Just when you think the award show stage is safe again, another brewhaha bubbles up.
The Oscar winning Best Short Documentary, "Music by Prudence," was produced by Elinor Burke and directed by Roger Ross Williams. Those two had bad blood for over a year, arguing over the project's creative control. Ms. Burkett claims she gave Mr. Williams the idea for the project, while he disagreed and the matter was settled out of court.
You might say that since the project won an Oscar, the film's creative direction was successfully exercised, but nonetheless they reportedly did not discuss who would come onstage to accept the award. As only one person is allowed to speak when accepting the award, both Mr. Williams and Ms. Burkett made a b-line for the stage. Mr. Williams' 87 year old mother might have tried to block Ms. Burkett with her cane, or maybe it was accidental. The bottom line is it didn't slow down Ms. Burkett sufficiently and she ascended the stage and took control of the mic by talking over the director in a somewhat nonsensical acceptance speech.
