Excerpts of some of the statements by speakers at the Coalition Against Nukes Congressional Briefing Sept. 20, 2012:
'Germany can generate 50% of their power instantly from solar. 80% will be from renewables by 2020. Germany now has an export of surplus power to China. What do they know that we don't know?'
Mariko Bender: World Network for saving Children from Radiation
'The government used to say that one millisievert of radiation exposure was safe. Then they raised it to 20 millisieverts and told us that was safe. It is as if the Japanese people are in a gas chamber. They are trapped there. Now they tell us that 100 millisieverts is safe. The doctors tell us it is safe to conceive, to go ahead and have a baby. They are lying to us. 360,000 children still live there. 75% are in highly contaminated regions. They don't play in the parks or walk on the streets, they just look out the windows and wonder why they can't play outside like they used to. Mothers are bringing leaves, grass, sand inside so the kids can get the experience of nature. They all eat food with radioactivity. Radiation has penetrated their skin, their thyroids, lungs and DNA. 43% of the children have been found to have radiation symptoms. Patients are waiting two years for a follow up. One child was diagnosed with thyroid cancer recently. In Chernobyl, out of 1,000 children, all of them have multiple diseases. Be the voices of the children of Fukushima. Write to the Office of Japanese Prime Minister. Evacuate the children now.'

Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich:
'We are here today at one of the most important times in the history of nuclear power...the industry's outlook has never been more tenuous...The fleet of existing nuclear power plants is aging and they are approaching or have already passed their their useful life...We are starting to find problems with the plants..David-Besse in northwest Ohio...found a large, corroded crater the size of a football in the reactor vessel head that began to crack and bulge..as close as 60 days from breach...(which would have caused a )major release of radioactivity..jeopardiz(ing) the immediate and long-term safety of millions of Americans, not to mention the single biggest source of fresh water in the world, the Great Lakes...FirstEnergy knowingly made false representations to the NRC...Attempting to persuade the NRC that David-Besse was safe to operate, putting profit before the safety of millions of people...The reactor head was replaced with a slightly used one but it began to fail also...FirstEnergy reluctantly agreed to replace it with a new one. Cutting through the concrete shield building they found cracks in the building, lots of them...This shield building is the last line of defense in the event of a reactor meltdown...It is also supposed to protect the reactor from external missiles, like a plane. So if it is cracked, the plant is vulnerable... What is FirstEnergy and NRC's solution to a cracked protective structure? Paint it. I suggest whitewash as an appropriate cover. I have asked for a full investigation by the NRC Inspector General.
...Now...we have heard that the problem with the cracks may be a problem affecting plants across the nation...Repair...will be extremely expensive, Maybe even cost prohibitive. I need help to continue to watch over David Besse and other nuclear power plants to make sure their owners are paying more attention to safety than to profits. PLEASE BLOG ABOUT THE PLANT AROUND YOU AND POST IT.
Just last week NRC engineer turned whistle blower stated, “ The probability of Jocassee Dam catastrophically failing is hundreds of times greater than a 51 foot wall of water hitting Fukushima Daiichi and like the tsunami in Japan, the man-made tsunami resulting from the failure of the Jocassee Dam will-with absolute certainty- result in the failure of three reactor plants along with their containment structures...the three reactors will melt down and release their radionuclides into the environment.”
...Private investors don't see nuclear power as a good investment so the nuclear power plant owners are turning to government to guarantee the private loans if the investment goes bad. We're talking about tens of billions of dollars. THE NUCLEAR INDUSTRY WANTS HANDOUTS. THEY ARE PART OF THAT 47%.I offered an amendment to stop this loan guarantee program with my Republican colleague Mr. McClintock from California.
...Nuclear power should be allowed to fail as an energy source...We have to change the mindset and we have to change the game that is rigged...I spent several hours on the House floor trying to stop a new national park that would glorify the most violent of acts...the unleashing of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki (HR5987). The supporters of the bill want the park to pay homage to the Manhattan Project without properly memorializing the unprecedented destruction it has wrought, starting with the bombs. We have to think carefully what we as a country are memorializing because it speaks directly to who we are as Americans.
...Thanks to the Citizens United Supreme court decision, we are now in a country closer to one-dollar-one-vote than one-person-one-vote. And the nuclear industry has copious amounts of money to spend...to defend their ability to contribute without limits to elections and candidates...SO THE OPPORTUNITY TO FIGHT NUCLEAR POWER IS NOW. AND IT IS CRITICAL THAT WE SEIZE ON IT. That's why the events here are so important. Your work is so important. And I'm grateful for you being here to work on an issue that is bigger than all of us.'Excerpts of some of the statements by speakers at the Coalition Against Nukes... more

Port-au-Prince, Haiti (CNN) — Earthquake victims, writhing in pain and grasping at life, watched doctors and nurses walk away from a field hospital Friday night after a Belgian medical team evacuated the area, saying it was concerned about security.
The decision left CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Sanjay Gupta as the only doctor at the hospital to get the patients through the night.
