I believe it’s safe to say that most Americans have heard about the racist slur you made after the commercial break in regards to best supporting Oscar winner Octavia Spenser’s emotional and moving acceptance speech while hosting the 2012 Academy Awards on Sunday, February 26, 2012.
In case you are unclear as to the remark I am referring to, you said:
“That moment for Octavia is what the Oscars is all about. That was pretty amazing… and I loved that movie a lot when I saw it. When I came out of The Help, I wanted to hug the first black woman that I saw, which from Beverly Hills is about a 45 minute drive…”
That comment left me staring at my television screen in disbelief until one of my very close friends – recording artist, author and reality show personality, Norwood Young called after hearing the same disrespectful, tasteless remark and was equally as outraged by the irresponsibility of you, the writers and producers of the Academy.

“I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.
Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity.
But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languishing in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. So we have come here today to dramatize a shameful condition.
