The American is one of those films that seems like it was made many years ago and only just released. It has much more in common with 50s character dramas than modern thrillers, and is a complete 180 from the frenetic pace of the Bourne franchise. It’s a quiet, contemplative study of a man, and the way he interacts with the world. The pace is almost lifeless, akin with a photo gallery. There is absolutely no rush to the proceedings, and yet the film doesn’t lose your interest. It holds you hostage and forces you to absorb every detail of its phenomenal cinematography. George Clooney makes for an incredibly subtle protagonist, and this is probably his best acting work to date. It’s easy to think Going the Distance will fall short. It’s a romantic comedy relegated to the dreaded early September time slot – also known as, the month of forgotten movies – so it’s very possible that it’s a bit lacking in qualities of merit. But while I can’t say it’s the most memorable or consistently snappy comedy I’ve seen, I can say it has its pluses. I’m not proud. This is a warning. A warning for any being, human or otherwise, who believes that Vampires Suck could qualify as a comedy under any definition of the genre. It is, more appropriately, a horror film, capable of shocking and revolting a sentient audience with a variety of so-insanely-simple-minded-and-stupid gags that your very faith in humanity will be sickeningly crushed under the sound of overzealous vampire fangs. There is a Lady Gaga cameo, though Lady Gaga herself is above this level of self-ridicule. There is a host of terrible to moderately talented comedian cameos, all of whom appear ready and willing to accept their paychecks. There is a plot, though it is drawn directly from the first two Twilight films, and makes about as much sense in parody as it did when taken seriously. What you have to understand about successful spoof comedy is that it is drawn from satire, i.e. it rises above the ludicrously low intelligence level of the source in order to make mockery of it. These guys don’t understand what satire is, and instead dig even deeper to hit a level of lowbrow that would be hard pressed to stay on a human face. It’s really remarkable to watch... Jason Bateman and Jennifer Aniston have a lot in common. Since their respective comedy series ended, they’ve appeared in a steady stream of big screen films… many of them duds. Jen’s latest was The Bounty Hunter, while Jason’s was Couples Retreat. I didn’t see either, but I get the feeling I’m not missing out. That’s why when The Switch paired these two together – charming as they may be – I kept my expectations low. Especially given the premise: Kassie, a single almost-40-something, decides to get artificially inseminated. At a ridiculous “I’m getting pregnant” party, Wally, Kassie’s neurotic best friend who harbors repressed feelings for her, drunkenly swaps out the donor sperm for his own.... Welcome to Britain in 117AD. The great Roman empire is nearing the end of its conquest of the known world, and has come up to a roadblock in the form of the Picts.
