An article in the January issue of Middle East Architect initially had me chomping at the bit to read more about what I view a rather exciting topic, or rather marriage of topics; sustainability, lighting and design. The author, however, falls short of answering his own question. Readers are left, then with the challenge of exporing these complex subjects themselves.
How have developments in design and particularly lighting design impacted architectural practice and have such developments led to gains in sustainability?

Each year there are more inventions that are created to eventually eliminate the world’s need for nonrenewable resources. One of the latest concepts is the Turbine Light concept. The Turbine Light is an idea to light up the highways by using wind-generated energy instead of electricity.
The Turbine Lights work by using the air from the cars as they pass the light poles on the highway. Of course, the concept would work much easier if the lights were in a position where wind gusts are normally and naturally high.
Although the concept is smart and innovative, there are some minor considerations. One question is whether or not a passing car would be able to generate enough wind to produce the energy the lights need.
Recently the concept was entered into a Greener gadgets competition that was searching for new ways to save the planet. If this concept were to work it could greatly change the infrastructure and possibly lead to more innovative ideas about transportation. There is a growing demand for alternative energy uses and the two most promising energy forces are the sun and the wind. With the Turbine Lights, the wind is used.

Ingenious design often anticipates needs we do not even know we have – the telephone was scoffed at initially, and the electric bulb (now a cultural symbol of bright new ideas) was at first an absurd proposition. So try fitting this into your mental socket: someday soon we might not even use the light fixtures we know and love.

Piezoelectricity Generation X!
Electric polarization in a substance resulting from the application of mechanical stress – that’s what Piezoelectricity is. It’s used in these: Eco-Enegry Flooring System pads that use the pressure applied by people walking, running, rolling over to squeeze piezoelectric blocks. Upon squeezing, energy is generated and stored on a paper battery system. Then, THEN, the energy is used for, what else? LED lights!
