Israel Policy Forum today released the following statement after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s recent visit to the United States:
Israel Policy Forum (IPF) applauds President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for their expressed commitment to the unshakeable bond between the United States and the State of Israel, and to the goal of a lasting peace.
We congratulate President Obama for stating “publicly what has long been acknowledged privately,” that “the borders of Israel and Palestine should be based on the 1967 lines with mutually agreed swaps.” As the President reiterated in his remarks at AIPAC, this means “that the parties themselves – Israelis and Palestinians – will negotiate a border that is different than the one that existed on June 4, 1967,” which is “a well-known formula to all who have worked on this issue for a generation.”

Today, President Obama met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the oval office for a meeting that lasted almost two hours longer than anticipated. The outcome can be summed up in a sentence which would say that Netanyahu rejects the notion that a Palestinian state can be established based on 1967 borders. But there is more to it than meets the eye.
Netanyahu alleged that President Obama's proposal of using the 1967 Israeli-Palestinian borders as a basis for a peace agreement does not take account of certain changes that have taken place on the ground, offering a reason that the 1967 lines were not drawn from peace, but rather from repeated wars. The changes on the ground to which Netanyahu refers are 'demographic', meaning that illegal settlements have been built on the land which cannot be reversed. And this, according to Netanyahu, would be a threat to Israel's security.
In an additional affront to the US President, Netanyahu declared that 'Peace based on illusions will crash eventually on the rocks of Middle East reality'.
Netanyahu's defiant stance is long-standing as far as this Oval Office is concerned: following the end of a construction moratorium that ended last September, the Israeli prime minister refused to halt settlement construction despite calls from Obama and the international community. This refusal prompted the Palestinians to walk away from the negotiating table.

'That with the winds of change blowing through the Arab world, it's more urgent than ever that we try to seize the opportunity to create a peaceful solution between the Palestinians and the Israelis.'
Barack Obama on April 5, 2011 addressing reporters after his meeting with
Israeli President Shimon Peres
The two presidents met today, though Peres' position is considered largely ceremonial, focusing their attention on three main topics:
US/Israeli cooperation as it relates to Israel's security
The recent wave of unrest in the Arab world and regime changes therein
The stalled peace negotiations for a two-state solution
On Monday, April 4th, the Jerusalem municipal planning committee gave preliminary approval for the building of 942 housing units in in contested areas of the city's eastern sector. Though there was condemnation from the White House regarding the decision, President Obama did not mention the subject to reporters.'That with the winds of change blowing through the Arab world, it's more... more

The 7PM EST News this evening on al-Jazeera featured former US Israeli ambassador Martin Indyk as guest for about half of the 30 minute segment. Indyk is currently Vice President for Foreign Policy at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C
In a February 14th, 2010 al-Jazeera news report, Indyk is also said to have been responsible for 'a number of controversial (read failed) policies towards the Muslim world as National Security Director for the Middle East in the Clinton White House, including the policy of "dual containment" towards Iran and Iraq, and the failed peace process in Israel-Palestine.'
Since yesterday's release of the 1670 documents, referred to as the Palestine Papers', which represent a decade of negotiations between the Palestine Authority and Israel, there have been very strong denials from Palestinian leaders about what has so far surfaced as concessions they seemed to have made without getting much in return.

If you are wondering about Dr. Barghouti, you're not alone. As of late, it seems that it takes a serio-comedic show to dismantle the mainstream media when it comes to what matters. I am speaking of Jon Stewart of the Daily Show, who had the audacity (or good sense) to have Dr. Marwan Barghouti together with pro-peace Anna Baltzar (representing the Jewish side) on his show on October 28th. Naturally, what followed, aside from one heckler in the audience, was a torrent of misinformation and angry press about the 'lies' that were being spread about Israel on the show. Jon Stewart is Jewish, - in case there is any doubt.
