Not on our definitive Five Favorites, but these shorts are definitely worth checking out whether due to their own online buzz, my personal like (even if they're not on the top list) or from our Facebook Page recommendations.
Honorable Mentions:
Panic Attack
Something we were watching the other week. What started as a music video for the band SNAKE became a viral sensation when the cock rock was replaced with the Mars Attacks! strings and East Hastings. Aside from proving the right music makes even the campiest B-Movie scene into a harrowing vision, it got director/animator Federico Alvarez the attention of Sam Raimi.
--
Dead and Lonely
An IFC web-series directed by Ti West that combined dating neurosis, a haunting bass soundtrack and the proof that Los Angeles is a lonely place. Except if you're a vampire.
---
The Horribly Slow Murderer with the Extremely Inefficent Weapon
Technically a trailer for a film that's even longer, but Richard Gale's short is worth it. Think if Sam Raimi felt REALLY sadistic about the audience when he was making Drag Me To Hell.

The Mysterious Explorations of Jasper Morello

It's been hard to peg down Ti West, whose Trigger Man launched him to prominence among the circle of creative talents that are apart of The Mayor's collective roost. Comparisons for Trigger can range from "Old Joy with serial killers" to the "Hipster Horror" title that Murder Party and Blood Car also share.
But in a weird way, that's exactly why we like Ti West.
One of the first things he would admit is that Trigger Man isn't a horror film. And yet, there are legitimately tense and shocking moments when the build up finally subsides into running and violence, which cements West as one of the more interesting directors working within "horror" at the moment.
Based on what he could do with Man, he was given the reins for Cabin Fever 2, which wound up becoming far more interesting in behind-the-scenes stories and production battles than the film itself, which became relegated to screening at horror festivals and an eventual DVD that West wanted his name taken off yet had enough of his material used that he couldn't.
It's a real shame since West has a clear voice and style, even if it fools people into thinking it is nostalgia. Consider Dead and Lonely, his short series for IFC.com that came complete with a viral site, DateorDie, featuring Dracula-themed names. In five parts, what could be a funny idea for a sketch group turns into a waiting game with pulsating drums and music so omnious that even Cthulhu would look over its' winged shoulder.
Justin (Justin Rice) is contacted by Lee (Paige Stark) based on his DateorDie profile and wants to meet--that night. Justin initially freaks out, calling a friend to wonder if he somehow ordered a prostitute. And of course, if you watch the first episode, you'll see exactly what Lee's entire purpose for the teeth-in-cheek site is. West's entire sense shows up in these hand held shots that bump and stumble through rooms, punctuated with constant sound. And yet, the humor is fantastic and sickly adorable, as when Justin finally hugs Lee and remarks, "It's so good to talk to new people."
The House of the Devil opens tonight in New York, Austin and West Hollywood. Director Ti West and Jocelin Donahue are doing a Q&A at the Sunset 5 during the 7:20 and 9:45 pm show. It's also available as Video On Demand for AT&T, Comcast,Cablevision,Time Warner, a few other outlets and Amazon.com. We're also looking for your webcam reviews for The Rotten Tomatoes Show for it by Sunday at midnight.

So what're we doing?
This Is It is the Kenny Ortega helmed documentary about the Michael Jackson tour that could've been.
The House of the Devil is Ti West's ode to satantic thrillers and mood for terror.
Gentlemen Broncos is Jared Hess' return to weird filmmaking and sci-fi novelists without a lot of love right now.
So check 'em out, leave us a webcam and you could get $100 along with some TV goodness.

Ti West sure digs his retro. In THE ROOST — his tidy little horror film about a group of travelers threatened by some really nasty bats — he added a wraparound featuring Tom Noonan in tacky butler drag, holding forth in front of a cardboard set as host of a local Saturday Night Chiller Feature broadcast. For THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL — which reunites West with Noonan and adds in Mary Woronov for good measure — it’s a blast from the eighties, complete with a really gnarly font and a freeze-frame for the opening titles.
Elbow-in-the-ribs tip-offs aside, THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL — about a college student (Jocelin Donahue) who goes to an isolated abode for a babysitter gig and (surprise!) encounters more than she bargained for, including Noonan and Woronov as her clients — shows off West’s skill at building atmosphere and his predilection for eerie nuance over gross-out gore. The SAW franchise (and if any series deserves the term “franchise,” it’s that one) may be more efficient in logging a body count, but HOUSE is the kind of film that reminds you how cool it is to settle back and just let the dread soak in.
West shared some spooky goings-on that happened on-set, and talked about the audience’s responsibility in making sure that the labors of horror’s more unique visionaries don’t completely vanish from the screen. Click on the link to hear the interview.

Ti West’s newest horror flick, The House of the Devil, is for people who have their optometrists on speed dial. The camerawork is often out of focus, while the plot is more obvious than the “E” on an eye chart.
Shot in Lime Rock, Conn., it is set in the 1980’s and stars Jocelin Donahue as Sam, a comely college student. Sam is so hard up for money that she accepts a babysitting gig even after learning there is no baby.
