... the question which naturally follows: would Wyclef Jean make an effective president? Aristide did a lot of things to upset the ruling elite, which eventually led to his ouster. Can Jean avoid those same mistakes while still changing the old order in Haiti enough to allow for real change? And can he keep his hands clean of the abuses of power that have plagued previous Haitian presidents? Recent allegations of corruption within Jean's Yele organization are a worrying sign, and hopefully not a harbinger of trouble to come.

Groups who once supported the president of Haiti, René Préval, are arming themselves against the government, putting the earthquake-ravaged country in danger of renewed instability and political violence.
Anger and resentment are growing against both the Haitian government and the international community. The Republic of Haiti was born from a rebellion of slaves. The brutal plundering of the Spaniards and the diseases depopulated the island, the first land in which Colombo arrived, from its native inhabitants, the Amerindians Taino. African slaves were then brought to the Caribbean to work on the spanish plantations, later french when the two powers divided the island. Exploitation in the french plantations was so cruel that one third of the slaves died in two or three years.
