Pointed out to me months ago by a friend of mine, the Coen Brothers short, World Cinema.
It is hilarious. And, according to him, is even more hilarious when considering the sex scene from Climates.

A higher quality reel than the one that previously came out. This time we can clearly make out all of the explosions, gunshots and pseudo one-liners in The Expendables that'll make it a question for 2010.
Because, in an odd way, I'm incredibly excited for the second coming of Stallone as aging action vet leading an ensemble cast of other action vets.
Not to mention Terry Crews being involved ("He said we're dead in a funny accent!")

There's no telling how long this version of the gag reel will stay on the Interwebs. Even the hokey homage to the original theme song is in here.
But kudos to Paramount for some awesome viral prep work to remind us the DVD comes out on November 16th!
edit: Nevermind. It done got pulled. Now you have to wait for the DVD. In the meantime, enjoy our Top 5 Best Space Ships.

There's something rather depressing about this trailer, but I can't seem to put my finger on it. Maybe I've forgotten if we ever saw Andy before this, maybe Pixar has decided to swing us around due to their work with more recent fair like Up and Wall-E.
Whatever the reason, the trailer is awesome.

When we do our clean-up over on Current.com/Movies for related and unrelated material, there are times that I'm frankly stumped. Because this teaser trailer for Hardware, a clunky sci-fi flick from the 90s by Richard Stanley, is a bit of a mystery.
In it, we're treated to Lemmy (or Motorhead fame) driving a cab in a cameo. Sure, fine, great, whatever. But I saw this film a long time ago, and it gets much weirder including cameos from GWAR, Iggy Pop and scenes from Salo. So, is it also Music? Is it a Comedy? Is it Green (since, you know, world destruction and all.) Is it Tech because of cyborgs?
I don't know.
I do know it comes out on DVD next week. It isn't nearly as entertaining as this clip though.

There's nothing like creepy pseudo-human/lizard hybrids to really make our morning coffee taste sour. But when it's the horrendous combination of science and sci-fi that is Splice, well then we get interested.
Our friends at Rotten Tomatoes have the first clip, which is above, that introduces the film's deadly chimera. Not to mention I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for director Vincenzo Natali (Cube.)
Splice comes out in limited release on November 30th.

Ah, video game spoof trailers. You are my crack cocaine in digital form.
It also doesn't get better than a historic Arcade game like Paperboy, which now turns into a dying father's wish for his son to become a paperboy. Complete with hilarious Super Mario reference, why you should break non-subscribers' windows and making the 8-bit soundtrack into a legitimately sad tune.

In this history of bad ideas, The Tooth Fairy has to be enough to make anyone over 8-years old awkwardly groan. Even the premise of the film (bad-ass underachiever does thing, becomes pawn in unwitting yet hilarious plot to have unmanly, un-bad-ass job and wear tights) is stretching it. But this is the brain child of Michael Lembeck, who most won't know is the director of the last two Santa Clause films.
For all the grumbling, Johnson's a fine comic actor that kids can giggle at. Their parents, meanwhile, will remember back to the pop culture nostalgia of smelling what he's cooking. Then again, even Tim Allen proved he could be chuckle worthy and able to subsist on the "Tim The Toolman" brand. That, too, was before being in a Lembeck film.
So! Using some help from our friends at Rotten Tomatoes, we can even make an informed guess about how well this film will do thanks to Lembeck's ham-fisted involvement.
Please see the graphic below:

Looks bad, right? Nonsense. Critically? It'll be a failure.
Commercially? Kids love this shit. Good for you, Lembeck.

KING CRAB ATTACK ! from Jérôme Lozano (Headeater) on Vimeo.
Occasinoally, one may believe that a joke can go too far. Grégoire Sivan's trailer for his seven-minute short, King Crab Attack, is treading that very line despite his obvious B-Film nature. Sure, mutant crabs attack a city and the only way to combat them is get bigger. But more than anything, this joke trailer begs far more interesting questions about the art of making a trailer.
Clearly, everything is here: the film's title is perfectly described, we are shown the plot's problem and then--invariably--the solution, all in 35 seconds.
Of course, it is a short film about giant crabs, so should I really be taking this seriously? Probably not.

The art of the video game adaptation is a difficult one. Well, rather, it ultimately leads to wishing one were able to unsee the latex and spandex horror that a director would regurgitate on camera for the sake of a studio. Or, if you're Dr. Uwe Boll, you create films that legitimately say "fuck you" to its' fanbase and your potential critics.
Then again, there are fan-made trailers that are just awesome. The people behind Inglourious Plumbers come back for a sequel with Dig Dug. In which the harmless game about digging and avoiding monsters becomes a stalker-horror flick in the vein of "Wes Carpenter and Eli Zombie."

