IBMs announcement of the first working cognitive computing chips covered nicely by Dean Takahashi at Venturebeat is one of those potentially disruptive technologies, but don’t expect the next iPad to be powered by one. While nanotechnologies have given us the tools to at least partially understand how nature works, replicating it is a different matter. It is a very different architecture, and one where connections are far more important than raw speed. But every advance in materials science, nanotechnology, and neuroscience takes us a step closer to developing something that allows us to get off the treadmill of Moore’s Law. http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/your-details/42997-ibms-cognitive-computing-chipsIBMs announcement of the first working cognitive computing chips covered nicely by... more

Just make sure not to do something that might make Facebook angry. Otherwise it might nuke every link to your site, choking off this river of traffic that you’ve worked so hard to build. That’s the message Facebook sent today with its censorship of links to Lamebook, a humor site that posts lewd conversations spotted on the social network. Facebook has confirmed that it is automatically blocking all links to Lamebook and that it has also removed the company’s ‘Fan’ page. Not because the content was offensive, mind you, but because Facebook doesn’t like Lamebook. http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/free-stuff/13871-make-facebook-angryJust make sure not to do something that might make Facebook angry. In common usage the word “anarchy” is a synonym for chaos and anomie, just as in common usage “anarchist” is a synonym for terrorist or nihilist. It places an immediate communications burden on anyone who believes, as I do, that a stateless society can be not only as well-ordered and agreeable as any society which attempts by a constitution to limit the powers of government for the purpose of ensuring common individual rights, but in theory could do a better job of preventing a reemergence of tyranny. http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/recent-news/427-mere-anarchyIn common usage the word “anarchy” is a synonym for chaos and anomie, just... more

One of the key aspects of the emerging Internet of Things - where real-world objects are connected to the Internet - is the massive amount of new data on the Web that will result. As more and more "things" in the world are connected to the Internet, it follows that more data will be uploaded to and downloaded from the cloud. http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/free-stuff/389-data-explosion-One of the key aspects of the emerging Internet of Things - where real-world objects... more

If someone goes from his car to his front door in a rainstorm, will he get more wet, less wet, or equally wet if he runs (rather than walks)? This is a very commonly asked question. To develop a quantitative answer, let's first consider a spherical man, and assume he moves to his car in a straight horizontal path with velocity u... http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/bizzareweird/349-running-in-the-rainIf someone goes from his car to his front door in a rainstorm, will he get more wet,... more

... Google and other search engines have to work very hard to create very intelligent robots to scan the web for sites. Until recently, these robots considered each and every page as a separate entity. Now, however, a change is occurring. Google is attempting to group pages together into sites, and then judge all of the pages as a group. The implication of this is apparently sites which are "tightly themed" will be positioned higher in the results pages than those that are not.... http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/free-stuff/315-are-the-search-engines-censoring-the-internet... NEPTUNE may have polished off a super-Earth that once roamed the outer solar system and stolen its moon to boot. The brutal deed could explain mysterious heat radiating from the icy planet and the odd orbit of its moon Triton. Neptune's own existence was a puzzle until recently. The dusty cloud that gave birth to the planets probably thinned out further from the sun. With building material so scarce, it is hard to understand how Uranus and Neptune, the two outermost planets, managed to get so big. http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/submit-an-article/291-neptune-may-have-eaten-a-planet-and-stolen-its-moon-NEPTUNE may have polished off a super-Earth that once roamed the outer solar system... more

It might seem bizarre that science is using art to learn about the mind—looking for hard facts in the most ethereal of places. But great artists turn out to be the world's first neuroscientists. Consider the flightless fluffs of brown otherwise known as herring gull chicks. Since they're entirely dependent on their mothers for food, they're born with a powerful instinct. Whenever they see a bird beak, they frantically peck at it, begging for their favorite food: a regurgitated meal. http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/section-blog/290-unlocking-the-mysteries-of-the-artistic-mind-It might seem bizarre that science is using art to learn about the mind—looking... more
