J.P. Morgan Chase, unsurprisingly seeking to make up ground in opposition to competitor Goldman Sachs, promises to begin a fund that could focus on World wide web and digital mass media businesses, based on a study in the Wall Street Journal.
The fund is seeking to raise $500 million dollars to $750 million dollars, in line with the report, which cites “people familiar with the matter.” The actual agency delivered marketing materials to potential investors approximately 2 weeks back, the article declares. Mark Pincus, co-founder and chief executive of Zynga, the social network gaming company most famous for creating FarmVille, says that “the web is like one big cocktail party.”
Zynga Game Network has aready reached the same levels of fame as its San Franciscan technology contemporaries Twitter and Facebook.
The company is now reportedly worth $5.5 billion just three years since launch, and has almost single-handedly revolutionised online gaming.
Mark Pincus, founder of Tribe Network, an early social network, and an early investor in both Facebook and Napster, is understandably excited about the company he co-founded in 2007 and named after his “rock star dog.”
“Since the likes of Napster, MySpace and Facebook were created, the web is a social place, with lots and lots of smaller cocktail parties happening everywhere,” Pincus said in his first major UK interview since the creation of Zynga.
“Beforehand, the web was a huge place that wasn’t connected in any way – and then Napster launched [and] the web suddenly lit up. The internet became this place where people could come together around their interests. And now I am hosting one of the biggest cocktail parties online.”
And he’s not joking about it. One of the first companies to take advantage of Facebook opening up its platform to developers in 2007, Zynga tapped into the highly lucrative market of social gaming and virtual goods three years ago.
33 million people around the world have now downloaded FarmVille, Zynga’s most popular game to date, and currently there are 60 million active players. A series of other games followed, such as CafeWorld, Mafia Wars and FrontierVille.

After 12 years, the Internet search giant Google is still struggling to find a significant new revenue source to supplement its lucrative text advertising business. Facebook hopes to avoid these problems.
And now the company with its CEO Mark Zuckerberg are making a play to become the dominant player in virtual currency, a multibillion-dollar business in which Facebook, the world’s largest social network, will face stiff competition from other giant companies like Apple, Google, Amazon or PayPal.
Virtual currencies are a promising way to sell because users buy them in pre-paid chunks, rather than plunking down a credit card for each individual purchase, which increases transaction costs.
Right now, most virtual goods are acquired within games, but music, movies, and other forms of content could follow suit, increasing the stakes in the race to reduce the friction affecting in-app transactions.
Facebook began testing its virtual currency, called Facebook Credits, more than a year ago with some popular games on Facebook. This month, Credits passed a milestone when it became the exclusive payment method for most of the games created by Zynga, the number 1 developer of Facebook applications.
Zynga is expected to have $500 million in revenue this year, which tracks Facebook applications, as millions of users pay real money to buy virtual goods on social games like FarmVille and Mafia Wars. Through Credits, Facebook will take a 30 percent cut.
Because they are accepted by a number of companies, Facebook Credits are are more liquid than those credits within iOS and Android apps can be. And even though they are significantly less liquid than real dollars processed by PayPal they are often handed out in unorthodox ways — for instance, when you sign up for a Netflix subscription, view a video ad, or the like. Facebook itself gives every user 10-25 free credits when they join the social network.
By the end of the year, Facebook expects that Credits will be used to buy the vast majority of virtual goods sold on Facebook. The fast-growing market is expected to reach $835 million on Facebook this year, according to the Inside Network. To bolster that market, Facebook began selling Credits gift cards at Target stores across the country this month.

Three years ago it seemed a match made in heaven. Facebook had tens of millions of users and Zynga had the games like Facebook Texas Holdem Poker and Mafia Wars to keep them coming back and continually draw in new users. Fast forward to today and the symbiotic relationship between the two internet pioneers is a drastically changed one.
A few months back Facebook announced that they were rolling out their own Facebook credits system, which would allow players in games to to purchase virtual items with a single universal currency rather than dealing with the payment gateways of each individual game. Regardless of whether a player wanted to buy facebook poker chips or yoville coins, they could simply use the facebook credits in their account to do both, eliminating redundant fees to payment processors like Paypal.
So how could reducing transaction fees and creating a universal virtual currency be bad for Zynga? Well, for their efforts Facebook is asking a hefty 30% commission for their system of credits. Considering that Zynga’s revenue for 2010 is estimated to be around $400 million dollars, that means Facebook will be getting a $120 million cut in what pretty much amounts to a gigantic “mafia protection fee” for Facebook. This is in addition to the tens of millions that Zynga already pays to facebook in ad fees.
On the other hand, gamers won’t just be limited to buying facebook poker chips or farmville cash from Zynga with the new credits. As the number of developers in the social gaming niche continues to grow at a viral pace, this new credit system will allow players to buy virtual items in just about any game they desire, whether from Zynga, Playfish, Playdom or any other developer. A universal virtual currency would be similar to what the Euro did in 2000 with the elimination of individual countries’ currencies in exchange for one single currency, only this credit system would not be limited by any geographical boundries.

Back in the 70s you'd load up your Atari and pop in the latest cartridge game and you'd be in pixelated heaven, it was all we had afterall. Then came nintendo and sega in many shapes and forms, as well as PC gaming. Eventually playstation and xbox joined the scene with highly graphical and intensely visual games. Fast forward to today and facebook poker chips and farmville coins are the choice of today's gamers.
Facebook poker chips are an online gaming currency used in games like zynga poker, playfish poker and many others on social gaming sites like facebook, myspace, bebo, tagged, and msn games. Facebook poker chips can be bought from the game makers and used to gamble in the tables. Players can also spend their facebook poker chips on items in the game while playing, for example, buying a drunk for a friend or a girl you just met, or buying a chicken for someone who plays texas holdem poorly.
Facebook poker chips fill a big demand in the gaming market since gambling was prohibited in the United States. Poker afficianados can now log in to facebook and grab a seat with their buddies at a tournament table and play with their facebook poker chips, zynga poker chips, myspace poker chips or playfish poker chips. The facebook poker games have become so popular that the world series of poker is even release their own official application along with their own version of facebook poker chips.

That's 80 million people tending digital fields, watering non-existant crops and annoying their the majority of their Facebook friends. As The Independent points out, that's 20% of all Facebook users, more people than use Twitter and more then the UK's entire population.
Zynga, the San Francisco-based company behind Farmville, is also responsible for Mafia Wars, Cafe World, Fishville and Texas Hold Em Poker and boasts annual revenue of around $150m / £97m.
The anti-Farmville Facebook users have their own burgeoning, if not slightly less lucrative, community online too. One group alone called "Not playing Farmville" has over two million users.
The good news for Farmville haters is it's very simple to block Farmville updates from appearing in your Facebook stream without burning any bridges with friends. When you see a Farmville update appear in your news feed, move your cursor to the right of the update and a 'Hide' button will appear. Click that and then click 'Hide Farmville'.
