James Rasmussen has already done a lot to help the Duwamish river stay alive in Seattle, but he's not done yet. The coordinator of the "Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition", which is the public outreach group of the Duwamish superfund site, aims for no less than a clean river with fish that people can eat without getting sick. TIME magazine recently went to interview astronomer Neil deGrasse Tyson and we noticed a huge crate had been delivered to his office at the American Museum of Natural History. He was then kind enough to open it on-camera. The back story of this gift is that Neil was adamant that ABC News include the Saturn V Rocket on its list of The 7 Wonders of America. The folks at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama were so grateful, they sent Neil a replica.TIME magazine recently went to interview astronomer Neil deGrasse Tyson and we noticed... more

Zircons are tiny crystals with a big story to tell. Some of these minerals are the oldest Earth materials ever discovered, and therefore yield clues about what the planet was like after it formed 4.5 billion years ago. In this new Science Bulletins video, travel to a remote island off Greenland's coast and a zircon-making lab in New York State to learn how geologists are using these time capsules to build new hypotheses about the early Earth.Zircons are tiny crystals with a big story to tell. This video is really interesting for two reasons: first, it's a hand-drawn animation that evolves in front of your eyes, and second, I think it explains why scientists like to write blogs for the public about science -- for free! Adapted from Dan Pink's talk at the RSA, this fascinating video illustrates the hidden truths behind what really motivates us at home and in the workplace. This video is really interesting for two reasons: first, it's a hand-drawn... more

This is a rather nice video with a home-made feel to it. It presents a quick view of the American Museum of Natural History in New York, starting on the subway platform (filled with lots of beautiful tile art, all of which I've photographed and shared on my blog). A University of Nottingham video explains the physics that underlies the technology being developed to filter out that annoying drone from 30,000 blasting vuvuzelas in the background of all World Cup football matches. It's interesting to note that this is the same sort of software technology that ornithologists use to record (and "clean up") background noise captured in birdsong recordings.A University of Nottingham video explains the physics that underlies the technology... more
