One of the many threads in Syriana -- a film which combines several complex stories which all connect, if only indirectly -- is about a proposed merger of two oil companies. One of the Gulf states has just signed a deal to supply oil to China, which upsets a Texas-based company named Connex. Then Connex announces a merger with another company named Killen, which has just signed a deal to drill for oil in Kazakhstan, which should solve the problem -- except for the fact that Killen doesn't have drilling rights for where the oil actually is. Could the Chinese be buying the oil, shipping it to Kazakhstan, who sell it to the US after all, but through Killen?One of the many threads in Syriana -- a film which combines several complex stories... more

With the current state of unrest in the Middle East, 2005's Syriana seems especially timely. One of the central issues in the movie is control and access of oil, and whether it's in America's best interest to have uninterrupted access of that oil it comes down to a choice between that or a free democracy in the countries producing or refining oil. This choice is symbolized in Syriana through the character played by Alexander Siddig, Prince Nasir Al-Subaai, who is trying to enact real reform in his country, but is thwarted by the US when he decides to make a business deal with China.
