“The Snowman” is a magical, classic animated short film directed by Dianne Jackson, based on the best-selling children’s story by Raymond Briggs. The film premiered on the United Kingdom’s BBC Channel 4 on Christmas Eve 1982, and has aired every year since then. “The Snowman” won the 1983 BAFTA TV Award for Best Children’s Program and was nominated for a 1983 Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film.
“The Snowman” tells the wordless story of a young boy whose snowman comes to life on Christmas Eve and takes him on a series of adventures, only to melt into nothingness by dawn of the next day. It is a beloved holiday tradition; for many children of the 1970s and 1980s it was the first program they ever saw that addressed the issues of death and loss.
A sequel to the classic “The Snowman,” titled “The Snowman and the Snowdog,” is scheduled to air this Monday on BBC’s Channel 4, more than 30 years after the original film’s premiere.
This piece includes colorful illustrations, the acclaimed animated short and a trailer for its upcoming sequel, “The Snowman and the Snowdog.”

Just in case you haven’t had enough Easter joy yet, Toronto's Crush has produced a very humorous stop-motion animated short film, “Legend of the Golden Egg Warrior,” as an offering of good will over the Easter period. The film introduces us to a ninja nunchucking Easter bunny well schooled in the martial arts. Eggscellent!
This piece includes pictures and the funny one-minute retro chop-suey flick.

Public Television’s StoryCorps oral history project is premiering “The StoryCorps 9/11 Series,” three new animated films commemorating the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. The three-minute animated short films by the Rausch Brothers animators were created to preserve the memories of those who lost loved ones that tragic day. While the films are presented in a vintage cartoon-style, they carry deeply emotional heft due to the tragedy inherent in their stories. They are simple works, befitting the everyday lives that were nonetheless changed forever nearly 10 years ago. A major reason that 9/11 is such a tragedy is that it happened to people not unlike you or me, and these films do an amazing job of crystallizing that central truth.
This piece includes a number of colorful illustrations, as well as the three animated short films, “John and Joe,” “Always a Family” and “She Was the One.

“Jean-François” is a starkly beautiful and surprisingly moving five-minute animated short film directed by French animators Bruno Mangyoku and Tom Haugomat, which was awarded the “Jean Luc Xiberras de la Première Oeuvre Award” at Annecy 2010. The film is about a lonely championship swimmer who is trapped by haunting memories of his childhood experiences, and whose stellar present-day athletic achievements only serve to evoke painfully sad memories of childhood failure.
This piece includes colorful pictures, as well as the beautiful, bittersweet animated short film.

“Tribute to René” is a two-minute animated short art film, a collaborative creation by Box of Toys Audio with flipEvil design studio. The composition is a tribute to the Belgian surrealist artist, René Magritte, which is a bespoke piano piece in and around the dream-like state of the visuals.
Magritte became well known for his paintings that challenged observers’ perceptions of reality and forced viewers to become more sensitive to their surroundings. His works constantly play with reality and illusion, displaying a juxtaposition of ordinary objects in an unusual context and giving new meanings to familiar things.
This piece includes colorful pictures, a photo-gallery and the short film.

“Tatooine” is a wonderful remake of the Star Wars Trilogy, a two-minute paper-toon created by Jeremy Messersmith and Eric Power. Messersmith sings the tune, and Power did the adorable paper-animation. Messersmith’s song light-speeds through the first Star Wars Trilogy with its interstellar heart at one with the Force, mashing more than six hours of sci-fi legend into two-minutes of poignant animation. Be sure to watch it now, before George Lucas slaps them with a cease and desist order!
This piece includes colorful illustrations, as well as the sweet animated short.

“Classroom (3D Camera Flythrough)” is a spectacular 3D computer generated flythrough animation by Israel’s Studio Aiko. This amazing 3D classroom rendering is not a video of an actual classroom. “Classroom” by Studio Aiko is an example of attention to detail and long hours of getting it right. You can watch the video over and over just to see where or if they messed up. Maybe a graphic element will be reversed or an object won’t be quite in line with its physical properties, but you probably won’t find anything. With our current ability to produce ultra-realistic CGI, at what point will we go so far that we can no longer distinguish our realities?
This piece presents a number of high-resolution color photographs, as well as the 3D-CGI animated short, “Classroom (3D Camera Flythrough).” In addition, it includes another dazzling 3D animated short from Studio Aiko, “Hot Movies Prom."

“Animals” is a wickedly comical animated short film by Kristofer Ström, created for Minilogue’s music video, “Animals.” Minilogue’s music is self-described as Swedish Post-House/Techno, leaving behind the boundaries of those genres, and actually all previous musical genres. The magical little creature-animals serve as the musical front for the band, or rather as its visual front of imaginary, enchanting creatures. And a very strange and goofy ensemble of cavorting little creatures they are!
This piece includes a number of colorful illustrations, as well as two enchantingly zany animated shorts.

“Lights Out” is a very wacky one-minute CG animated short created by Irish filmmaker Cormac Kelly. The film follows the travails of a poor little robotic guy who’s trying to grab some shut-eye, but the factory around him suddenly springs to life. A serious design flaw in the factory’s ergonomics prevents the poor guy from reaching the off-switch, and the rest is history!
This piece presents colorful illustrations, the original incarnation of the animation from Dublin’s Piranhabar and a fantastic re-shoot of the animation that includes stereo sound effects.

“Marvelous Keen Loony Bin” is a 5-min. animated short film, a runaway hit produced by Rhode Island School of Design student, Lizzi Akana.
