British film director Ridley Scott has agreed to direct a new instalment of Blade Runner, almost 30 years after the original.
Producers from Alcon Entertainment said the film will not be a remake but a prequel or sequel to the first one.
The company said Scott has not decided between the options yet.
Blade Runner, which opened in 1982, starred Harrison Ford as a police officer forced out of retirement to hunt for humanoid robots in Los Angeles in 2019.
Although it had disappointing box office sales, it has since become a cult sci-fi classic.
Released three years after Alien, the film solidified Scott as a major talent in the genre.
The 73-year-old director and producer directed Robin Hood last year, and has just finished Prometheus with Charlize Theron, which will come out in 2012
Producers Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson said: "It would be a gross understatement to say that we are elated Ridley Scott will shepherd this iconic story into a new, exciting direction.
"We are huge fans of Ridley's and of the original Blade Runner. This is once in a lifetime project for us."

Vin Diesel and David Twohy to Finally Make 3rd CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK
It turns out that Vin Diesel is no longer full of shit. After many years of what seemed like manufactured buzz from the actor to keep his fans interested, Variety now reports that Diesel and writer/director David Twohy will finally make the third installment in the Chronicles of Riddick franchise. Diesel has continued to keep hope alive in a sequel ever since the cliffhanger ending of 2003’s The Chronicles of Riddick. Despite the lackluster box office of part two, the film did manage to gross $116 million worldwide and spawn two successful videogames (Escape from Butcher Bay and Assault on Dark Athena) Universal has decided to finally give the greenlight to telling the next chapter in the tale of the eye-shinin’ anti-hero.

Riese is a Sci-Fi/Fantasy web series which debuted November 2, 2009. The series is about a traveller named Riese, a seemingly random wanderer, who flees across the dying lands of Eleysia with her wolf, Fenrir. Hunted by a terrifying religious group, The Sect, Riese must evade the assassins that have been sent to kill her and discover their true objective.
Riese's past is shrouded in mystery, as even she cannot recall the events of the night when her entire family was slaughtered and she was forced to flee. On her journey, she’ll piece together her past and her destiny, in a struggle that will hold the fate of the world in the balance - and the once peaceful kingdom of Eleysia will be the battlefield. Despite the impending doom, Riese emerges as the sole beacon of hope.
Riese is co-created by Ryan Copple and Kaleena Kiff, and produced by Galen Fletcher and Nicholas Humphries. Production of the first five episodes is completed, and the next six begin production in December 2009. Episodes will begin streaming online this fall via YouTube and other video distribution channels.
Riese has been noted for its usage of the RED One. It is also one of the first live action sci-fi web series to feature the steampunk genre . Production-value wise, it has been compared to the web efforts of Sanctuary and features a cast of top Sci-Fi actors from a variety of shows. It is also one of the first dramatic web series to incorporate animals as one of their cast ensemble.
