1. Law Abiding Citizen is the new piece of crapola starring Gerard Butler as a man who wreaks vengeance on the justice system (embodied by lawyer Jamie Foxx) for not properly punishing a thug who killed his wife and child.
2. When the movie opens with a little girl stringing together beads as her father, Butler, works nearby, I was reminded of the 1964 Daisy Girl campaign commercial – you know, the one where the kid with the flower gets nuked?
3. Sure enough: Enter thugs with baseball bats.
4. If you kick off with violence against a woman and child, you’d better damn well make the rest of the movie serious enough to have warranted it. Else I might start thinking you, um, just like violence for its own sake.
5. Well, filmmaker F. Gary Gray (Friday, The Italian Job) appears to like violence for its own sake.
6. A lethal injection gone wrong juxtaposed with a girl’s music recital. A torture session with a buzz-saw and tongue-clamp. A DVD of torture session being sent to the little girl, who pops it in thinking it’s her music recital….
7. Really?
8. Yeah.
9. The stuffing in between is like the perfunctory chit-chat in a porno: actors in suits bat legalese back-and-forth unconvincingly while Butler works his one, intense facial expression on a scale from 1 to 6.
10. This isn’t a movie, it’s a worse-than-average episode of a TV crime procedural with above-average actors.
11. Even its one memorable line, uttered by increasingly besieged mayor Viola Davis, backfires: “If you have to give shotguns to the meter maids, do it.” Alas, it only made me wish I were watching that movie instead.
-Ellen Fox
