Neg Norton is president of the Yellow Pages Association, a group that's taken some hits on TreeHugger for pushing paper phone books. Today, his association is rolling out a new, national opt-out Internet site, where people will be able to end delivery of paper phone books to their doorsteps. If you don't want them, they won't be delivered ... for at least a few years. Norton sat down with Treehugger to talk about the launch of yellowpagesoptout.com, an improvement on an older model, which required people to contact individual publishers for opting out of paper directories.
TH: Tell me, why did the Yellow Pages industry decide to launch this upgraded opt-out site?
NEG NORTON: We're trying to do the right thing here, by our customers, and environmentalists and everybody. We think this site is a really positive step toward that ...
There are 158 domestic publishers, and all of them are on the site.
TH: But why did you decide to create a clearinghouse for opting out of phone books?
NN: It doesn't make any sense for us to deliver phone books to people who don't want them. We don't want to irritate consumers, and it creates no value for our customers, either.

Self-described pornographer, sex worker, and sex blogger Furrygirl opted for a patdown instead of the pornoscanners at the TSA checkpoint at the airport in Seattle, citing health concerns about radiation emitted by new devices.
To protest the TSA's invasive new "enhanced" screening procedures, she stripped down to see-thru, sexy underwear prior to her "grope-up," and videoblogged the whole thing (well, what the camera could capture from its vantage point on the little tray traveling down the conveyor belt).
"Instead of being scared and humiliated like the TSA wants me to be, I'm going to try and enjoy this experience the best I can," she says before she enters the screening area. "I'm just sorry the TSA doesn't work like a brothel, where you get to pick the one that's hottest."
I'd say what's most interesting about the video is what it doesn't show: the facial expressions of the TSA workers, the reactions of other passengers. At any rate, I applaud her efforts to stick it to The Man.

When a San Diego man opted out of security screening using the Advanced Imaging Technology (AIT) at Lindbergh Field Friday, he stripped down to his underwear in an attempt to avoid the pat-down procedures.Samuel Wolanyk
Samuel Wolanyk took the protest started Nov. 13 by Oceanside's John Tyner to a whole new level.
While Tyner videotaped his refusal to be patted down, telling the agent "If you touch my junk, I'll have you arrested," Wolanyk decided to give TSA a look at his body down to his Calvin Klein's.
Through a statement released by his attorney Sunday night, Wolanyk said "TSA needs to see that I'm not carrying any weapons, explosives, or other prohibited substances, I refuse to have images of my naked body viewed by perfect strangers, and having been felt up for the first time by TSA the week prior (I travel frequently) I was not willing to be molested again."

By now, if you haven’t heard the outrage at the TSA’s “enhanced” pat-down procedures, then you don’t use the internet, and you’re not reading this blog.
They grope children. They touch your junk. The procedures are ludicrously ineffective and harmful from a security point of view. And the naked-picture xray machines are most likely unsafe.
Things like this get me feeling all rebellious and Jeffersonian. So, since I’m flying up to Joyent’s Vancouver offices today, I decided to do a little prep work.
First, I took the UCSF letter, added a bit of highlighting and annotation to make it a bit easier to scan, and printed it out. You can get a copy from http://j.mp/cancer-ray.
I was worried that I’d chicken out. No, not “worried”. I was sure I’d chicken out. Of course I would. I talk a good game about incendiary politics and unconventional ideals, but when the chips are down, I generally do the expedient thing like a nice polite citizen. I’m not one of these “talk down the authorities” types, even though I wish I was.
But then my flight was cancelled, and I learned that I’d have to be in the airport until 12 to catch the next one. The extra time to kill strengthened my resolve. “So what if I’m detained?,” I thought. “I don’t have to be anywhere for 5 more hours.” Plus I was alone, so there wasn’t anyone else’s embarrassment to worry about. I repeated the confidence mantras in my head. They’re expendable workers. I own this place. I’m the boss. They work for me. The only reason I don’t fire them is that they’re cheaper than robots. Etc.
I started talking to the family behind me as soon as I got into the security line, a middle-aged couple with 2 adolescent boys and a girl about 4 or 5. They were amused by my shoes, so it wasn’t too hard to strike up a conversation.
I asked where they were from. Santa Clara. Heading to Toronto for some family thing. I asked if they’d heard about the new X-Ray machines. The dad was tired and apathetic. She said, “Oh, yeah, I heard about those on the news, that if you don’t go through, they grope you or something, and if you do, they take a naked picture of you.”
“Yeah, it’s messed up. Did you know that the UCSF oncology department thinks they pose a serious health risk, especially to children or anyone at risk for breast cancer?”
“Whoa, no, I didn’t know that!”

The long making of the European Union should receive a fresh impetus after the approval of the Lisbon Treaty, drawn up to replace the European Constitution that was rejected in referendums in France and Holland.
