Yeah yeah, we know the Olympics are coming. But rather than hanging around waiting for a month of traffic jams, East End bars charging a tenner for a pint and British inability to win a medal in any sport that doesn’t involve sitting down, why not try a few of London’s less traditional sports.
Rollerderby
Ah rollergirls how do we love you? Let me count the ways. We love you for your fabulous noms du skate – Rose Hypnol or Belle deBrawl for example - your bone-crunching, high-octane take on traditional roller derbies, and for the fact, unlike in the Premier League, going out drinking with the audience after a bout is positively encouraged.

London Bike Polo
Remember at school when you played football the participants were simply whoever was on the field at the time? Well London Bike Polo was like that. Starting out on a basketball court in Brick Lane, LBP was simple; turn up on a Sunday, bring a bike, and start bashing a ball around. It’s a little more organised nowadays but it’s still as relaxed a sporting experience as you can have in London.

Frisbee Golf
I have a sneaking suspicion that Frisbee golf was invented simply because its creator liked the word frolf and just wanted to have more opportunities of saying it. Whatever the origins, Croydon’s Lloyd Park is home to London’s only basketed frolf course. Steer clear of the league matches (man those guys take it seriously) and you’ve got the best excuse for heading to Croydon since Ian Wright was still at Crystal Palace.

Climbing
There’s an obvious disadvantage to outdoor climbing. You go through all of that effort just to find yourself in one of the least hospitable places on earth – up a mountain. Much better to keep in indoors, in a bloody great castle in North London, with a nice cuppa in the café, rather than frostbite, as your final reward.

Trapeze
It’s not the most useful skill obviously. It almost never comes up in job interviews and it’s a rare emergency that has someone crying out, 'This man is dying – get me a trapeze artist'. But still the idea that while your neighbours in Hoxton Square are supping watered-down mojitos and trying to pull that Ukrainian waitress, you could be next door, soaring through the air with the greatest of ease, is pretty sweet. Hoxton Square’s Circus Space has courses in juggling and tightrope-walking too but for us it’s trapeze every time.

Time to get off the couch and shed that unnecessary poundage.
