Grammy-winning rapper T.I. celebrated his return from prison by throwing a star-studded party in Los Angeles, California this week. T.I. took the time to pay homage to incarcerated rapper Lil Wayne.
T.I.'s welcome-home party was nothing short of epic - the infamous rapper was feted by the likes of Jamie Foxx, Usher and Diddy at L.A. hot spot Guys and Dolls on Sunday night, and the evening turned into a toast to the singer's future. Others on hand to welcome T.I. back on the scene included Lil' Kim, rapper Rick Ross and Amber Rose, who arrived sans Kanye West and almost sans clothing - she wore nothing but a nude leotard. "I'm so happy to be with all of you tonight," he said. "And I cannot thank you enough for being here." Not just for T.I.: The rapper took some of the spotlight off himself when he asked the room to acknowledge another wayward star. "There are still people in the hip-hop community that need our support," he said. "So I ask everybody to please raise your glasses for Lil Wayne." (New York Daily News)
Wayne was sentenced to a year behind bars last month.
Lil Wayne has been sentenced to a year in jail after pleading guilty in a New York City gun case. The Grammy Award-winning rapper was taken away in handcuffs to start serving his term immediately after his sentencing. He'll serve his sentence in city jails, not a state prison. He could be released in about eight months with good behavior. (CBS News)
Since he was released this year, the rapper is expected to marry long-time girlfriend Tiny Cottle.
"There are wedding plans coming soon, sometime this year," she said in an interview. "Not too big 'cause I want it to be as private as possible. There've been a million rumors about us getting married. It's taking away from the day that we really do get married so I just want to kind of have that moment for myself. I don't really worry about what people say about what's taking so long. like, it ain't none of your business what's taking so long. If we happy, why are you so concerned? We living, we're happy, we're in love. I mean, it's no doubt in my mind that he doesn't love every piece of me and vice versa so we're just doing what's comfortable and what works for us. Tiny and T.I.: Not for the world. When we get ready to make a move, we will make it. We just can't do it for everybody." (VIBE)
He is also working on his solo album called King Uncaged.
T.I. is setting the bar high for his post-prison album, King Uncaged, comparing it to Tupac's 1996 classic All Eyez on Me, which was released months after 'Pac got out of prison. "This is the most significant return from incarceration that the game has had since then," T.I. says. "Just given the enormous success of that project, everyone's expecting the same results. I just want to meet the expectations, if not surpass them." (Rolling Stone)Grammy-winning rapper T.I. celebrated his return from prison by throwing a... more
DMX may be heading back to court yet again, but this time he’ll be sitting in the plaintiff’s chair for a change. The troubled rapper is suing a company he claims pocketed close to $1 million that he believes belongs to him.
According to New York’s Daily News, the Yonkers rapper filed the suit against Rick Kid Entertainment on Monday (April 26). X alleges the company took 100-percent of the funds he earned instead of the 10-percent cut they both agreed on.
“DMX has sold over 30 million albums worldwide and has had No. 1 singles and albums on the Billboard charts, which in turn have generated a great amount of revenue for the defendants, but has left [DMX] with nothing,” the suit reads.
Although he has been in business with Rich Kid Entertainment for over a decade, X says he just recently noticed that he was being ripped off.
As previously reported, X is currently behind bars for a probation violation. —Elan Mancini (XXL Mag)DMX may be heading back to court yet again, but this time he’ll be sitting in... more
Drake, has been busy headlining his Away From Home tour for nearly a month, and on Monday (April 26), the Toronto-bred MC made a notable stop at the University of Missouri in Kansas City.
Why, because the Young Money rapper revealed that he would be submitting the final copy of his highly-anticipated debut album Thank Me Later later that night. He claimed that the show would go down in history; not only because it was his first time in Kansas City, but because that would be the city where the final cut of his LP would be turned in.
As he continued to talk about TML, Drake informed the wailing fans that the first song they’ll hear when they pop in the album on June 15, will be “Fireworks.” Giving the crowd a preview of the track, he said he usually doesn’t perform anything more than the first verse and chorus, but in celebration of such an epic night, he continued to rap the next verse acapella. Grand Hustle's B.o.B. recently talked about getting his debut album, Adventures of Bobby Ray, ready for release.Despite a catalog of well-received underground records to his name, B.o.B. feels most confident with his upcoming retail release.
