We're winding down 2009 with a week left! So what was the most specialist effect to grace screens this year?
Would you believe it was a toss-up between a Moose on Fire, a green alien boner, a soul/blood-sucking mosquito or Vin Diesel? Well, it was.
Now watch to see who won.

In any given year, there's can be a certain drop in quality when it comes to some actors and directors. Ben Foster comes to mind as a high-roller (The Messenger had a Tomatometer of 90 percent) and a low one (Pandorum, which Foster also starred in, had 27 percent.)
So it's fitting we had Matt Atchity, Editor-in-Chief of Rotten Tomatoes, stop by the Year-Endies to help present our Quality Chasm Awards.

As we've come to welcome our new media overlords, so has the market for short films expanded and further evolved. Once measured as an extra five or ten minutes to sneak into a screening, the short film has found a new home through online distribution as well as overshadowing the films they get partnered with at film festivals. That said, here's my Five Favorite Shorts of 2009:
5) The History of Aviation (New York Film Festival, 2009) This is an infuriating short that reads like "filming-by-the-numbers." But it's impossible to deny that Bálint Kenyeres' film isn't magnificent in its' composition as it zooms in and out of the mountains, to the sea and back again while a family searches for a missing child. There's little sense of dread as period actors fumble about or the elderly matriarch drools in her wicker wheelchair. This is instead what you should give to your aspiring filmmakers and say, "This. Just without the whole hammer-on-the-head bit about modernization and crashing."
---
4) Batman: Ashes to Ashes (DailyMotion, 2009)
We were watching this take on Batman as Sin City by way of The Spirit by co-writers/directors Julien Mokrani and Samuel Bodin. It takes all the good parts of an Elseworlds tale and turns it into the sort of thing that you'd never see released under the Batman mythos. Also, it proves a French Batman is still as disturbing as the actual Batman.
---
3) The Slow Game (NYFF, 2009)
Paolo Sorrentino's incredibly intense, yet completely average setting against a rugby practice has you on the edge of your seat the entire time. Only when you realize the tension is nothing but a daily occurrence, do you appreciate the weirdly comforting nature of the short. Also, wicked Guitar Hero cameo.
--
2)Plastic Bag (NYFF, 2009)
Ramin Bahrani proves he has a wicked sense of humor with this short that divided people at NYFF this year. But I'll be damned if it isn't awesome.
---
1) Marble Hornets (Something Awful, 2009)
What started as a Goon thread about creepy images gave birth to a legitimately frightening figure: The Slender Man. A few days later, someone posted about their friend Alex was working on a student film. He slowly got more and more irritable until finally he gave up and couldn't watch the tapes. That was 2006. In June, the tapes were brought back out in an attempt to see what happened to Alex.
Here's the first take:
Hornets is legitimately enthralling, sucking you into its' world (follow the 90+ page thread on SA) and even updating on twitter in real time. As we've come to welcome our new media overlords, so has the market for short... more

The lost art of the movie trailer is a bit of an enigma. A trailer's main purpose is to entice you into waiting and being able to rewatch it countless times while still being pumped for said film. Or, it is meant to shiv a question so deep into your mind that you can't help but break into a studio lot to find out why.
That said, these trailers stood out the most to us this year.
Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans Trailer - Watch more Movie Trailers
5) Bad Lieutenant Port of Call New Orleans
Technically a sizzle reel over the actual trailer, this introduced the world to the supposed madcap nature of Werner Herzog and Nicholas Cage. Yet the actual film was far more bizarre--not for a lack of iguanas and break-dancing souls, but because so much of it depended on Cage's own mannerisms and Herzog's toying with the audience.
Which is what this trailer should've made stridently more clear, yet we were blinded by iguanas.
--
4) C Me Dance
What starts out as a seemingly inspirational story quickly takes a turn for the spitting-out-coffee. Guest appearance by Satan.
--
3) A Serious Man
Speaking of confusing: the Coens' latest took on a whole new life when it came to keeping the beat. The entire process was so off-kilter for a trailer, especially for one of their films, that it looked completely foreign when compared to other films at the time.
--
2) After Last Season
The trailer that set off fevered search for the purpose of Mark Region's debut. After all, no one could believe this was legitimately a film--which, in the year that Old Dogs was released, is surprising.
--
1) District 9
Is it a fake documentary? Is it viral advertising for Halo? Whatever it was, District 9 managed to captivate everyone through its' viral ads demanding residents were escaping and that peacekeeping forces were headed in to keep them under control.
The lost art of the movie trailer is a bit of an enigma. A trailer's main... more