Antonio Campos' Afterschool has sort of haunted me ever since last year's New York Film Festival, when I didn't bother to see it. Ideally, it's about a socially awkward kid who unwittingly films a murder and he is later warped via the "YouTube Mind-Set" of viral videos and web clips.
Mike D'Angelo and Vadim Rizov discuss it more in depth, including conversations between D'Angelo and the director, here.
The trailer, as far as I can see, sets up the essentials for a pseudo-moody piece involving disenfranchised youth. Fantastic.
Just...it's not what the film is about.

Ghost Town is one of the films I'm most excited about at NYFF, even if it is a "dweeb" festival with no wi-fi. From NYFF:
With this absorbing three-part epic documentary, Zhao Dayong joins the ranks of the essential Chinese independent filmmakers, led by Jia Zhangke and Wang Bing. Zhiziluo is a remote village in China’s mountainous southwest, lined with empty shells of buildings and watched over by a Chairman Mao statue. In this dilapidated ghost town, the young filmmaker Zhao documents remarkable signs of life: father and son pastors, parsing the Bible and the teachings of long-departed missionaries; lovers whose relationships are reduced to a matter of economics; a 12-year-old boy, left behind by his parents and living a near-feral existence. Throughout, Zhao composes brilliant, haunting images that use the harsh beauty of the landscape as a counterpoint to a study of different forms of abandonment, and different modes of survival.
Ghost Town plays on Sunday, 9/27 at Walter Reade Theater.

As reported yesterday, Patrick Swayze died from pancreatic cancer at the age of 57. So it's fitting that we're watching a Current Remembers about the actor.

This is the introduction you need for Cory McAbee's Stingray Sam. You must now watch this first episode and, if you're in Los Angeles on Tuesday, 7 pm at the Downtown Independent Theater to go watch the rest of this incredible series.
What? You can't make it?
Well, then you can watch the entire thing streaming live on Tuesday. You actually have no reason not to watch one of the best films/mini-series of 2009. So do it. If you don't, then you'll never know the super secret handshake, you'll never live in space and you won't get to see Union Pool (which was an awesome bit of nostalgia for yours truly as I used to live near that bar. I kind've went to Pete's Candy Store more often if only because they made a better Manhattan. Ironic, right? Oh nevermind. Watch the first episode.)

It is no where a bad thing to say that Harmony Korine's Trash Humpers came out of no where. It was announced quietly for the Toronto Film Festival and New York Film Festival. According to TIFF's site, the film "is no exception: creepy masks, low-grade torture, frequent public urination, senseless vandalism and the title, acted out on defenseless garbage cans, all have a confrontational panache about them to be sure. But the film is also full of poetry, dance, song and moments of aching poignancy."
NYFF has: "This episodic tale of a band of cretins who go around brutalizing dolls, molesting plant life and – yes – rubbing up against garbage cans is outrageous, scary, hilarious, distinctly American and oddly touching—as well as Harmony Korine’s purest film yet."
And now, a brief clip above makes me overly excited for this wonderful piece.

Your eyes didn't stutter. In fact, that's a physical impossibility. But yes, there is a new trailer out for a Bollywood take on Aladdin called...Aladin. That extra 'd' just makes everything so much more awkward.
I'm not sure how to even describe this trailer. So numerically sounds the best:
It takes 34 seconds to get to the actual trailer.
Aladin has a lower-case 'a' on his sweater so we can recognize him.
Random bits of English are thrown in.
There is dancing.
??????
Profit.

I'm going to admit it. I think this is without a doubt proof that Jeffrey Wells is one of the most forward-thinking science fiction filmmakers of our time. There have been plenty of short films that have attempted to be "steampunk." They've pandered and pleaded with sci-fi sites to see them in that light. Websites like io9, Ectoplasmosis and even BoingBoing try to capture what steampunk means.
But they fail.
Jeffrey Wells knows steampunk.
It's in the streets, under our feet, boiling and swirling. Steampunk is HERE.
IT IS IN THE AIR.
AND I HAVE SQUEEZED ALL THE HUMOR THAT I COULD FROM THIS.

We wholeheartedly demand you click on the link below this text to watch and listen to Nick Cave reading from Chapter 10 of his upcoming novel, The Death of Bunny Munro. Above is Chapter 3.
And if there must be a tie-in to film, then Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, who also provided a score for the book, did the same for John Hillcoat's upcoming The Road and previously for The Proposition and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.