"Getting to this point and finally getting an album out -- I know I speak on behalf of all my fans -- it's been a very long wait and I feel like everybody's finally ready for it," he explained in an interview. "Even though I've had a lot of music in the past, I feel like now it's timing, because timing plays a huge role in the success of things -- especially me, and getting here really took a lot of online presence, a lot of performing. It took a lot of shows..."I think now people know what they should expect, and even still, playing the album for people they're still like, 'Wow, I didn't know it was going to be that.' I think the fans know to expect decent music. I don't think anybody's expectations will be low for it, but I feel like it will definitely have some surprising factors to it." (MTV)
A tracklisting for the rapper's solo project was recently released online.
"Don't Let Me Fall" "Nothin' On You" (featuring Bruno Mars) - 4:30 "Past My Shades" (featuring Lupe Fiasco) "Airplanes" (featuring Hayley Williams) "Bet I" (featuring T.I. and Playboy Tre) - 4:14 "Satellite" "Ghost in the Machine" "The Kids" (featuring Janelle Monae) "Magic" (featuring Rivers Cuomo) "Fame" "Lovelier Than You" "5th Dimension" (featuring T.I. & Ricco Barrino) "Airplanes (Part II)" (featuring Eminem and Hayley Williams) (Team Supreme Music)
Last month, Bobby Ray talked about his project's cover art.
"Basically, the concept of the album cover is, I'm gonna give enough but I'm gonna leave it open for interpretation," B.o.B. explained promising to not take away from consumers' imaginations. "Of course I incorporated the four elements, earth, wind, fire and water, and it's an adventure. So I'm basicallytraveling through these elements during my adventure but even though, the elements are dangerous in themselves, but I still use it to my advantage, going through these elements. [The album] is done, finished. I'm done, it's like my homework's done...Lupe [Fiasco] is on it, T.I. is on it, I got a lot of outside production on it." (The Hip Hop Chronicle)
B.o.B. discussed his solo project moving from a May to April release date earlier this year.
"'Fifth Dimension,' T.I. actually produced it, him and Lil C produced it from Grand Hustle so we got in the studio just playing around with some drums, loops and guitars and some asteroids and we made up 'Fifth Dimension,' and it's gonna, it's a banger," B.o.B. promised in an interview. "[My album,] it's definitely scheduled to come out April 27th, it was May 25th but [The Adventures of Bobby Ray] got pushed forward, which never happens, ever, I don't even recall that happening and if it does change, it'll only move forward again." Lil Wayne addresses his rumored romantic relationship with Young Money artist Shanell aka SNL in the upcoming issues of Ozone Magazine. In his interview, Wayne claims he has never had a sexual relationship with his artist.
"That's a rumor, sweetheart," he said. "No, it's never been a personal thing. As far as us being friends, yeah. That's my friend. Shanell is a great artist and that's it, period. She's a Young Money great artist. I heard a rumor that she was pregnant from me. How could that be? We've never had sex. How could she be pregnant from me? You've got to have sex to be pregnant. That's one of the things you have to do. I don't understand how people's brains work. You know? I'm a really big person. I'm a real superstar. I'm not afraid to tell you or nobody else, you know? I die every week [according to the rumors]. I'm in jail right now [according to the rumors]. No, [the questions] bothers you, because you have to actually think if it's true or not and come sit down and ask this dumb a** sh*t. I know you have to feel stupid, because it's like me sitting here and looking at your [brown] hair and asking you, 'Since you dyed your hair green, how do you feel?' Your hair obviously isn't green." (Lil Wayne HQ)
Shanell previously said pregnancy reports stemmed from past gossip.
"Basically it came from a corny rumor that escalated," Shanell said in an interview. "First I was dating him, then I was his girlfriend, then we were getting married, then we were settling down and now I'm pregnant. It's so foolish we've haven't paid it any attention...All the rest of the rumors were kinda funny except that one. When my mother called me like, 'Um?,' [I was] like, 'No! Are you serious?' I don't care about the rumors, but I just want people to know that I'm not pregnant. I've got an album coming out, I'm a dancer, I'm in shape and children are not anywhere in my future." (MTV)
Wayne, resorting to a UStream recording, denied the pregnancy reports earlier this year.
"Let me clear up this rumor, man. Shanell is not pregnant from me," Wayne explained via UStream. "Shanell isn't even pregnant! Period. Clear that up right now, man. Everybody talking about Shanell pregnant by -- No, she not even pregnant. Period." (UStream)
Aside from being a member of Young Money, Shanell helped Wayne pen his experimental rock album, Rebirth.
