In an interview with the New York Times, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) revealed Tuesday that he decided to oppose a Medicare buy-in in part because liberals like Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) liked it too much.
[I]n the interview, Mr. Lieberman said that he grew apprehensive when a formal proposal began to take shape. [...]
And he said he was particularly troubled by the overly enthusiastic reaction to the proposal by some liberals, including Representative Anthony Weiner, Democrat of New York, who champions a fully government-run health care system.
"Congressman Weiner made a comment that Medicare-buy in is better than a public option, it's the beginning of a road to single-payer," Mr. Lieberman said. "Jacob Hacker, who's a Yale professor who is actually the man who created the public option, said, 'This is a dream. This is better than a public option. This is a giant step.'"
Lieberman's comments go a long way toward validating the prevalent theory in progressive blogger circles -- that he, as the Washington Post's Ezra Klein put it, "seems primarily motivated by torturing liberals."
Washington Monthly blogger Steve Benen speculated just on Monday about what would have happened if liberals had expressed disappointment with the Medicare buy-in, rather than enthusiasm. "Would Lieberman -- who not only ran on a Medicare buy-in platform in 2000, but also signaled some preliminary support for the idea last week -- be willing to kill reform over the idea now?"
Lieberman had supported a Medicare buy-in as recently as three months ago.
Meanwhile, the fickle senator said he's closer to supporting reform, but still not there yet.In an interview with the New York Times, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) revealed Tuesday... more

The Brooklyn high school janitor who caught two female language teachers in a state of conjugating bliss first thought the hot and heavy pair were students -- and that's why he alerted school officials, sources told The Post yesterday.
While the rest of James Madison HS was in the auditorium cheering on students as they performed in the annual "Sing" competition the night of Nov. 20, French teacher Cindy Mauro, 33, and Spanish teacher Alini Brito, 29, were brushing up on each other's foreign tongues, sources said.
The two instructors were undressed in a classroom by the time janitor Robert Colantuoni inadvertently walked in on the action, sources said.

Assuming they were students, he called for assistant principal Jodie Cohen, who brought an end to the affair at the Midwood school.
Cohen declined to comment yesterday.
Both teachers were suspended, and will be temporarily reassigned to a "rubber room" in Brooklyn to await their fate.
Mauro, who lives in Bay Ridge with two other women, recently went punk, dying her hair pink, getting several new tattoos, and wearing tight, low-cut clothing, neighbors said.
"She would have parties until 3 a.m. with mostly female guests," one neighbor said. "There would be people coming in at all hours making noise."
Students of the two teachers said they were shocked by the news, but had noticed a change in Mauro's behavior recently.
"She was flirty with the guys," one senior said. "She would act like she was a teen."Read more:... more

A state media report says a massive landslide in northern China partially has buried a village and killed at least 23 people, and that rescuers are seeking survivors.
The official Xinhua News Agency says the landslide occurred Monday in Zhangzishan Township, near Luliang city in northern Shanxi province.
Xinhua said Tuesday that rescuers have recovered 23 bodies from the debris so far, and that two people have been pulled out alive.
Most of those killed were migrant workers who worked at a nearby coal mine.
Xinhua quoted the local Communist Party chief, Nie Chunyu, as saying that most of the victims were from the southwestern Yunnan province.A state media report says a massive landslide in northern China partially has buried a... more

Even before Attorney General Eric Holder made it official, the Obama administration's decision to try Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in a New York City federal court drew fire from conservatives who question his willingness to wage war on terrorists.
Debra Burlingame, the sister of a pilot whose plane was hijacked and crashed into the Pentagon on 9/11, said in a statement that "the trial will be a travesty." She supports military trials for Mohammed and four other defendants.
"In open court, it will be Khalid Shiek Mohammed who will hold forth," she said, "mocking his victims, exulting in the suffering of their families, ridiculing the judge, his lawyers and the American justice system, and worst of all, rallying his jihad brothers to kill more Americans."
In his announcement, Holder said the Justice Department will seek the death penalty against Mohammed and the other defendants. He said five other defendants, including a suspect in the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole, will be tried before military commissions.
"For over 200 years our nation has relied upon a faithful adherence to the rule of law," Holder told reporters. "Once again, we will ask our legal system in two venues to answer that call."
Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, also a supporter of military trials, said the decision reflected a pre-9.11 mindset, treating the 9/11 attacks as a typical crime rather than an act of war. "These terrorists planned and executed the mass murder of thousands of innocent Americans," he said. "Treating them like common criminals is unconscionable."
Rep. Peter King, a Republican from New York, said the decision makes the city more of a target. Holder responded by citing New York City's experience in conducting previous terrorism trials, including the 1993 attack on the World Trade Center.

A U.S. Army spokesman says the man authorities say went on a shooting spree at Fort Hood has been taken off a ventilator but still remains in intensive care at a military hospital.
Spokesman Col. John Rossi told reporters on Saturday at Fort Hood that he is not sure if Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan is able to communicate.
Hasan was shot during an exchange of gunfire during Thursday's attack. The military moved him on Friday to Brooke Medical Center in San Antonio, about 150 miles southwest of Fort Hood. Army officials have said Hasan is "not able to converse."
Thirteen people were killed and 29 others wounded in Thursday's attack at Fort Hood.LINK: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091108/ap_on_re_us/us_fort_hood_hasan_s_condition... more
