The historic British seaside town of New Brighton saw a £70 million redevelopment plan for the regeneration of New Brighton in 2004. The aim was of bringing jobs and tourism back into the much neglected area. Part funded by the European Union and known as the Neptune Project.
The Neptune Project involved two phases. The first phase saw the redevelopment of the Floral Pavilion theatre and was completed in December 2008. The second phase of the project would have seen the filling in of the Marine Lake to build a supermarket on top. However the phase two plans were rejected on account of financial feasibility, and local scepticism over the actual worth to the community on the whole.
In October 2007, the Government rejected a public enquiry into the plan, and an amended plan was approved. The amended plan included a Morrisons supermarket, high street coffee chains, a McDonalds, a hotel casino and a digital cinema on the seafront. Local objections were taken into consideration and the revised plan included revamping the Marine lake which will keep its original location. The redevelopment work of phase two finally started in December 2009 and is now in full swing.
Will this much needed redevelopment rekindle some of New Brighton's historic past or revitalise the local economy? Or will it still retain its reputation for the UK's last resort just now with its own golden arches? The historic British seaside town of New Brighton saw a £70 million... more