"On the Rebirth album, a few of the tracks I worked on were one, 'Prom Queen,'" Shanell revealed in an interview. "'I'm So Over You,' which is on the bonus edition. A song called 'Runnin'' and 'American Star.' I really really like 'Runnin'' and how that song came about, I actuallyw was, I'd just jumped in the booth and started singing and screaming and Wayne actually liked it and said, 'Let me put a verse on it.' It was gonna be something I was probably gonna keep myself but it works out kinda the way he put it together." The cover and story synopsis of Styles P's upcoming Invincible book have been revealed online.
The story will revolve around protagonist Jake Billings.
Jake Billiings is usually cool under pressure, but when two stick-up kids rob his record store, Jake opens fire on them, landing him in prison. After only five days in, he receives a menacing, anonymous letter telling him to watch his back, that his days are numbered. But before he can find out who's behind the threats, Jake is stabbed by Frank Butler, a grimy hustler with no known gang affiliations, and ends up in a coma. (57th Ave)
Geared for a June 1st release, Styles recently said his book would feature a climatic ending.
"I never really took the time out to give it a shot, it's just something I always wanted to do. I got a love for books and reading. Actually, what happened, I was getting on the plane and I forgot my book but I wanted to read so I decided to give it a shot, did a few pages, ended up messing with Random House. Action packed mystery very climactic ending, dramatic, basically that's it. Just sometimes you got to chase your dreams or they chase you." (Hip Hop Wired)
Last summer, the rapper said he was aiming for a fall 2009 book release.
"I also got a fiction book coming out," Styles confirmed in an interview. "A fiction novel called Mr. Invincible. That'll be in a couple months, so go support that. I'm getting my author up. I just wanted to make sure I'm comfortable and got a few things I could do that I enjoy doing. I'm a creative person and I like creating. So I just wanted another job where I could create and make some money and doing something that I like to do." D12's Bizarre recently spoke on working with Interscope Records new artist Yelawolf and explained how the Southern rapper symbolizes Alabama. Referencing their "To The Left" collaboration, Biz talked about coming into contact with Yela.
"Yelawolf, I had heard the song with him and Raekwon, and I heard the song with him and Juelz [Santana], so I liked his vibe," Bizarre explained in an interview. "One day he came by the studio in Atlanta and we ended up just hookin' up, and just doin' a song. What I love about Yelawolf is that no matter who he gets on a song with, he represents the redneck, country, backwoods of Alabama. [Laughs] He's just giving his point-of-view, on a lot of stuff that I didn't really know about the country lifestyle that he informed me on - and I kinda put him up on Detroit. That's what the song is all about, it's called 'To The Left.'" (Hip Hop DX)
Earlier this month, Yela talked about being signed to Interscope and the Eminem comparisons.
"I've probably been through every label in the past couple of years," laughs Yelawolf. "I don't think we missed any. But after SXSW, it just got really heated, you know? Prior to that we had taken a few meetings, but we decided to just hold out and go knock it out there, see where it took us...I think it's completely fair, especially now that I'm at Interscope [to be compared to Em.] There's only been one internationally successful white rapper, so it's human nature. Obviously I don't know him as a person yet, but based on his lyrics and the music that he's put out, there's definitely a common ground of troubles. I'm absolutely up for it. I would love to work with Em. I'm a fan, so I'm definitely going to pitch it. I gotta take advantage of where I'm at." (Billboard)
Hip-Hop personality Miss Info sparked the rumor mill with reports of his Interscope deal prior to it going through.
A big birdie tells me that Yelawolf has officially signed toInterscope Records. Again, buzz+climate created a bidding war, but it seems Jimmy Iovine was highly motivated. Congrats to the Alabaman! Now usually I just pretend to be interested in people, but I'm honestly intrigued by this fellow (and I enjoy his Zannel). (Miss Info TV)
The rapper has already displayed his emcee skills as of late with a few notable collaborations.
Hip-hop's still unsure how to solve a problem like Yelawolf. On Juelz Santana's "Mixin' Up the Medicine," he sang the pilfered-from-Dylan chorus. On Slim Thug's "I Run," he was saddled with interpreting A Flock of Seagulls. But being the go-to white guy to use when it's clever to do so is an empty fate. He deserves to be more than a curio. Incarcerated rapper Lil Wayne discussed his problems with last year's The Carter documentary and explained why he tried to ban its release. In the forthcoming issue of Ozone magazine, Weezy said he was supposed to have final approval rights.
