functional school without all that," he said.
The $4.9 billion in education funding that California received under the $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act partially offset deep cuts to classrooms that were made by politicians in Sacramento. Rather than resulting in new teachers being hired, the stimulus package caused fewer teachers to be laid off.

Nightmare of a Dream Student
New America Media
Commentary, Roberto Dr. Cintli Rodriguez,
Oct 26, 2009
I’ll refer to her as Leticia X.
She is undocumented, but has been in this country since the age of three and is a top student at her high school. Yet, unless the law changes soon, she will be unable to continue with her studies. She tells my students at the University of Arizona that it is wrong that she will not be able to attend college next year: “I consider myself a U.S. citizen. It’s the only country I’ve ever known.”
Her symbolic mother is Leticia A -- a student who set the legal precedent in 1982 in Plyler v. Doe in Texas, permitting undocumented students to be able to attend public K-12 schools, without having to pay exorbitant out-of-state tuition.
Today, Leticia X struggles to change this policy to include K-16 students. If out-of-state fees are exorbitant for out of state K-12 students, the rates are stratospheric for out-of-state college students, generally costing tens of thousands of dollars yearly.

Life Is No Joke: Youth Violence Takes a Toll on Oakland
Commentary and Video, Sean Shavers,
Oct 19, 2009
Editor's Note: Research suggests the number of homicides that take place in Oakland has gone down over the last three years. Young people who live in the hood aren't buying these statistics. On the streets of Oakland today, violence is just as rampant as ever before, they said. YO!'s Sean Shavers, a West Oakland resident, interviewed community members about youth violence and what they believe needs to change in order for youth violence to decrease.
Murder is an everyday occurrence in Oakland, California. There have been eighty-two homicides in
Oakland as of September 23, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
