Italian designer Giorgio Armani opened his first hotel at the world's tallest tower in Dubai on Tuesday (April 27), giving a boost to the Gulf Arab emirate's bid to recover from a debt crisis.
The designer brought his trademark minimalist style to a city famous for excess, with the Armani Hotel Dubai designed with an understated palette of cream and earth colours.
Armani -- whose business is worth around 2.4 billion USD a year in sales -- partnered with Emaar Properties, the Arab world's largest listed developer, in 2005 to develop a series of hotels, resorts and residences in key cities around the world.
From man-made islands shaped like palm trees to an indoor ski slope in the desert, Dubai has marketed itself as the city of bling, putting itself on the map with a bigger is better policy.
A standard room in the hotel, which does not have a single picture on its walls, will cost 4,000 dirhams (1,089USD) a night, while the best suite has a price tag of 40,000 dirhams.
A table at the Prive lounge, which is home to the world's largest LCD screen, will cost at least 3,000 dirhams a visit, as guests can feast their eyes on Armani shows and videos.
The 160-room Armani hotel occupies six floors in the Burj Khalifa tower, which opened on January 4, in addition to eight floors dedicated to 144 Armani luxurious residences.
The two parties declined to reveal the cost of the hotel.
Dubai, one of seven members comprising the United Arab Emirates and the Arab world's trade and tourism hub, saw the sharpest drop in hotel revenues in the Middle East for 2009, hit by the global financial crisis.
The heavily indebted emirate generates around 19 percent of its gross domestic product from tourism and its economy has suffered as people tightened budgets after the crisis.
Dubai's construction boom started when it first allowed foreigners to buy into its property market in 2002. Luxury resorts, hotels, serviced apartments and holiday villas mushroomed, drawing nearly 7 million tourists in 2007.
The Middle East, despite being hit by the global downturn, has shown some resilience over the past year with revenue dropping less than other regions, industry figures showed.
Dubai's hotel market is closest to the bottom of the cycle and is showing signs of recovery with beach hotels leading the way and showing positive growth, a recent report by real estate service company Jones Lang LaSalle said.Italian designer Giorgio Armani opened his first hotel at the world's tallest... more

My heart goes out to North Dakota, who no longer have any items of note in their state. The KVLY-TV mast, was the world's tallest structure, until today's opening of Burj Khalifa (formerly Burj Dubai.) At 2,717 feet, it's the tallest man-made structure EVER. That being said, I've got a gripe here:
Why is everyone so excited about the tallest building in the world. Shouldn't we be focused on more important things? Namely the COOLEST building in the world? These are some potential candidates:
Jogno, Seoul - This building is so awesome. It looks like a regular building that is being attacked by a space creature. This would be the perfect disguise, if space creatures actually attack Seoul.
30 St Mary Axe, London - This building is nicknamed The Gherkin. A gherkin is a type of pickle. Pickles are a cool condiment. Ergo this is a cool building.
Guggenheim, Bilbao - Great design, obviously. More different than anything you've ever seen (unless you've every other Gehry building.) Why is this cool? Because any cool person who just got back from Spain, will go on endlessly about how cool this building is. As I am a sucker for circular reasoning, I'm going to have to agree with them.
Selfridges, Birmingham - Inside it's a department store, outside it looks like a vacuum cleaner. And as your OCD friend says, nothing is cooler than a clean room.
Atomium, Brussels - Who doesn't remember the 1958 Brussels World Fair? This structure is so cool, because it looks like it was built in the future. Today, we live in the future, and our buildings don't even look this cool. Which makes this building cooler than the future it predicted.
Kingdom Centre, Riyadh - This the 45th tallest building in the world, but remains the only building that reminds me of opening beer bottles. I bet this would be a painful daily reminder, if you were an alcoholic living in Saudi Arabia, where beer is outlawed.
Seattle Central Library - Yes, I am impressed by the unorthodox Koolhaas design. Yes, I think this is a great use of public space. But this building is really cool, because once I was walking around Seattle and I had to poop. Their bathrooms are open to the public, and pretty clean.
Do you have any other suggestions for world's coolest buildings? My heart goes out to North Dakota, who no longer have any items of note in their... more

The world's tallest building (or most elaborate Photoshop hoax) opened today: the Burj Dubai (now the Burj Khalifa). It's height was kept a secret - so it couldn't be outdone by any rival buildings in the last stretches of construction: It's 2716 feet high. Woahdang. Here's a picture.

In addition to being tall, it's also an incredibly potent symbol of how ridiculous Dubai's economic run was in the aughts. Last month the city's economy was bailed out by next-door emirate Abu Dhabi for a cool $10 billion. The tallest, most eye-catching building in the emirate now bears the name of its neighbor's leader: The Burj Khalifa. In this picture, they appear to be blowing the whole thing up.

Okay, just fireworks. A reporter from the Wall Street Journal visited the building today and took my favorite picture: the long, spindly shadow of the Burj.