"The fact that we didn't want it released was business; paperwork. I feel like, if I agreed to have that camera around me, then I can't tell that person what to edit when they go to the editing room, unless I am in the editing room and editing with them," he explains. "If I'm not then I shouldn't complain, but I was supposed to have a say-so because I had to approve it. And that was the whole [problem]. I didn't approve it and they still put it out...There were females on there with me and sh*t, you know? Why give them some shine when I've got baby mothers? I believe as an editor or whatever, as a person associated with me, if you want to become a real business partner with me I believe you should consider things like that. I shouldn't have to be the one to consider it." (Lil Wayne HQ)
Producer Quincy "QD3" Jones III previously spoke with SOHH about what fans could gather from his Wayne documentary.
"The documentary shows, in my opinion, Wayne at one of his most precious moments which was seven months before he dropped his platinum album, Tha Carter III and then about two to three months after" QD3 explained. "So we capture him very intimately at that time. And what I was referring to in regards to his catalog and comparing it to Tupac is his work ethic which is unbelievable and I don't know if his fans truly appreciate how dedicated he is to the recording process. I think when people see the film, it's going to raise their respect level for him even though people already hold him in a very high regard. I think when they see this film, it's gonna take it to a whole 'nother level." (SOHH)
Lil Wayne's previous request to stop the release of the QD3 Entertainment documentary was denied by a state court judge, who allowed the film's release last year.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael S. Mink denied Wayne's request for a preliminary injunction this week. QD3 executive Quincy Jones III said the ruling frees his company to seek distribution of the film. "We're very pleased with the court's decision," Jones said. "We made a great film, which was incredibly well received at Sundance, and showcases Lil Wayne's extraordinary talent." (Variety)
Despite Wayne's complaints, the documentary's popularity was shown on the iTunes' Top 10 movie release list last November.
A controversial new documentary about superstar rapper Lil Wayne has shot to the top of the iTunes movie charts. QD3 Entertainment's film The Carter is currently the No. 1 selling documentary on iTunes in the U.S. In addition to landing the top slot on Apple's iTunes U.S.' music store, The Carter is also in the Top 10 on the Canadian iTunes music store. Late rapper Tupac Shakur's mother, Afeni, was arrested earlier this month on a drug possession charge after being busted by North Carolina police. According to reports, Afeni was arrested on April 16.
The mother of late rapper Tupac Shakur was arrested earlier this month by state alcohol agents. Afeni Shakur Davis, 63, of the 2900 block of Crystal Lane in Lumberton, was charged April 16 with felony possession of marijuana, maintaining a vehicle, dwelling or place for a controlled substance and simple possession of a controlled substance. (Fay Observer)
Afeni later posted a jail bond to avoid spending time behind bars.
She is out of jail on a $10,000 bond, and her court date is scheduled for May 10. Shakur is a Lumberton native who is best known for her work as a political activist and former Black Panther. She also is the mother of rapper Tupac, who was gunned down in Las Vegas in 1996. His murder remains unsolved. Since her son's death, Afeni has managed Tupac's unreleased music and poetry, selling millions of albums since his death. (ABC News)
Last year, Ms. Shakur was involved in a legal suit based on an alleged pre-planned Tupac biopic.
According to the complaint, a written contract was in place for life rights, with Morgan Creek claiming that Amaru is "refus(ing) to honor and perform a contract of a production of the film based on the life of Tupac Shakur." The company seeks damages and other relief. But late Wednesday (February 18), Amaru's lawyers denied the existence of adeal. (Billboard)
She later responded to the accusations and $10 million cross-complaint lawsuit.
Amaru Entertainment claims that Morgan Creek, CEO James Robinson and others tried to strong-arm a deal for Tupac movie rights, then sabotaged the project when Amaru attempted to set it up elsewhere. "Instead of negotiating in good faith with [Amaru], they sought to obtain the rights by concocting a nonexistent 'agreement' and engaging in heavy-handed threats, coercion and intimidation to interfere with and ultimately destroy the film project," Amaru claims. Amaru is seeking a court declaration that there never was a deal. (Reuters)Late rapper Tupac Shakur's mother, Afeni, was arrested earlier this month on a... more
