The Debt Ceiling Deal: The Case for Caving

While sitting in a doctor's waiting room yesterday as the couch I was sitting on began to shake like jello, I was reading the article below from Bloomberg Businessweek. Probably one of the more interesting commentaries I've come across on our current political pathology. Anyway, thought some of you might enjoy reading this. I sure did.

Game theory does not concern itself with good and evil. It seeks to predict not which strategies are just, but which are most effective. John von Neumann, a Hungarian-born polymath with a sideline in predicting the blast radius of an atomic bomb, co-authored the discipline’s seminal work, Theory of Games and Economic Behavior, in 1944. He then began thinking about war-game scenarios that weighed the likelihood of an exchange of nuclear weapons. “Early in nuclear negotiations,” says Steven J. Brams, a New York University professor of politics who worked under former Defense Secretary Robert McNamara during the 1960s, “we didn’t know that they were not meant to be used. It took a few years before strategists digested this.” At the height of the Cold War, the application of game theory convinced leaders of the two nuclear-armed superpowers “that if we’re thinking of using them, we’re in deep s–t.”

This summer’s negotiations over raising the debt ceiling seemed to present Democrats and Republicans with a similar dilemma. Failure to reach a deal threatened to bring on the economic equivalent of a nuclear winter. The leaders of the two parties, Barack Obama and Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio), appeared to grasp this, but a vocal band of “Tea Party hobbits,” as their fellow Republican, John McCain of Arizona, dubbed them, refused to go along. They made it clear they were not only willing to bear the catastrophic consequences of a U.S. default, but that they might actually welcome it. Trapped in a classic game of “chicken”—a term game theorists use, too—in which both players entertain the option of killing everyone, the President did what game theory suggests a rational actor would do. He recognized his potential maximum losses were greater than his opponent’s. He caved.

Al Gore speaks with Keith Olbermann on debt ceiling and democracy

These are the words of a man who truly cares for his country. And as a man who spent many years in the confines of Washington DC he got to understand the dysfunction all too well. And he is absolutely correct. This should have been a discussion about jobs, explicity clean energy jobs and how becoming much more aggressive about transitioning to a clean energy economy could jumpstart this country and begin to pay down our debt. This should not have been a bill that attached "super congress committees" and triggers to it that force the agenda to be skewed in favor of the moneyed interests that have run this government's policies for far too many years at the expense of those most vulnerable, education, environment and other programs that are needed. The vote on this may be over, but the fight has just begun.

I can't tell you how refreshing it is to hear this man speak and how happy I am that he is still here in the dialogue. But it too saddens me when I think of what could have been had we had that non violent Tahrir Square right here a deacde ago in support of our true president. There is no disputing that more people now see just what we missed out on. But we should not now allow that to cloud the reality of what we face today and I am grateful for his continuing to spark debate in this conversation of regaining our democratic republic. Through all of this he has remained above all a true statesman and a man of grace and I love him very much for that.

Which is why I support his words here and his call to once again regain the conversation and to work to bring much needed life to our democratic process which is now in critical condition. I will be in Washington Dc this October. I will go because I am standing up for my planet, for my country and for those I love. I will go because we as citizens can no longer sit at home and think it will fix itself. Like the climate crisis our democracy crisis cannot be fixed by standing on the sidelines. Only when we become proactive, focused and willing to truly stand up for what is right will we be able to make changes. It won't be easy, but damn it, my son is worth the fight and so is the country I love that has been so good to me.These are the words of a man who truly cares for his country.
